Special dedication to O'Brien and his timeout infatuation

I'm just consistently amazed at how bad a coach can be at time out management. I have no experience coaching or playing football besides on the schoolyard. I can guarantee I would be an improvement in time out and time management. It's a special level of suck to be this bad every week.

Yup. Timeout management the last 2 weeks has been stupid. I suppose I shouldn't post a thread like this though. It's just business as usual on kirby.

Today was amateur hour. What a f'ing joke.

When it was brought up last game some said it didn’t matter since it didn’t cost the team anything, but this has been a trend since OB has been here.
Well, yeah, fortunately last week, it didn't end up biting them in the ass. Still doesn't mean it wasn't a stupid AF sequence.

Like everyone else, I'm screaming at the TV for the TO today. It doesn't come, they snap the ball with 12 seconds on the play clock. That's 28 seconds that just ticked away for no f'ing reason at all, other than OB is the dumbest f**cker ever when it comes to that stuff.

For whatever reason people complain about it and then forget. But once every 3-5 games it comes back. Maybe it doesn't always result in a loss like we escaped today. But there is no margin for error against top tier teams.

O'Brien is good for 2-3 losses every year by himself and I have no time left for him.

Some kid with Madden experience would be better.

Hook up one of those Xbox microphones to O'Briens headset and outsource timeout management.

I really like the sarcasm of the song as it relates to ob's clock management. In no uncertain terms - ***** OB.

I'll bump this thread all season everytime he does something stupid on the clock. I have a feeling that'll be damn near every week.

Why isn't Watson calling timeouts? Or Hopkins?

It was Ted Ginn Jr who called the timeout last week to set up the field goal.
Bob wants full control of everything. Remember that time during Watson’s rookie year near the goal line. He changed the play and scored a TD. He was micd up and when he went to the sideline OB said don’t do that. I called that play for a reason. Guy has a ridiculous ego and lacks the ability to actually coach. He’s terrible.

Maybe because Sean Payton has his team ready for those situations? OB made it clear that it’s not his job but it was Lechler’s. I guess they didn’t assign it to someone else when he left.

The only reason he isnt crucified for this nationally is Fornette was a half yard short.

Ob needs to send him a box of chocolates.
I couldn't go to the game. TV announcers kept calling him Four-NAY. Ignorance is not dead.

I find this a strange thread. == When the Jags scored their last TD, the Texans were disorganized. If the Jags had hurried and ran the two-point play before the time out by BOB, they would have won. The time out saved the game in my humble opinion.

We were talking about the lack of time out usage to close out the first half. Nobody is ridiculing OB for that last time out used on the 2 point conversion.

You know, I don't even fault O'Brien anymore, to be honest. Throughout his career as HC of the Texans, he has successfully identified the problem after every loss (and many of the wins). He has flat out told us he needs to coach better. I give the man credit. He is really good at identifying that one particular problem. He sucks at fixing it, but he's told us what the problem is.

If O'Brien is trying to emulate Bill Belichick, he needs to get his own Ernie Adams to tell him about situational football from the perspective of the press box.

"Belichick got his next head coaching opportunity with the Patriots in 2000. This time, Adams joined the team not as a coach, but as "Football Research Director." Adams fills a variety of roles for the team. On gamedays, he assists the coaching staff from the press box, advising Belichick on which plays to issue a replay challenge."

Now Belichick doesn't need an assistant to tell him when to call a timeout, but O'Brien obviously does. This is an ongoing issue.

But what about when it does matter? I mean this isn’t some random thing that should just be ignored. This is the guy in charge and will be when important games are on the line and he just doesn’t get it. His EGO won’t allow him to.

Completely agree. There is no shame in admitting that you need help with in-game management. The shame is in OB deluding himself that everything is okay and his decisions are justified.

At this point, I dont think OB's game management issues are because he has too much on his plate. It seems that he just has a lack of situational awareness. Even DW4 sometimes lacks awareness...especially when he is late getting the team to the line after a big play in a 2-minute situation. A time-out should have been called, but in absence of that, they at least should have hustled to the line. For now, I blame DW4's situational awareness on coaching.

O'Brian's explanation of the end of the first half:

"We got all the plays run we wanted to run."
"We got 'em run probably a little bit slower than we wanted them to run."
"But we got the ball down to the 2 yard line with a chance to score a touchdown."
"We felt like we got a good drive there."

Later he said this:

"There's a lot that goes into game management."
"More than anybody would ever understand."
"Unless you are in football."

I'm sorry but he almost sounds delusional. Why not just admit that he should have called a d*** timeout.

He's basically saying it's too much for him to understand

I think his ego got in the way and he was trying to score a “walk off” TD right before the half with no time left for the jags to do anything just to show everybody “you see, how about that!”

OB your offense stinks and your game management sucks. Get over yourself and get some damn help

What good would that do? Would it just make you feel better?

Billie Vanillie is the perfect name for him.

There must a black market or a prop bet for T.O. remaining.

I thought the argument (the general agreement) was that he spent his timeout's too extravagantly

It's both. When he does use them it's why the hell would you call a TO there. He always burns one when there's a decision that has to be made whether to go for it or not. Seems they never have a play ready and by the time they settle on one, make the decision to go for it, they run out of time, TO. They never hurry to the line and just run the play.

There's using 2 at the same time like week 1. And of course, the many times does he take those TO to the locker room with him when they should have been used. It's like much of everything else he does with this game to game game planning he does that never seems to have situational football things in those plans. That's why we see no sense of urgency in their 2 minute drills, or starting those 2 minute drills with a run.

The failure is that we're likely to miss in an extreme in both directions ... burning 2 timeouts at a time with an ignorant replay, and sitting on 3 timeouts with 36 seconds left in the half. If we could get time management wrong in a consistent manner that would be an upgrade.

I'm not defending BOB because of yrs of bad clock mgmt, but in these cases

1. He's got a young QB and wants to make sure everybody is on the same page.
2. I know it was a screw up, but I can see the 2 TO's being used there.
3. The TO usage just before the half was atrocious and I'm still baffled by how BOB ran out of time and still had no TO's
4. Most HC's screw up time mgmt. Andy Reid, who some consider to be a god around these parts is one of the worst in the NFL at clock mgmt. Heck, remember Kubiak taking a TO in Indy right before the 2:00 warning which allowed the Colts time to challenge a play and the play got overturned? Then the Colts scored a TD a play or 2 later. Point is these things happen not just in Houston.

What I dont understand is why they dont hire a MIT guy to be in the booth to make calls on TO's/Challenges. They spend millions on things far less important than these things and could probably pay a guy 100,00 grand to help make these kinds of decisions.

He doesn’t use his timeouts before the half but decides to use them all before 4min left in the 4th quarter. I’m watching Reid using 1 timeout left with a min left and he’s calling plays to conserve it. Frustrating.
