Lions | Assistant Coach Tossing Bricks - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 31 May 2005 19:20:59 -0700

Curt Sylvester, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions wide receivers coach Fred Graves plans to throw bricks to his wide receiver crew at least once a week. It is all part of his plan to help his young wide receivers focus and improve their pass-catching skills. "It's all about focus," said Graves. "If I balled up a piece of paper or if I take a tennis ball or even a football, and I toss it to you, in your mind you say, `Oh, I dropped it.' Then you've got to correct that. "But if I toss you a brick, I don't have to say anything because in your mind this thing is going to hurt. So you always get hands and eyes coordinated together and, basically, that's the drill." WR Roy Williams said the players have one choice – catch the brick or have it hit them. "It helps your concentration and focus," Williams said. "You're not going to let the brick hit you in the stomach so you're going to catch it away from your body. It translates to the football."

Interesting tactic. Wonder if an oval shaped spehrical object used during the regular season will throw them off as there will be no corners on the object to wrap the fingers around?

I guarantee that all it's gonna take is one of their receivers getting hurt by a brick, and then this guy is gonna be asked "What were you thinking???"

:brickwall

Hey, if it works for Jerry Rice, it's bound to work for everyone else..... despite the fact that Jerry was never in the position of getting a face full of brick....

It has to be one of the stupidest ideas I have ever heard. When one of their WRs breaks a finger, nose or loses an eye the lions are going to laughing stock of entire sports world.

As soon as I read the first post, I was thinking "Keep Chopping". You would think this person would find a better way to develop good hands. Like AJ catching footballs at close distance from a machine.

I got more ideas for other parts of the team:
QB: start throwing shotput balls to increase strength, but throw in football throwing motion as hard as they can.
RB: instead of running through the the gate with all the pads, take the pads off and replace with rebar.
OL: to simulate DL pass rush, have coaches drive golf carts and see if the O-line can stop them.
DL, LB, and CB: have them tackle the same golf carts.
K: make cement versions of the football, and have them kick 50yd punts and field goals with them.
The whole purpose behind these crazy ideas, strength and conditioning. What doesn't kill them only makes them stronger.

lmao, i can see it now dom driving into our O-line and palmer driving into our defense in golf carts hahaha......brings back memories of billy madison....dunno y maybe the penguin?

Sorry, but if my WR crew included Charles Rodgers, Roy Williams, and Mike Williams, I don't think I'd be throwing bricks at them. Maybe this is why they inexplicably took another top wideout in this year's draft! They figured they'd bust some pinkies along the way...
