I was looking at the past 5 years of the draft, and which players have come out playing very well. Here are my top 5 drafts top 5 players.

Very interesting, 4 out of the 25 top 5 picks were not in the 1st round, and of those only one was after the 2nd round. Shows that all the scouts are good at ranking talent, for the best players are taken early.

Just for fun, here are my top 5 from the past 5 years

1. Ed Reed
2. Shawn Merriman
3. Larry Johnson
4. Carson Palmer
5. Demeco Ryans

Whats funny, is that the 4 that were available, texans passed on 3 of them.

All italisized are players the Texans passed on

DeMeco was in the 2nd round, Ware was drafted 11th and Merriman was drafted 12th, the Texans originally had the 13th pick.

2006
1. Demeco Ryans 1st Round
2. Vince Young 1st Round
3. Marques Colston 7th Round
4. Reggie Bush 1st Round
5. Devin Hester 2nd Round

Interesting the only Pro Bowl rookie and you left him off, Marcus McNeil, SD.

We get it, the Texan and many other team have not taken the guy who turned out to be the best player at each pick. Remember certain guys who play well on one team will fail on another due to system, player around them and coaching.

Well lets look at this:

Peppers: In retro spect, you're correct. Picking Peppers was the most logical pick after five years of reviewing what they have accomplished. However, at the time, we didn't know that Capers and Casserly would sacrifise the clubs future by gambling on guys the next three consecutive drafts. Every o-lineman they brought in was just about a bust. Every year , they tried to douce the fires by thrwoing more gasoline onto it by reaching over and over again on o-line prospects. In hindsight they should have taken Peppers and eaten a 1-15 season to set up the '03 draft. They hit on DD and....

Palmer went #1 overall in '03.

I don't think that you can argue that A.J. hasn't lived up tp his potential. L.J., Suggs, & Palimalu were off off the baord in the first. Unless you our advocating that the Texan's should have moved down passed up Andre Johnson to take one of them....what is your point here ?

2004.

The great Babin reach. Again at this point, Capers and Casserly are desperate to turn the defense around. They know they are on a short leash. Hence, the great Babin reach. Tommy Harris, one of Vinny's favorite that year, did not fit the 3-4. Robinson can now be argued is not a top flight cover corner. But at the time no one was argueing that he was. He was a good corner who tackled well. It might be the fact that this club runs an extra SS instead of a true free saftey that has hurt Robinson's production. May be the fact that this club has not generated a pass rush in three seasons because of lack of tallent. However you cannot argue that at the time DR was more than a fair corner whos sure tackeling made him a lock as a front line NFL corner.

Infamuos 2005. Again, there is not enough evidence in yet that the two we passed on are truly NFL elite players. You may wish to project that on them...I'll pass. It was a fine highlight that Reggie Bush posted yesterday. Unfortunately, The Saints need two more from him and didn't get it. I've posted on VY many times.

Easy to cherry pick the draft five years in hindsight. Want to wow me...throw up your mock this year. Pick the four guys who are out there who will be locks that we should trade down for ? That ...would impress the heck out of me.

Honeslty, there is no way that D-Rob should be rated higher than Vilma or Rivers. He has regressed every year.

You forgot Pac-Man, he'd probably be the 2nd best player in the 2005 draft.

If you want to argue that, let me know. I have plenty to back it up.

I agree.

When he's not in prison he is a helluva football player.

How many interceptions did he have in his first year? Crickets... The facts are that Jones has faced criminal charges three times since joining the team almost as many interceptions (4) in a two year career. Plus he is taking anger management counseling and faces a Feb. 1 hearing in Nashville on a misdemeanor charge of assault filed by a woman who said he spit on her at a nightclub in October. Model citizen! He didn't have an interception until the 7th game this year. 2nd best player in the draft ha ha.

Oh sorry, I wasn't trying to make a point on that the Texans drafts have completely sucked, I am just showing all the greatest talent really comes from the first round, and I was showing how some draft classes have been a lot stronger than others. And yeah I was looking for Marcus McNeil...for some reason I didn't find him and I was thinking he was a rookie last year...he definately should be in there.

Talent wise Pac-Man is up there...

Agreed. If that was your point I agree. The art of the draft is choosing your poison. All Day may be the next Jim Brown. But is the risk of his lack of production because of injuries enough to pass on him and take someone else ? Do you move down and take Laron where he should go instead of where a lot of locals project him to go. Was Laron's lack of production a function of the scheme of the defense. Or, was he a guy playing shy to not to hurt his draft stock ? All of these things are subjective. As are the opinion of who is the biggest need of this football team, and the most value at the eight. So it's up to Kubiack, Rick Smith and the scouts to sort that out. If they move down tring to purge the team of previous mistakes I'll be on board. They take All Day or Laron, ignor the lines again, I'll be on board.

San Deigo took McNeil at 50 in round two. So who would you rather have had ? McNeil or Demmeco ? That was my only point. Last year I was against McNeil because I thought with the juniors who should of been on the board in this draft, we would have a chance at a fair prospect at the two this year. Several who should of came out didn't. So once again they have a choice this year on the o-line.

In the 2004 draft how can you leave off DeAngelo Hall the CB for the Falcons?? He is considered a true shut down corner and could very well become/has become another Champ Bailey!!!

You're either

A. Still upset about the 2 TDs Pac-man has returned on the Texans
B. Have no clue what you are talking about

I'm going to guess it's both

Frank Gore > Pac Man Jones

Shawne Merriman > Pac Man Jones

Definitely not the 2nd best player from the 2005 NFL Draft.

Including Michael Lewis in the 2002 draft over Westbrook, Lito Sheppard, and Roy Williams is not a good idea. Westbrook was a 3rd rounder, by the way.

DeAngelo Hall is not even close to a shutdown corner.

He can hardly cover at all.

He just has the wheels to make up for mistakes and the hands to make a pick.

If you're looking for a true shutdown corner look at Terrence Newman.
