Sleeper picks.

I would like for the Texans to get Taylor Mays in the 1st round of the draft. However, I could see him going before we pick and I could also see us going with a good DE or young corner if one is available. So I was thinking of what we could do in the later rounds to get a safety should Mays not be in the plans for us.

With this info:

I could see Emanuel Cook's status dropping in the draft and I certainly wouldn't be opposed to drafting this guy in the 2nd or 3rd round. This kid packs a wallop and can make plays in the secondary.

I'm also looking at possible RBs in the later rounds because I know guys like Knoshawn Moreno and Shon Greene are going to be gone and Kubiak will not draft a RB in the 1st round. Does anyone know anything about Donald Brown?
I know he goes 5'10 208 pounds, so he's light and maybe not the big mauler we are looking for but I haven't heard much about him and seems to me he could slip into the later part of the draft. He could put on some weight too. Even so he may be a good pick up for a guy that could fit our system well and spell Steve Slaton. I know we have Moats for that but I'm not too sure if that dude is staying either. I also like the Rashad Jennings kid.

Watching the Bowl game, Taylor Mays doesnt really do it for me. I liked their MLB, but I may freakin cry if they draft a guy to move Demeco two years late. Im a fan of Selvie from South Florida. I really dont see a CB that early at all. Reeves picked it up later in the year when we were more aggressive, same with Bennett. If Dunta stays, We have four we seem pretty high on.

What did Taylor Mays not do for you? He didn't make interceptions or fumble recoveries but he did make some hits that resulted in turnovers and if you remember, the other team could not throw downfield. His size and speed are ready for the NFL. I'm not arguing, I just want to know what specifically didn't do anything for you. Keep in mind he's also a Junior.

sleeper pick, as in little known? (scouts know everyone) sleeper pick, as they will out perform expectations (see Steve Slaton) or sleeper pick to play Safety for Texans should Taylor Mays be gone in the 1st? (if thats who you really want the Texans to draft).

Just a bad feeling. He is good, but really doesnt seem like a ball hawk to me. I wouldnt be spiting nails if we drafted him, but 15th pick on a Saftey that doesnt seem like a ball hawk kinda worries me. Also, not a huge knock, but he has so much talent around him, I kinda worry about him being the product of a system.

Courtney Greene, FS, Rutgers (6'2" 210, 3rd - 4th round)
Josh Pinkard, FS, USC (6'1" 215, UDFA)
Otis Wiley, SS, Michigan State (6'2" 210, 4th-5th round)
Darcel McBath, FS, Texas Tech (6'1" 200, 7th round)

Safety is loaded from top to bottom this year, which is why I would prefer not going safety in round 1. There's too much talent in the middle rounds that it may not be completely necessary.

Sleeper picks as in play safety for The Texans should Taylor Mays be gone in the first and who I really want the Texans to draft.

If we look at safety I would prefer one of these guys:

Chancellor - Virginia Tech, 2nd
Chung - Oregon, 2nd
Wiley - Michigan St, 4th

Those guys were all the best players on good defense and they could be had in areas that enable us to keep our top pick(s) to use on other areas.

I hear you on that. The one thing that makes me want to take him though is that he doesn't have to come in and start right away (I know I know, at #15 he better) but Ferguson did a good job and I am thinking we will have to go this route because I think DEs we need will be gone.

alright, no problem.

William Moore, FS Missouri 6-1 226 if slips to Texans 2nd rd. pick, because he has 1st rd. talent that could be considered a sleeper pick, cause 32 teams passed.

Patrick Chung, Oregon SS 5-11 210 will get drafted somewhere in the 2nd no sleeper value here.

Chip Vaughn, Wake Forrest SS 6-2 214 undervalued because of the studs he was surrounded with (Aaron Curry, OLB Alphonso Smith, CB) would grade him out to 3rd. round. I would actually buy, Curry in 1st, Smith in 2nd & Vaughn in 3rd. that would be sweet & you would hardly recognize the Texans defense next season.

Rashad Johnson, Alabama FS 6-0 190 smart cover centerfielder. not really a sleeper but could fall if Combine speed is less than expected 3/4th rd.

Trimane Goddard, North Carolina FS/SS 5-11 195 physcial for size, productive, plays like Marlon McCree former Texan safety, undervalued sleeper pick 4th/5th rd.

I just think we have SS covered. The team seems to really like Barber and Harrison. We need a ball hawk, and I dont think Mays is that guy. I also dont want a guy that projects as a hybrid DE/OLB. I just want a guy who has played DE in college and projects as a true bluee DE in the Pros.

RB Marlon Lucky (6'0" 211lbs), Nebraska, in the 4th

Safety Derek Pegues (6'0" 193lbs), Mississippi State, in the 4th or 5th

LB Darry Beckwith (6'1" 237lbs), LSU, in the 4th or 5th

A slew of WR like Jarett Dillard, Demetrius Byrd, Brian Robiskie, and Louis Murphy from the 3rd to the 5th

This is the reason that Mays doesn't come off as a "ball hawk": he played deep in USC's cover-1 scheme, meaning he was responsible for covering the entire field, and he did so admirably. His lack of interception shouldn't be a worry as the USC scheme didn't give him a ton of opportunities for such. His numbers will be much better in the NFL than they were in college.

I believe Pegues comes off the board in the 2nd or 3rd. He is a good athlete and on top of the ability to play both CB and FS, he has extra value as a very good punt returner.

I think 2nd round is going to be a little high for Pegues just because I don't think that after the big-name safeties are gone (Mays, Moore, Chung) that there will be any more safeties drafted until at least the 3rd round. He's a good player though. Not many people know about his abilities.
