I should have named this: "Just Plain Odd; Part 2".

A coaching staff that sports Super Bowl rings can certainly catch the attention of an NFL free agent for hire. Especially one that's also wearing a Super Bowl ring of his own.

And that's exactly what brought LB Jamie Sharper to Seattle.

"The main thing was the coaching staff, guys that have won championships before," says Sharper on signing with the Seahawks. "That's all a player wants. I've won one, but it's better to win two."

Sharper was part of a Baltimore Ravens team in 2000 that set records for points allowed (165) and rushing yards allowed (950) along the way to winning Super Bowl XXXV. He started 79 of 80 games at outside linebacker in his five seasons with the Ravens, averaging 104 tackles a season.

Selected by the Houston Texans in the 2002 expansion draft, Sharper led the Texans in tackles in his three seasons with the team, including an NFL-leading and career-high 195 in 2003. But at the same time the Texans weren't winning a whole lot of games.

"We were the cellar dwellers of the AFC," Sharper said. "We didn't even get a sniff of the playoffs or TV coverage, and I really wanted to get back to that."

Jamie is back to that big time this season with two Monday Night Football appearances and an ESPN Sunday night game. As to which position Seahawks fans will see him playing-middle or outside linebacker-it really doesn't matter to Sharper.

"I can fit anywhere, I'm a pretty diverse linebacker," says Sharper. "One thing I like to do is make hits, so as long as I'm hitting people and getting at the quarterback, I'm happy anywhere."

Getting back to that Super Bowl ring of his, Jamie says it sees the light of day only on special occasions.

"I wear it once a year, around Super Bowl time," he says. "I might bring it out with the Seahawks when we get to the playoffs, but I never brought it out in Houston because we were always losing."

Come this January, Seahawks players and fans can look for Sharper to bring on the bling.

Talking trash or being brutally honest, you be the judge...I hope we crush them on national TV this year...

I was just thinking the same thing. I want us to go show him how great the 'Cellar Dwellers of the AFC' really are. Is all he wants is to be on National TV? :brickwall

Well, we can take it two ways. It is true that we have been cellar dwellers. I mean, that's not an insult. It's just fact.

Bummer he didn't feel the need to show it as a Texan, but whatever.

The dude never did anything to get my ire, so I'm not going to trash talk him now just because he's being honest on another team.

Although, I do hope our Texans whip the snot out of him and the Seahawks.

I guessed once again fans were fooled into thinking a player was more of a stand-up guy.

I hope Seattle does a freefall to the cellar next season, it's obvious Sharper couldn't wait to get out and away from Houston.

this makes me not miss him anymore, i have lost all respect for this man. Thaught he was a good player with his eyes set on helping us win, all he wanted was to be in the spotlight. Loser. I also hope he know's he's not going to be winning any rings up in Seattle, and that we will embarass him on national tv. We needed a leader on defense, and he certainly didn't fit the bill. Hope he showed himself to the door, won't be missed.

BTW he looks ugly in a seahawk uni.

Whoa now! All he said was he didn't take the ring out in Houston. Every year you read about players doing that in the playoffs to spur their teammates on to get one of their own. Frankly, there was no reason to bring it out. If he did bring it out with our record, you'd could jump him for lording his hardware over the rest of the team.

He's done nothing but try to cast his landing in a new city in a positive light, in an attempt to gain acceptance with those fans. He could have done so by saying some outlandishly negative things about the Texans, but he did not. Yeah, we did finish last in our division our first two years, and we backed into 3rd this year with a terrible loss to the Browns where you darn well know our O-line just gave up, so cut the guy some slack. He's still (so far) the class guy we knew him to be when he was here.

:soapbox:

Those remarks by Sharper are so disappointing; I'm surprised he said things like that that are so self-serving and immature. I'm still gonna be interested to see how he performs up there, but now don't really care one way or the other if he or his team succeeds.

Okay, please tell me, which sentence was immature? Which one was self-serving?

Thanks

Now when we get a pic of Jay Foreman in a Raiders Uni the trilogy of the "Just Plain Odd" will be complete

I have mixed emotions about the comments...It certainly stings to hear ANYONE make statements about our team like that, but at the same time, they are true. We were at the bottom of the cellar his entire stay here, and we were always losing.

Did he have to say it like that? Did he mean the interpretation that many of us are feeling? Is there another way he could have said it without insulting us? I don't know, but it doesn't make it any better.

Before he came to us he was on a winning team and got his super bowl ring, then without his own approval, he was thrust onto a new team that everyone knew was going to struggle. He didn't ask to come here, he didn't ask to fight for us, but was obligated to by contract. He worked hard while he was here, but there was always a feeling I got that he didn't want to be here, and that he couldn't wait to get the heck out. I guess he got what he wanted. The more I think about it, the more it seems like Sharper wouldn't come to terms with the Texans, not the other way around.

One thing I do know is that I will be in Seattle, and I can't wait to see his head roll back, and his lower jaw pop right into his mouth piece as we run all over his butt. My chapter with Sharper is over; it's time to light him up! It’s just too bad he had to up him and his family all the way to rainy Seattle just to stay on a losing team!

Don't forget Kenny Wright in a Jags uni, and wherever Eric Brown ends up.

But the weirdest for me will be JJ Moses in a different uni.

I knew my name would be mentioned here.
I still like Jamie the player...and know that former players do talk smack to key up their new fans, and while I am taking one of my Sharper jerseys to Seattle to be personally signed....
He is going DOWN this season. I hope to see tracks all over him on the field at Qwest. Texans tracks. :highfive:

Hope he enjoys yet another losing season up in my old stomping grounds. :)

To me, Sharper sounds like a little kid who is kissing up to a new buddy by
way of trashing or belittling a former friendship that was basically severed
because of honest differences. Its like Sharper saying, the Texans weren't good enough for him "but you Seahawks are, 'cause we're both so cool." If you really felt that way Jamie, be an adult about it and keep it to yourself, you have (or perhaps did have), fans back in Houston who still want to follow you and want to pull for you to get back into the playoffs like you want, even if you're no longer with the Texans.

"We were the cellar dwellers of the AFC,"

"I might bring it out with the Seahawks when we get to the playoffs, but I never brought it out in Houston because we were always losing."

i dunno i find it [retty immature. you also notice he had nothin nive to say at all bout the texans, come on i mean even moss had nice stuff to say bout the vikings when he left......give me a break i THOUGHT jamie was a classy guy but hes proven to me now all he cares about is being number 1 and nothin else, i can tell you now hes lost a fan.

Im not gonna hold this against him. He is right, the whole time he played here we were the wipping boys of the AFC. Did he have to come out and say it like that? No, he could have been a little more classy. I still think he is a good linebacker, and will cheer for him in Seattle. I just hope we stomp the stuffing out of them this year! :ouch:

Right. Association by disassociation.
Personally, I think this is just in the natural order ofthings for a player to slight the town they recently left. It smooths things over with the new fans.

But now that the rose colored glasses have come off for Sharper, let's talk aout what's really important: The Freakish Shape of his Helmet.

I'm looking at the picture of him at the beginning of the thread and it still freaks me out.

It looks too round. Like an ovesized bowling ball hollowed out to make the helmet.

Any Lovecraft fans would unerstand if I used the stock descriptions of "Cyclopean" "Highly Singular" and "Preternatural" to describe that shielded dome of his.

Hold up yall! How dare yall come in here and bash the man for telling the truth? Texans didn't do good last season and that's the truth. I think yall took it the wrong way. I know the man off the field. So don't go there. Secondly, fans don't know what goes on behind close doors with the Texan organization so don't make any assumptions.

Sharper was one of those Texans who "didn't do good last season". He was one of the guys who was "always losing". I think Texan fans would prefer Sharper accept some of that responsibility in the same manner he accepted $11 million in his 3 seasons with the team. Or, he could just shut up.

Sharper made some comments last year that probably didn't sit too well with the front office. Forgive me for not having a link, but I remember him indirectly trashing Capers' leadership abilities to the media, which is pretty low considering he's a team leader and an established veteran.

Those remarks aren't a blatant shot at us, but it's a pretty nice jab. He makes it sound like we have no desire to ever win games, and we're content with coming in last.

Well said!! I especially like the "shut up" part!!

This is all the more reason I like the fact that we are getting younger where our players can grow as our team does. Guys like Jamie Sharper probably never even wanted to play with us to begin with because he was drafted by us in the expansion draft. Glenn, Payne, and Walker were exceptions but this just shows that Sharper never wanted to play for us.

You see a guy like Glenn who posted 5 Ints the previous season and we just up and make a trade for another CB and he never once has said anything bad about our organization. To me he has more right to say bad things about the team but he is a real professional.

That is why when I see a guy like Peek jumping up, hooping and hollering after a successful play, I am going to appreciate that more because it sure does seem like the guys that want to see this team succeed are the guys you see showing more emotion on the field.

Excellent point. Glenn is a professional and I hate to see a team leader like that go, but it is what it is and we're younger now. I'm anxious to see how Glenn does a full season after the surgery.

I hated to see him go but for the betterment of the team it was necessary. I am not sure what the crop of CB look like coming out in next years draft but all in all we would've probably had to draft one high and start over with the rookies on defense. Now we got a vet at that position that will give us some good years and there is no rookie learning curve.

We shall see how well Sharper does against the Rams.

Well, to be fair:

Our Texans are 14-34 in franchise history. Granted, expansion team, but cellar dweller does not offend me. It's the truth, and while painful, brighter days ahead.

And secondly, would we hold it against one of our new players if they dissed their previous team? Probably not.

Finally, I'd be more concerned about his comments if I was a Seahawks fan: ""I might bring it out with the Seahawks when we get to the playoffs..."

MIGHT?! MIGHT?!?! :D

Bye bye Jamie, you wore the jersey, but it appears you were never a Texan.
:BananaWav :neener:

I'm not offended by anything he said actually. He spoke the truth. The truth hurts. But I guess I look it like what former player doesn't talk trash about his past team? I mean most do. Loyalty means nothing in football.

yeah we'll see how much of a "losing team" we are come National Tv, when he is running after D.D who just shreded his defense for a 58 yard TD. Thats a pridection but its 50 plus yard prediction.

Screw Sharper. There are plenty of guys that have left teams that werent "contenders" .. and they did not feel the need to make comments like that.

Sharper is talking smack.. thats all there is to it.

I used to like the guy, but if he doesnt have the maturity to move on to another team without bashing the one he left.. then ive got no respect for him whatsoever.

and another thing.. after all these comments.. you KNOW that the Texans players are aware of them.

I look forward to the game against Seattle. Ill bet dollars to donuts that we come out fired up and totally own em.

Of course I don't like the loser part, but it is the truth. The Texans have lost more games than they have won. The statement itself shows that he was not the leader we thought he was though. He didn't have to take a direct swipe at us. In the world of football, you can never tell what can be that extra bit of insperation that will help give a lesser player a drive to try a little bit harder. I know they are pros and shouldn't take plays off, like Moss, but they are also human. May be the sight of his big, shiney, Super Bowl ring could have given some kid on the club an extra bit of umpf.

Im a fan of Jamie Sharper, just not as much of a fan as I used to be. Ive watch him since when he played with the Ravens. After those remarks he made, I cant wait to see Pitts or Weigart put him on rollerskates 10 yards down the field! :highfive:

I would not say it is so offensive, but the reality is the Texans were missing the OL in year one (see ESPN draft commercial). BTW the Texans didn't draft OL then.

The defense which solid in year one degraded in year 2 and never to be seen again.

By year three, the offense carried the team more than the defense. I am sure that Dom Capers did not want an offense-dominated team. Maybe its not in his blood. So he had to make some changes.

The statements in the article hurt some fans. As in life, sometimes the truth hurts. I just wich that Sharper would have shown the fans some gratitude. Because, they backed him 110% when he was here. Reliant was lined with #55's all around. You think he could have acknowledged that.

He's not a guy to pull any punches, he's just calling it like it was. Were we not losers? He's a loser for saying a fact? Hmmm, okay. It's just that now he does'nt have to turn all that losing into "stepping stones" "building blocks" or "expansionism", he is in Seattle now and can call it like it was. We heard it at the end of the season, he is plain tired of losing and maybe like a lot of fans around here agree with him. It's time to shine or revamp.

I wonder if Jamie realizes that the Seahawks haven't won a playoff game in 20 years? Methinks Jamie is about to find out that the term loser is relative.

I think Jamie is about to find out that the term loser is relative.

That reminds me of Hasselback's coin toss:

After winning the overtime coin toss in a 2003 playoff game against Green Bay, Hasselbeck said "We want the ball and we're gonna score." On the ensuing possession he threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown.

I don't see them getting a win in the playoffs this year either.

I guess he's saying that Seattle has had winning seasons for the last 2 years and the Texans havn't. Winners=Seattle Losers=Texans. We'd have to make it to the playoffs to lose one.
