Completely forgot about that. I don't know that it has the first thing to do with his current status though.

No I don't think it has anything to do with him not playing. Just saying that our track history of drafting anyone with even a hint of injury concerns has not been good. I can't remember the last time it worked out for us.

There are rookies playing yes but Strong is an outside guy competing against Washington and Hopkins, Worthy and Mumphery are playing as an extra WR on the inside.

What's going on with these draft picks?

It seems like every year we take someone that shows up out of shape, not ready to practice who gets dinged up a lot....

What's really going on?

May be OB's goofy way of "motivating" players.

Just like XSF, it was reported that he came to camp slim with extra muscle, but now he doesn't know how to practice....

I'm sorry, I am not buying it. The same excuses were trotted out for XSF and Nix. All 3 of them were out of shape and were behind the curve from the get-go. Fool me once..... The Texans deserve nothing but scathing criticism. The Texans are a delusional organization divorced from reality with no clue on how to build a winning team. The Texans are a huge embarrassment to the city of Houston. McNair should the sell the team to someone with the passion and intellect necessary to build a winner. We have a thin-skinned fool of an owner.
I've dealt with five 2 year olds with more maturity and patience.

Yea my thoughts too.

What is that conversation like to gauge someone's desire and health?

- Do you like to play football son?

- Yes sir I do. But actually i am really interested in...

- (Interrupting)Great! Hows your health?

- I feel fine but I have this chronic....

- (Interrupting) Draft him!

I dont know why but when I wrote this I heard it Yosemite Sam's voice.

I read it with a Foghorn Leghorn voice.

I can't ***** too much as I've been on board for most of the third round picks. I seem to be weak in judging those rounds and go by all the draft predictions. I hope Strong can get it together as I still think he is an asset. i said that about Nix also however his camp showed me he wasn't going to make it.

After reading this piece (worth reading in its entirety), may give a glimpse to why Strong is in BOB's dog house. He seems to be fitting right in there with our previous 3rd Rnd pick......starting to look too much like Nix's little brother.......

Then comes Bill O'Brien's Monday press conference after the loss to Carolina this past weekend, a loss in which the Texans' 2015 third round choice, wide receiver Jaelen Strong, was inactive and did not dress. (As a point of reference, fifth-round rookie WR Keith Mumphrey and undrafted rookie WR Chandler Worthy were both active for this game.)

This is the latest touchpoint in what's been an underwhelming tenure with the Texans thus far for Strong, who showed up at rookie minicamp out of shape (recurring third rounder theme!) at around 20 pounds over his playing weight, then celebrated on Twitter when he lost the weight over a matter of just a few weeks. (True story: When we interviewed Jaelen Strong on my radio show after the Texans drafted him, he was doing the interview from a Cheesecake Factory. Fact.) Once training camp began, his struggles to pick up the offense and focus on ball skills were well documented on Hard Knocks.

Strong suited up for the Texans' opener, but didn't see the field. Then, this past Sunday, he was inactive. When he was asked Monday about why Strong was inactive, O'Brien said, "He needs to practice better." When asked what Strong needs to do better at practice specifically, O'Brien short answered again, "Just improve like everybody else."

If there were a font that could capture O'Brien's disgust with Strong appropriately, I'd use it. It doesn't exist.

The Texans obviously loved Strong when they drafted him, as they moved up in the third round to nab him when he was still on the board (one pick after Tyler Lockett, who is making big plays for Seattle). Many thought they got a steal with the selection of Strong at the time. However, we've seen this movie before…if the trend with Strong holds true, as it did for Williams, Montgomery and Nix, the Texans 3rd Round Curse will swallow him whole as well.

The good news is that, if Strong does survive, he needs only seven catches to become the team's biggest third round success story the past three seasons. So yay.

Strong aiming to practice better

............O'Brien on Monday said Strong must practice better to get on the field. Strong said he dropped too many passes last week.

"I see improvement every day, but I put too many balls on the ground last week," Strong said. "I shouldn't have. It was probably the best decision not to dress me. He's the head coach. Everything he says goes. I know he's right. I've got to do better. I've got to improve and do anything I can to help the team.

Don't know what the problem is. He'll fit right in there with the rest of our receivers.:chef:

If you were a season ticketholder, after 13 yrs you may start to lose a little bit of patience too.

If I were a season ticket holder, and if I were that miserable, I'd a cut bait a long time ago. Nobody is holding guns to your heads. There's no excuse for the way you or he acts.

I've been a season ticket holder since 2006. In that time, we're 70-73. 70-75 counting this year. Winning seasons in three of the last four.

Makes me think it's code word for something. Don't know what, but something.

Thanks for taking the time to let me know what you would do and how I feel. Fact is I would've cut bait a long time ago, but my wife enjoys going to the games and if I can keep her interested in football (Even medicore football) it makes my sports watching life much easier. Especially since these games led here to join a FF league.

In short it's worth it. She is especially looking forward to going to Miami.

See, if I quit watching the team I hate then my wife will quit watching the team I hate and then I'll have to quit watching the team I hate ...

... wonkwonkwonk ...

I dont hate the Texans, I think they are poorly run from on on the field product stand point. I so feel like I'm wasting $$$$ if I was expecting them to become a consistent winner (Feared team) and that I care more about them winning than the Texans high up in org does. They dont do everything possible to put the best players on the field.

To each their own, I could really care less what others think of my opinions. I do my own thing and would hope that you're doing the same.

I hate my wife so I beat my wife, after I beat my wife I pity my wife, after I pity my wife I **** my wife, after I **** my wife I hate my wife.

The never ending circle of.....

It's a common repeating pattern of behavior established by the Texans front office. The pattern doesn't really change with different head coaches. The single common denominators for the Texans poor draft history is Bob McNair and Rick Smith. And Rick Smith is a Bob McNair decision.

AHA ... the Texans have geared their team to new fan women . They're non violent , low scoring like baseball so it will be consistent and not cause confusion and with JJ as it's ambassador . They have lots of dress up days like Deep Steel Blue day , Battle Red day , Liberty White day , Pink out , and Red Bandana day .

Not telling you what to do or how to feel, but I find it helps me if I don't minimize the success they do have. For instance, I'll say something like, "We've had a winning season three of the last four years." Which is in line with "them to become a consistent winner." Someone who would minimize that success would say, "Yeah, but they missed the play offs the last two."

Or if I say we won two play off games in the last four years, someone who would minimize that success would say, "But it was the Bengals." or "But we got embarrassed in the divisional game."

Some folks expect the Texans to come out like Tyson. Totally dominating from day one. But that rarely happens in the NFL. The Patriots, the Packers, the Colts... "small market" teams that are "feared" because they have found their QB.

It doesn't matter how many ex cons we sign, without that QB... we'll have the same mediocre team. We'll just be in the news a lot for all the wrong reasons.

So the big question then is it easier to win with amazing talent as in the Cowboys of the 90s or the 70s Steelers or schemes . I have a feeling that the Patriots could have been in the huddle with the Cowboys and not stop them on offense . I wish they would go back to a game where more emphasis was on running and defense and the QB wasn't so important . I bet more concussions happen because of passing than running even with the rules on defenseless receivers .

I had to relook at the title to make sure I was in a Strong thread.

I've been in a lot of newsgroups and forums over the years, and I've only been in one where the threads stayed on topic. In that forum, there was only one moderator and if he didn't OK a post, it didn't show up. If it wasn't on point, but brought up something good to talk about, he'd start a new thread for it. If he didn't like your grammar or your word choice, he would re-write/revise your post to suit his "standards" (and he was a South African phd, so he always had a field day with my posts.)

Every other forum/newsgroup has had threads that meandered as one post brought up something, and other posts answered that, while others drifted to other topics. That's just life.

I'm kinda enjoying the contradictions I received earlier in this thread. We need a receiver, and Strong has that potential. This might be the only time where O'Brien's "practice performance" aspect is applicable. If you're lazy and can't/won't run a tree in practice, not putting everything into blocks, if you're dropping everything in practice .. you're not going to get on the field. Obviously you're not even going to get on Sunday's 46.

Strong has small 9" hands. With the hard ball that Mallett throws, this could be a problem. I believe he has a tendency to body catch.

You could lose a spleen or get a lacerated liver doing that with Mallett gunning the ball to you.

This piece may very well give us some insight into what is going on in "practice".....and why O'brien says he needs to practice better.
It includes some great GIF examples of his deficiencies.

These are some of the reasons why I didn't like the Strong pick.

I also questioned his work ethic. But it really might just be a talent issue. Either way Strong is starting to look like another 3rd rd Smith pick.

There is little doubt Strong would have been a poor choice in the first and questionable as a second. But I still have hope that he will buckle down and learn the lessons needed to maximize the skills he does have. We are in the middle of that process and it looks ugly. But we are rolling the dice in hope that he'll get it and reverse the curse of 3rd round picks. It's not like the safe picks in the third have been brilliant.

Pick's been made. What's done is done and all we can do now is hope that he wants to work on his game and that he gets better (or at least good enough to do more than practice for us).

What's done is done seems to be a common theme down on Kirby, especially when it comes to the 3rd rd picks.
