A lot of FA O-Lineman come and gone this off season and the Texans made an offer to just one. That makes me think that they must be pretty confident in what they have right now, no matter what analysts or reports are saying. I would have liked to see them bring Rivera or Whale or DeMulling but they were picked up pretty quickly. I often forget that there is a whole other side that goes on behind closed doors. We see the games and hi-lights but nothing else. If they feel like Wand and feel Pitts will improve in 2005 then so be it. I wrote in an earlier thread that depth is what they lack. Maybe Wand will come around and McKinney's weaknesses can be over looked if the play at the Guard position improves but when Tod Wade goes down one week and Weigert is out the next, who backs these guys up. I just remember Milford Brown starting those games last year and from what i saw, he looked lost and just overmatched. I would like to see them add quaility depth to the o-line. Lets hope they have a plan in motion to do so. We don't need 5 all-pro lineman( that would be great) out there but rather 5 guys who can play the game and 3-5 more guys behind them that can come in and pick up at the drop of a dime where the starters left off. Guys who instill confidence in Carr and don't give up 3 sacks a game.

I think that the front offices wants to give the starting five more time to gel and work with each other. I mean look at the best o lines in the league(chiefs, last years packers, broncos, colts), the majority of those lines have been together for years. Then look at the worst like the 49ers, bills and raiders and those are the teams that get new players every year and don't give time for the linemen to feel each other out.

At the end of last season Casserly & Capers said that the two areas which needed to be addressed were the pass rush and protecting Carr. It seems, with the shake-up in our LB's, that this is the approach the team is taking to improve the first need. The fact that we have not made any moves with FA's leads me to believe that the plan is to address the second area of need, the OL, in the draft.
I'm hoping that the plan on the front burner is to trade down with our #13 pick.
There are three teams which I consider to be ideal targets with which to make a deal. Each of these teams have additional, first day picks which might make a trade-up more attactive - St. Louis, Green Bay and Philadelphia. My first choice would be a deal with St. Louis - our #13 for their #19 plus their #50. If the right player falls to #13, this is close to an even value, though slightly in our favor. We might kick in a second day pick.
St. Louis has two primary needs - RT and S - and a third area of concern - DE.
They really like David Pollack, but don't believe he'll be there at #19. He will, probably, be there at #13. If Alex Barron were to fall to #13, a trade might be very tempting. And Thomas Davis will, probably, be available at #13, but may be off the board when their turn comes up.
With the #19 pick I'd take David Baas as an OC. And with #50 I'd take OG/OT Logan Mankins (Fresno State).
Mankins in 36 games at Fresno, playing RT and LT, gave up only 6 QB pressures and 3 sacks. His 2001 season, playing RT, he protected, guess who, David Carr. Using a Bledsoe rating scale, he carries a grade of 1.1 for pass blocking and 1.3 for run blocking. For comparison, Elton Brown carries a grade of 1.0 and 1.3; and Baas, 1.1 and 1.2 (ratings from NFL Draft Scout).
Neither of these would probably start the season. But both are smart enough (Wonderlic: 37 and 31, respectively) to start challenging during the season, and would be ready for a strong starting push their second year.

i agree our depth on o-line is horrible...i'm still hopeing that we re-sign marcus spears (the offensive tackle)...he seemed to hold his own pretty well when he had to fill in...weary and milford brown always seem to be lost when they are out there...that's why i'm hoping we can draft a gaurd in the second round maybe even a center and have washington be the main back up for the gaurds...but the guys we have backing up our tackles are unknown players...gerrick jones?...if he wasn't on our roster i don't think any of us would know who he was...still think we need to address all positions of the offensive line either with the last bit of FA or in the draft

I think we will draft the bpa on defense in the first round again unless someone like Mike Williams or Ronnie Brown were still sitting there which are like million to 1 odds. David Bass at the 19 spot is a little high but you never know. I think he is an early 2nd rounder. I wouldn't mind seeing Pollack on our team as an OLB.
Aside from my criticism of McKinney, all the offensive line needs, for a change, is to allow them the time to practice together, and play together as a cohesive unit. Give them another season . . training camp, pre-season, and regular season to allow them to jell as a cohesive unit.
Spending a high draft choice on a rookie, and immediately plugging him into the line right from the getgo, will only accomplish two things. 1) Get Carr sacked while he's making mistakes, and 2) give all of you the excuse to call the rookie a bust.
