I remember way back after the first game of the season and saying. "We lost to the Chargers!?. Come on, they're the Chargers and we can't beat them. We are in alot of trouble this season."

Even IF our team had made the playoffs, it would probably have been a first round blowout.
As much of a Texans fan as I am, I cannot delude myself into believing that they are anywhere near the level of the Patriots, Steelers, or Colts.

Swisher, I know lots of teams have coulda woulda shoulda's, we're not a championship caliber team yet. Good point I was just venting my coulda woulda shoulda's for the year. Next year we should have a good mix of seasoned vets and young talent. Hopefully we'll crank it up a notch.
doublebarrel, I don't know that we would have won, but I don't think there's really anyone who can blow us out of the water, when we play well and we would have been fired up for the playoff game. We've got talent not enough "late season" experience and the coaching is still a question mark.

Well, the Colts beat us twice, the first time being a true butt whoopin' (49-14 anyone?). The second time was a little more competitive, but we never really measured up. Fortunately/unfortunately, we did not play the Steelers or Patriots this year, so we'll never know.

Yeah, I believe in the "any given Sunday" concept, but this team just hasn't been consistent from week-to-week this year, and that is what playoff caliber teams should be about (at least in the AFC!

As far as improvements for next year...think about it...we have a great QB, WR corps, and TE...and D.Davis appears to be healthy and back on track. So it comes down to our O-line. Maybe another year tweaking the zone system, added with a little more talent at tackle, and we could have a dominating offense. We have most of the ingredients, and we just need that consistent play week in/week out, with trench control at the LOS, to make a top-tier team, IMO.
As far as defense, I think we are on the right track. The two glaring weaknesses that I see are safety and a pass rusher that dominates. Again, most of the ingredients are there and we just need them to gel as a unit along with 2-3 more top players to give our D more depth of strategy.
Each year the chemistry of a given team seems to make or break success and failure with current NFL parity. So we just never know if any given year will be our year to make that magic run.
I do believe that we are now a full fledged NFL team, and we should start expecting big things. Perhaps I'm setting myself up, but that is the optimism of being a fan.

I dont like woulda coulda shoulda topics b/c the fact is it didn't happen. Looking back on this season, I think of how the team truly learned how to become a team.
People stepped up, they kept their mouth shut and they played tough in games they were supposed to.
I learned we aren't ready to make a run at the playoffs for a year or two, and that Peyton Manning is a good player

I am behind you 100%(D.B).....We need alot of work.....but we are making progress from year to year.If we can get to 500 for the season.....that is a serious acomplishment from last season.WE GOTTA BELIEVE!!!!!!!!!My ears will be pinned back at this years draft.Hope we can find another stud player like A.J and D.R.

I'll give you two. Consistant pass protection especially aganst teams with speed on the edge. And a better pass rush of our own. With these two improvements our team could compete with any team in the NFL and dominate many if not most.beerlover said:

You see...on November 2, 2003...we BEAT the NFC champions!
And on November 23, 2003 we took the SUPERBOWL-CHAMPS to overtime in a heartbreaker.
So what makes everyone think that the Texans would just roll-over. We're not the jags!
And it's proven the 2004 squad is much improved over our 2003 squad.

the Texans offensive line has made improvements, by constant re-tooling via drafting, free-agency and hard work I have no doubt the Bulls will become a famous offensive line. But who is this great TE? Seems like you are missing someone in your offensive line theology

This was my thought exactly. I was really glad we won and that we met my preseason expectation of 7 wins but I was pretty frustrated with our offense because of the lack of killer instinct they showed in the second half. But the reason I say frustrated is because the offense still did some good things and showed some aggressiveness against a very aggressive defense. Like the two INTs before the half. Not really David's fault the ball flies into the air when it hits Bradford square in the hands, and even though the last INT was thrown I was still happy to see that the Texans were willing to take chances throwing to Andre Johnson. Another year in the league and I think Andre Johnson finds a way to disrupt the play. But the other thing I liked seeing was our ability to maintain a drive and give our defense a breather. However, seeing a FG get blocked ticked me off.
