I really doubt Hali and Cromartie are available where you have them slated, but I'll take them...I'm not a fan of the Whitworth pick, as I don't believe he'll fit a zone scheme, but other than that, good picks...

Cromartie has barely played a season of football since he was in High School. Could he be a 2nd round pick? Sure. Will he be? Certainly not definite.

Between myself and the Penn State fan I run our site with we both agreed Tamba is a late 1st/early 2nd round prospect. Strong at the POA, plays under control and has a variety of ways to get to the QB, but lacks ideal speed or athleticism. Watch him and you can easily see his lack of COD ability. Nearly needs to come to complete stops when changing direction. This is from watching at least 20 games of Hali on my own over the years. We'll see his times at his ProDay coming up soon. If they're what I expect them to be, it's likely he could be around for the Texans.

Whitworth looked very good this season, then terrible at the Shrine Game and then great at the combine. Very confusing. If you can find me a Tackle you think would be better for Kubiak's system in the 3rd round I'll give you two cookies.:) While I agree he isn't ideal, not alot of guys in that range. He ran well and showed good mobility in position drills in Indy.

It is true that Cromartie doesn't have a lot of starting experience and is coming off of a major injury, but he has an amazing size/speed ratio (6-2, 4.41), and he's very good in coverage...It's hard for me to believe that a guy like Stanford Routt is worth an early 2nd, but Cromartie isn't...

As for Hali, I honestly doubt he'll be a 12 sack per year guy, but he is the best LE in the draft (depending on your views owhere Super Mario will play in the NFL)...I could see a team like Denver, Philly, Atlanta, or KC investing a first in Hali...If he's there at 33, I'm all for taking him, providing there isn't a superior OL on the board there...

Whitworth is probably the best fit for a zone scheme out of the OTs you have going in the 3rd, but that doesn't mean he's a good fit...It simply means that he is better than the alternative...If we were going to go OL here, I'd throw a vote in for Setterstrom then hope for Eslinger in the 4th...Our interior OL is of more concern to me than our tackles are...

i like a good few of the picks but theres a few other that dont make much sense to me- philly taking another DT- i think they'll go WR in the first
KC will def. go CB especially after yesterday
Why is cedric griffin rated so high and isee the bears taking lewis or pope(and cromartie is a sure-fire first rounder to me- ran a 4.39 at the combine 6'2, showed he was nearly over his injury, showed he was able to cover well before his injury)

I dunno.......but I'm thinking this was like the most accurate mock of them
all last year in being the predictor of the first round picks on Draft Day ? So
if they say the Penn State DE is still on the Board in the second round, I'm
hopeful that's the reality in this Aprils Draft. Of course, maybe they know something about his downside that the rest of us don't ?

I wonder.......... it's not only this mock, but mock's from all the most watched mocks, the more credible mocks have us taking a RB in the first round.... then in the second something like this mock(a DE) and not addressing the OLine till the third or later rounds........

Is this "We need to address this OLine" thing a figment of our imagination?? Is it just something we "talk" about on message boards or what??

I'm very interested in how you have Ko Simpson falling that far and us not taking him. I was just wondering out of curiosity. Do you believe other DB's passed him up or team needs have changed? Thats quite a drop actually for him, but I wouldn't complain if he fell to #33. I just want to know your reasoning please.

Ah yes, Philadelphia taking another DT. Thank you for bringing my team up so I can have some fun...:)

Hollis Thomas is a goner in Philadelphia. First, he hasn't had a sack since 2000. That's a bad sign in a 1gap scheme. Two, I happen to know his family personally. He's wanted out for some time now.

Paul Grasmanis will very likely be cut as well.

That leaves Mike Patterson, Darwin Walker who has underacheived for years since signing an extension and a rotational backup in Sam Rayburn.

Philly will certainly look DT very, very early. You have to understand Andy Reid and Tom Heckert's draft philosophy. Core positions. QB, DL, OL, DB. They value those guys over any other at all costs.

I'd say it's more then likely they'll go DL in the 1st round.

They could go after Santonio Holmes to play X receiver, but from all I've heard from our sources they'll look to address the position in free agency.

A little bit of both probably. My top picks for you guys at that spot were Eric Winston, Ko Simpson, Darryl Tapp and Tamba Hali.

We went BPA and gave Houston Hali. I could see an OT as well obviously, but I wouldn't take a lesser rated player just because my team needed it.

I wouldn't pass on Reggie Bush, BUT if Houston could trade down and still land Ferguson it would obviously be a great selection.

I have D'Brickashaw as my 2nd rated player in the draft actually.

I go back and forth on Ko Simpson. Personally, I wouldn't take him over guys like Donte Whitner and Daniel Bullocks, however as I see Bullocks as a SS in most schemes he wouldn't fit into the equation here.

One thing to keep in mind is that Safety is NOT the most sought after position in the draft. Guys like Gibril Wilson, Adrian Wilson and Madieu Williams are some of the best young Safeties in the NFL and were not 1st round picks.

Brian Dawkins is the best FS in the NFL in my opinion and was a very late 2nd rounder. Rodney Harrison was a 5th rounder.

I could see Ko going higher, but that's where we have him as of now. Again, we focus on drafting BPA rather then by need.

Thanks for the kind words.:)

I love Tamba Hali. Great kid. Tough kid. Great motor. Hell of a football player. The concern with Tamba comes back to his athleticism as I mentioned. He's a guy we spent alot of extra time watching for an Eagle's target in the 1st round and came away with concerns on his COD, speed and burst.

Think he'll be a productive player, but there are concerns.

As we get closer to the draft I'll have a better idea.

As always, I'll obviously post our final mock right before the draft. We're usually pretty accurate.

I'm good with Reggie in the first, and am all over Cromatrie in the third. Its the 2nd round and second third I have issues with.

For the 2nd rounder I'd take teh following before Hali:
DeMeco Ryans, OLB Alabama
Kamerion Wimbley, DE Florida State
Thomas Howard, OLB UTEP
Darnell Bing, SS USC
Ashton Youboty, CB Ohio State
Eric Winston, OT Miami
Darryl Tapp, DE VaTech
Donte Whitner, S Ohio State
Maurice Stovall, WR Notre Dame
Daniel Bullocks, S Nebraska
Ko Simpson, FS South Carolina
Charles Spencer, OG Pittsburgh
Jonathan Scott, OT Texas
Alan Zemaitis, CB Penn State
Daryn Colledge, OT Boise State
Sinorice Moss, WR Miami
Leonard Pope, TE Georgia
Rocky McIntosh, OLB Miami
Jonathan Joseph, CB South Carolina
Derek Hagan, WR Arizona State
Davin Joseph, OG Oklahoma

As for the second third:

Dominique Byrd, TE USC
Gabe Watson, DT Michigan - would be a steal here
Abdul Hodge, MLB Iowa
Richard Marshall, CB Fresno State
Parys Haralson, DE Tennessee
Mark Anderson, DE Alabama
Kai Parham, ILB Virginia
Stanley McClover, DE Auburn
Taitusi Lutui, OG USC
DeMario Minter, CB Georgia
Ryan O'Callaghan, OT California
Mark Setterstrom, OG Minnesota
Joel Klopftenstein, TE Colorado
Elvis Dumervil, DE Louisville
David Pittman, CB Northwestern State
Pat Watkins, FS Florida State
Devin Hester, ATH Miami
Jahmile Addae, FS WVU

Lots of good value in the third round of this mock, so much that if it really breaks this way I'd like to see the Texans trade up for another pick in the third.

I like the picks. I'm still hoping we take Young and take this franchise in another direction offensively, but sans that I'd take this draft right now. Hali has a bit of a William Fuller feel to him. Not ideal sized, but a high motor, uses leverage well plays with great urgency, and explodes to the QB in space. He would instantly be our best pass rusher. The 3rd round is too good to be true.

Greg Blue in the second, and ahead of Leonard Pope. Wow. I guess the Cincinatti GM is trying to get fired.

So, you're under the thought process that the Bengals should pass up a SS to draft two TEs in a row with Marcedes Lewis and Leonard Pope?

Like your Mock draft, well thought out @ addressing team needs. :thumbup

concerning Whitworth its a good selection, one I'm not going to agrue with. I will however add (since I've made my HoustonTexans Mock draft selection) Kevin Boothe to the discussion. I'm really impressed with his upside & intelligence and Boothe is ready to start @ LG now and in the future could be a starting RT for a good run zone blocking scheme. Its so hard to gauge how high his ceiling will be given the level of competition he faced but an intriquing prospect none the less. :)

I've never heard anything about Jonathan McCargo, yet you have him in the second round. Did he really just escape everyone's sight?

really good mock

i don't like the whitworth pick though, i don't think he fits the zone blocking scheme very well, eslinger would be a better pick there in my opinion.

Nope. Here I'll make it crystal clear. Greg Blue is terrible and if anyone drafts him on the first day they haven't watched many Georgia games. The fact that you have him going ahead of Pope, regardless of what team, is crazy to me(someone who has watched many a Georgia game).

I don't think I left any wiggle room for misinterpretation this time.

Two things...

First, if you haven't heard of him have you been listening? Not being mean, being serious. He's been talked about alot lately at the combine. Might have just missed it. Not many people are as sick and demented as I am with watching football all the time. Even drills are exciting to me.:yahoo:

Second, he is a bit overlooked by alot of people because he declared very, very late and is a Junior. He was also grossly overshadowed by Mario Williams and Manny Lawson for obvious reasons.

Mayock has him as a 1st rounder. That doesn't mean anything, but just citing another guy.

Perhaps explaining what you mean the first time would have behoved you huh?

Greg is terrible? I guess NFL scouts, personnel and GMs all are missing something that you've seen given that he was invited to the Senior Bowl. If you want to incorporate hyperbole into football that's your bag. I'm certainly not going to call a kid terrible because he struggles in coverage. He's one of the most physical safeties to come out in years. Marvin Lewis uses his SS like a 4th LB. Coverage isn't the big point with him.

Was Thomas Davis a "terrible player" too? Better athlete then Greg, but same concerns with coverage. Was Michael Lewis a "terrible player" out of Colorado? How about Roy Williams? Just checking.

I have Greg Blue as a 3rd round player. I've spoken to people in the scouting community that have him anywhere from the 2nd to the 4th round.

Maybe they're all *****s. Who knows.

Yes.

Matt_Alkire said:

Fred Gibson was invited as well, now he's out of the league.

Matt_Alkire said:

Nope. Anyone who think Davis and Blue are close to the same football player is mistaken. They may have the same "concerns" but Davis is clearly the better player.

I am not trying to rip your whole mock I just have strong feelings toward Georgia players and I feel many people haven't actually seen these guys play.

wags,

I understand you weren't and my goal isn't go get into arguments over a mock draft. It's how you came off there while not explaining your point. I also absolutely hate hyperbole when talking about football players.

I've watched quite a bit of Georgia. Just to let you know as I get the feeling you may not know our process, I watch roughly 40-60 hours of tape a week along with our other writer. It's long and tedious, but I'm sick enough to love doing it.

I agree with you on Greg Blue in alot of respects. First of all, he's clearly not the athlete Thomas Davis is. That's more then obvious. While Greg is a huge hitter, I also don't think he's as physical as Davis was. Thomas was an absolute beast for UGA. My point is that players always have concerns. I can remember having a conversation with a very well known writer about Thomas Davis before the draft. Thought he was a 2nd day guy at best with his coverage problems. I thought he was absolutely insane and/or smoking copious amounts of ganga. Different people see different things.

When I look at Greg Blue I see a physical guy that has alot going for him. I also tend to think he may make a better WIL then Safety. Thomas Davis is a waste at Safety to me. Not because he can't do it, but because he just has the LB mentally. Hurt everyone and take no prisoners. I don't see Greg as quite like that, but he's certainly close in the hitter department. My main concern is that he really, really struggles in coverage. I could see some teams having Greg as a 2nd rounder and some having him as a 5th rounder. His value will most likely be all over the place. With the Bengals, Marvin Lewis has said over and over again that they need a SS to come in and be a presence against the run. They brought in Ifeanyi Ohalete who is known for poor coverage and physical run stopping for that very reason. He's only an average player though and a stopgap. Didn't work out very well. Greg Blue fits what THEY look for in a SS.

Again, we look at what the team may do, not what we like. If I'm running a team, Greg Blue isn't a 1st day SS prospect. That's me though and last I checked, I don't own one unfortunately.:crying:

Fred Gibson? C'mon. People are invited to the Senior Bowl because these teams think they're some of the best players in the country. That has nothing to do with where they're ultimately drafted alot of the time. Some kids get to the Senior Bowl and don't do well hence, the drop in draft status. You know these things, but I'm just making a point. Are we going to case by case basis the failures and success stories that were invited over the past 10 years here? LOL.

I'm not nearly as high on Leonard Pope as you are. With all schemes aside, I'd take Davis, Fasano and perhaps even Lewis over Pope. For all of his size I have alot of questions about his ability to create seperation.

I always remember the Auburn game of this year with Pope as a prime example to me of this concern. Auburn lines up in a Double Eagle Bear set with Antarrious Willliams lined up in press coverage on Pope at the LOS. Williams is physical with him across the field, runs stride for stride with him and then outjumps Pope to nearly intercept a Shockley pass. Antarrioius is 5'11", Leonard is 6'7". That's just one incident, but indicative of what I saw in Pope alot this year.

His blocking is very good in my opinion. Body catches a bit much for my tastes, but in his defense he had to adjusts to so many balls from Shockley that I can't fault him entirely for that. Still, doesn't look to have natural hands. Then again, neither does Terrell Owens. Timed well at the combine, but I don't see that speed on the field. Perhaps it's because he's playing in the best conference in college football.

Now, depending on the team I could see him going extremely high in the 2nd round.

Lastly, every year TEs slide. I remember wanting so badly for Jason Witten to fall to the Eagle's pick in 2003 even though we had been told by numberous sources they would definitely draft LJ Smith. Well, we did draft Smith and Witten didn't go until the 3rd round. There were ALOT of people who had Witten as high as the end of the 1st.

Last year in my mocks I had Aaron Rodgers going to the Packers at 24 for a month straight. People made fun of that for weeks. Then draft day came....

Basically, I agree that Pope is the BETTER PROSPECT, but that doesn't always mean alot at the draft.

Hopefully we're fully understand each other now bro.:)

If the Texans traded #1 to tenn. for #3, #39, #99, & 2007 3rd round. ( draft value chart = aprox. 3000pts. each)

Lets say for fun that tenn. and NO draft a QB

Using this mock draft,
HOW ABOUT THIS !!!!!!!!!!!

#3 Bush RB
#33 Hali DE
#39 Winston OT
#65 Cromartie CB
#66 Hodge LB

2 of first 3 day2 picks

and 2007 3rd rounder

Not sure Titans would do this deal. But for fun, my picks would be:
1. Mario Williams DE
2a.Mangold C
2b. Donte Whinter CB
3a.Hodge MLB
3b. Koppenstein TE

We have opportunities to get both Ko Simpson and Richard Marshall.. i dont see us passing on both of them.

Richard Marshall > Cromartie

We shouldnt pass on Simpson.

I dont know about Marshall over Cromartie. I would take Cromartie just because of his potential and his size/speed ratio.

I can't comment on Richard Marshall intelligently enough to offer a solid opinion.

Sorry about that.

I really need to spend time watching him. Have to bust out some Bulldog tape.

Im no guru or anything, but wasnt everyone high on Winston the OT from Miami...now seeing as that is a huge glaring need for this team and him being available for the taking in the 2nd round would/should we pass on him?? I mean afterall da brick and marcus o'neil will both be off the boards by this time....just confusing to me...anyone care to shed some light??

After his combine, Winston showed he is over his knee injury ; most likely will go in first round.

I've heard scouts call him a 4th rounder so, I'm not sure I'd agree at all with you there.

Eric had a very, very rough Senior year. I'd disagree that he's back from his knee injury. Infact, if he is then I would be disappointed as his play was bad at times this year.

Eric is probably a high 2nd round pick. Saying he'll go in the 4th is just crazy to me, but there are a number of people who think that about him.

His sophomore year was awesome. That's where people will look when determining his upside. Again, I see him as a 2nd rounder. Could go higher, could go lower.

Thanks man, but I need to watch him play in games, not highlights. I have 3 or 4 Fresno State games on DVD upstairs I'll check out. :)

Let us know what you think.
