It's generally not good when someone writes or speaks of something they know nothing about. The vast majority of fans think it's all about the 40-yard dash and that it is the end all be all, then there are others that think the Combine is stupid because the 40-yard dash means nothing to so many players (positions) and that they don't even have pads on.
The bottom line is virtually every single drill attempts to measure quickness, explosion, and fluidity which are crucial to have in the NFL. I could be wrong, but I believe NFL Coaches and Scouts look at the Combine a little differently than the average person. It's a great place to compare these prospects side by side at the same time. At the end of the day- if the player doesn't look good on film, their chances of being drafted high are minimal.
Bottom line is that the Combine is an extremely useful tool for NFL people to use and the NFL is better because of it.

Each position only has a few drills that are important and specific to them. DEs don't need a top 40 time, they need a top 10 yard split. CBs don't need 30 reps. A QB doesn't need a 35" verticle. A OG doesn't need a 10'3" broadjump.

Think of the combine as one big job fair. 300 applicants bring a resume into the event (game footage), are put through some basic and standardized tests (job applications), and then when a team feels like they have found a potential match, the player will recieve an interview with their potential employer. That, in a nutshell, is the NFL scouting combine.

The all encompassing medical testing. That will be a reason right there that the combine will continue.

It's a scouts tool. Why does a 300 plus pound guy need to run a forty ? To show if he is an athlete.

But the film suggest he just may be an OLT. Inspite of his forty time and the way in which he ran his forty...smoothly, that he is a great athlete for a three hundred and forty pound man. Is he quick enough to cut off the speed rushers ? That is what they pay the scouts and GMs the big bucks for.
I think we can all agree that Sedrick Ellis is a top DT in this class. However the fact is that Okoye out jumped him in a vertical jump. Does this mean that Okoye is a superior player than Ellis ? No. It just means that Okoye posses more explosive power from his legs. So now do you pay Ellis the same money as you pay Okoye ? The numbers clearly show Okoye is the better athlete ? Better football player...don't know about that one. Same in the shadow drill for the o-lineman...50% of the shadow drill is seeing how smoothly the three hundred pound o-lineman gets up from the ground. Is the guy a superior athlete who holds his weight well ? The last thing the o-line coach wants to see at any time is his o-lineman on the ground. The function of the scouts drill is to seperate guys. Does the tape agree with the drill. If not why ?
Cone drill: does the guy natrually dip his hips...the whatever you call it LB drill...change of direction...just a barameter. Not ment to be the be all and end all. Just a tool for seperating people from the pack. And seeing where a young player is at with his developement. I'm sure for the 24/7 all sports all the time fans it's a bit of a reach to wrap their minds around.
And I'm also sure for the baseball fan it is frustrating at the amount of coverage and sucess the combine has achieved. The only thing wrong with the combine is the lack of peoples understanding of the function of it. Was never ment to be a public display. It's a scouts tool so they can write a report on guys. That's it.

Sorry baseball guy if it is cutting down on the hot stove coverge. Or is it over coverage ? When is opening day BTW ? Over two months from now ?
The NFL draft is the biggest poker game on the planet. And I can understand at the revenue the event now puts into the owners pockets how some folks would be jealous of that.
No other american sporting event, in terms of off season attention and interest, has anything like it.

people like to pretend that scouts and coaches and GM's just ignore all game footage, then tune into the combine to select the best athletes. nonsense. a lot of players are compared side-by-side because they, as players, are very comparable to them, and when their play on the field is comparable, you need to start looking at them as an athlete.
actually you SHOULD look at the athlete first, because college is essentially just a training session for the real thing. many great players in the NFL who fell in the draft where great athletes who just didn't play on the field as well in college because they weren't coached well, then they get to the NFL and the right staff gets a hold of them and they become All-Pro. technique is very important in the NFL, and a lot of players don't get the proper mechanics till they reach the next level.
