Scenario nobody has talked about...Trading up?

I am of the opinion that we are going to trade Sage on draft day for picks, but what if we dont trade him for ADDITIONAL picks but trade UP to say Carolina at # 13 or Chicago at # 14 for Sage and a swap of firsts?

If the Texans fall in love with someone not likely to fall to 18, say a DRC/Mendenhall/Clady type but one of these 3 are the unlucky player that drops farther than anticipated on draft day do you trade Sage and 18 to swap picks with Carolina or Chicago and get your franchise CB or LT or RB?
 
Hmmm...I would like the extra pick in the 2nd or 3rd, but that would probably be a tempting offer for Smith and Kubiak if it's offered
 
I know its old, but the draft pick value chart has the 13th pick valued at 1150 and the 18th at 900 so there is a 250 point difference which would grade out to pick 68 (a high 3rd round pick) which imo makes it a possibility since that is where i'd imagine most of us are grading Sage's value (anywhere from # 1 overall to 4th round lol).

Just throwing out another scenario on draft day so that none of us are suprised by what Smithiak actually does on our favorite day of the offseason...
 
In a similar thought, how about the Texans swapping their 3rd + Sage for the Vikings 2nd round pick? The difference between the two according to the draft value table is 255 points, or a high 3rd round pick. The Texans get the 2nd round pick they want, and the Vikings essentially give up a 3rd.

Another possibility, i'd really like this if Anthony Collins from Kansas is still on the board at that pick. I think Collins would fit our ZBS perfectly at LT and most mocks have him going as a 2nd round pick.
 
I've actually brought this up in a couple of other threads, and I like the idea in two scenario's.

The first one probably isn't anything the Texans would ever remotely consider, but if Mendenhall falls past the 12th pick, I think he's a good enough RB and a good enough fit in the system to warrant trading up.

The other scenario would be an OLT. I think there's an excellent chance that there are 4 OLT's that go before #18. IMO, Otah is probably not worth trading up for, but Williams and Clady may well be worth trading up 5 or 6 spots. The only concern here is that according to his Wonderlich score, Clady's dumb as a stump, and OL isn't an area that you can afford to start dummies, so that may factor in.

Given that the other areas of need (CB, LB) will likely have good options available at #18 - I wouldn't want to see them trade up for anything else. I think Stewart would be a good option at #18 (although again, I have a hard time seeing The Texans taking him there), but just like Otah, I don't think you trade up for him.

I would not give Sage and our third for a second. That is giving two thirds to move up to 2nd and personally I would not no matter what the draft chart point spread says.
 
I personally don't think Sage is going anywhere this season. I believe Kubiak when he says he was spooked when Schaub got injured last season. He were lucky that Sage wasn't injured or didn't have to miss any extended period of time due to injury. Most teams carry 3 qbs on their roster and the last couple of years we had a bunch of guys who were rookies or were almost street free agent types. Obviously, if the offer is too good then the Texans may make that move and trade Sage, but as of now I don't see it happening.

The point to the move is that the Texans may target someone in the 2nd round, and Sage could give them the ammo to make the move. It would have to be a draft day move in order to determine if a player they really liked made it to the Vikings pick. The CBs and the LTs could really begin to thin out by the mid-2nd round. It's pretty unlikely the Texans can find a prospect who can step in immediately at those positions with the 79th selection.

I'm not crazy about trading Sage, either. But if they do, they should get a player who can help right away in return. A draft day trade like this could help them get such a player.

I've given this some more thought :thinking:

in order for the Texans to move up its got to be a specific player they love.

my money would be on the best OT fit for the system available in this draft for the Texans, Chris Williams, Vanderbilt. this would drive the need to trade up (he will not be on the board @ #18). In order to get him your going to have to trade up ahead of the Broncos & Carolina. the logical team is the Bills @ #11. Sage can compete for the starting QB position, providing solid depth & they don't have to reach for a WR like Malcom Kelly or Limas Sweed adding extra value to their pick. For the Texans it solves a primary need, a hard to fill position & a perfect fit for them :beer:

That's what I'm thinking as well, Denver is a popular team to select Williams. I think Buffalo is a great team to trade with, not only for the fact that they are 1 spot ahead of Denver- but like you said they would get much better value at a position of need (like wr) at #18. Plus, if they wanted a WR, they could still probably get their pick of the litter.

I think the trade would work for us (move up to take Williams) and give them Sage. This would put sage as about the value that the Texans have "said they wanted". However, I don't know if the Bills would place that high of a value on Sage. I'm not saying Jp losman and Trent Edwards are two great QB's to have, but I think Edwards could be their future (I really havn't watched them at all though). If they want to get rid of Losman (trade to Minnesota?) maybe they would like Sage as the starter to allow Edwards more time to develop?

[Denver, Carolina, Chicago, Detroit, Arizona, and Minnesota are the teams between #11 and #18. Minn. is the most likely of the bunch to take a WR imo, and I don't see any WR's going top 10. unless a team trades up ahead of Buffalo (now at 18) they should still be able to get a Kelly or maybe Devin Thomas who's flying up the boards. They need a big target wide receiver and Sweed/Kelly/Thomas would all represent better value at 18.

Plus they wouldn't give up any draft picks to get a short term starting QB!

This post seems to say Sage for a second round and I'm ok with that. Just not Sage and our 3rd for the 2nd.

Actually there should be pretty good CBs and LT in 3rd.

hmmm. Smith has identified the worth at least for now of Sage as a 2nd. To trade a second to move up to 11 and get Williams seems too high & I really like the LT. I think I'd hold the#18 and push the Sage for a 2nd. I know here come the draft points.

So where's the line on this? Sage and next year's 3rd or this years 4th?

I do agree that Sage and a 3rd is too much (although this is a little bit dependent on where in the second round we're trading up to). In fact, I think I'd rather trade Sage straight up for a 3rd and have two 3rd round picks, then trade him and our 3rd and end up with a 2nd and no 3rd round pick, assuming mid-round on any pick we're talking about.

I agree with this thinking about Denver possibly going after Williams OMT. He is probably the best ZB LT in the Draft and probably won't fall past Denver or Carolina. The problem with this trading up scenario, as I see it, is that we would more than likely give up too much to get him. Also, I'm still not sure Buffalo would even want to trade, and I'm afraid that they'd want alot more than just Sage in the deal.

I guess I'm more for the trading down scenario or waiting at #18 to see if Williams by some chance falls, then "pulling the trigger" on a trade down if he doesn't. :shades: JMHO!
