Interesting. Texas goes from having one NFL team in Dallas to possibly having three teams in a rough triangle around Austin. I'd think this would be cool just to watch what happens to the Cowboy loving San Antonio fans and the Dallas hating Houston fans.
Would the people of S.A. be able to let go of their precious Cowboys? Who would Houston fans hate more? Right now it's Houston and Dallas and we have a very good semi-bitter cross-state rivalry. If there were three teams would that go away? I wonder if it might become like the very bland NBA version with the Spurs-Rockets-Mavericks where most of the time you don't care about at least one of the other two.
It would give Texas fair weather fans three shots a winner every year.

I can't say I'm surprised, and San Antonio would probably do everything possible to make it happen. I don't see them having the voting challenges that both Houston and Dallas had.
If the Saints were to relocate to San Antonio, there would probably be huge fan loyalty to the home team, which would affect the Cowboys fan base. IMO, that should make it all a fun rivalry.

If that were to happen, Id have an NFC team to root for. Im all for it, San Antonio is a great city with great fans (ask the Spurs) and is very well deserving of an NFL team. Would definitely make for some interesting rivalries within the state.

Wow, interesting...Just hard to imagine SA having a football team....But i don't think i could pry myself from the Texans...I guess i could view it just like the Spurs and Rockets...As long as the Spurs don't play the Rockets i'll go for the Rockets, otherwise my hearts with the Spurs

I think this has about as much a chance of happening as Billy Graham going on the Howard Stern program. The NFL has already practically come out and said they would either move a team to LA or grant them a franchise. In fact I heard on the news yesterday where Anaheim has a stadium plan ready to present to the NFL.
San Antonio can outbid.. but really the league has a huge say in whether the team is put in San Antonio.. and the league is desperate to get a team in L.A.
If the Saints are willing to move and negotiations have been called off.. they will be the L.A. Saints.. ill put money on it.

Well LA has the biggest chance of getting the Saints but since they don't even have a stadium location yet and probably won't til 2010 and the Saints little contract thingy ends in 2006 or something (I read it somewhere but can't remember) it would be possible for the Saints to go to SA just because LA wouldn't be ready. And there are lots of Pros to this the biggest one being that San Antonio has lots of attractions making it a great site for an SB so losing New Orleans woulnd't hurt the league SB wise, its a big city (population is 1,144,646), if any of the fans from New Orleans still like them they could still go every couple of games since it isn't very far, they could probably get a stadium easily since theres a lot of land and it would be a new stadium (unlike in LA where they can't decide were it would be cheaper to place a stadium and wether or not it would be a new stadium or a renovated stadium. And of course the best reason, I would be able to go see the Bucs once a year!
The Saints are currently asking the city of New Orleans for a new stadium, which would be the key to them staying in New Orleans, wether or not they get it I don't but I do have the design to the stadium. Its a retractable roof stadium with a capacity of somewhere between 60,000-70,000.

I agree San Anton would be a great place for a team.. its big enough.. it does have football fans.. and it would be a very good spot for superbowls.
I just dont think the league will give anyone else a team until L.A. has one. They want a team in L.A. as quickly as possible. if the saints are willing to move.. I think they will figure something out to get them to L.A.

Why should Texas have 3??? The Texans have enough problems fighting for airtime over the Cowboys, the Saints would have more cause San Antonio is probably Cowboy country. It wouldn't be a smart move on the Saints part because they wouldnt be able to compete against the Texans and Cowboys. No way Benson some how extracts the Saints from NO and does not move the
team to the LA area - LA is just too potent and lucrative to pass up and
so many others are drooling to get a franchise located there. Its gonna happen at some point in the near future and why I still thank the gods almost everyday that we got this franchise instead of losing it to Southern Cal.
And sure, SA is a good sports town but the Texas market would experience diminishing returns with a third NFL team and for sure SA is the odd man out. Technically SA is now the 2nd largest city in the state but SA metro is drawfed by DFW and Houston metros and would be another very small fan
base like Jacksonville, Tenneessee, etc.

this isn't going to happen for one reason and one reason only. San Antonio does not have the financial status to fill up a 70,000 seat stadium at the current NFL ticket prices. SA is an economical underdog. The wage base is well below that targeted by the NFL organization. The NFL organization won't allow this to happen for that very reason AND the desire to move/ franchise a team in LA.
The Alamodome is falling down around itself and was originally built too many years ago, mainly with the thought of 'if you build it, they will come', but they never did. Red McCombs lives in San Antonio, and he owns the Vikings, although he is currently trying to sell it. If ANYONE moved a team to San Antonio, it would have been him. And he was smart enough from a financial standpoint to NOT do so.
SA has the Cowboys training camp already booked for the Alamodome for the next couple of seasons, so that would also be a problem.
The city of SA has made some really dumb deals regarding trying to support Sports Growth. Last one being a Soccer deal that has the Soccer league laughing all the way to the bank. The PGA got shot down a few years back due to lack of support by the town residents, even though the Mayor did everything but bribe a federal judge to get it to go through.
SA is not going to financially be able to support an NFL team. It would end up being another Jax stadium where half the stands were empty and TV blackouts the norm, IMHO.

The next EXPANSION TEAM will go into LA if someone doesn't move their team there first. However, I believe that the owner of an existing team has the option of where he wants to move his team. Granted that it has to be ok'd by the NFL, but I doubt very seriously if the NFL could mandate to an owner where his team would move.

The Alamodome is a dump. $200 million dollars won't fix it, especially with Reliant Stadium and the new Cowboys Stadium sitting a few hundred miles away making it look even worse.
I think the NFL would require them to build a new stadium in SA. I just don't see it. I think the Saints eventually stay in New Orleans and the folks in LA will just yawn and go back to getting their botox.

Coming from a Texan fan that lives in san antonio (originally from houston) an nfl team will NEVER make it here. Many have stated several good reasons and the biggest is that san antonio's market isnt big enough for an nfl team. its a tourist city and the "thriving" population would NEVER agree to pay for a new stadium or even the 200 mil it would take to fix that piece of crap alamo dome they have now. Economy is too weak, population is forever fluctuating (and not with the population that has a lot of money), and for those of you who THINK san antonio would be a good host to a superbowl...perhaps you should come by and stay around here a bit longer than a weekend/week vacation....its not a city that can host any large event....it was lucky enought to host the college playoffs...but even then it didnt do a very good job of accommodating it....so although you all may wish for it....it will not happen until this city can generate a significant increase in income...

I am a Huge Texan fan in SA. There are several reasons why this will not happen now. They have all been listed above. From the alamo dome sucks to the money issue. But also I don't think Jerry Jones would let it happen. The fan base for the cowboys here is just STUPID. I mean they are just fanatical. I could see jerry handing the Lousianna Government and 100 mil check.
With that said I think a team being here in 2010-2015 might not be that far fetched. One the economy around here is about to boom. We have Toyota with 1000 jobs not counting supporting jobs. Them possibly Washington Mutual with 3000 good jobs. So finacially we are on a role.
Next task would to propose a stadium that is not on the "bad" side of town. San Antonio has a nack of putting attractions where people that live here wont go.

personally i dont like the idea of them moving to texas. But if they do, it will be fun to beat both of the other texas teams

1. Tom Benson is a terrible owner. Have you followed his dealings with the LA gov't for the past 15 years? It's all been about 'how much can you pay me?'. Ironic, Benson and McCombs both came from car dealership empires, they both are squeezing the bejeezus out of two pennies, and they both view football purely in terms of a business bottom line. Now before you go getting all holy on me about how football IS a business, let me just say that owners should also have enough passion for the game in order to help make those franchise decisions that make 'fan' sense, but not business sense. McNair has it with the Texans; Benson is a greedy toad.
Wherever he moves the team, they will tire of his pauper mentality in only a few years.

After what the Titans went through in Memphis, the Seahawks at the Huskies' field, and the Bears at that other state college while their stadiums were being built, I think Benson would be reluctant to take the revenue hit of playing 'on the road' for three years.

How about the Dallas Saints ? The Cowboys are moving to Arlington when
their new stadium is built over there and there are rumors the team may be known as the Arlington Cowboys or perhaps the Texas Cowboys in respect for the other Arlington team, the Rangers. But with the Cowboys moving to
the Ft.Worth/Arlington metro area Dallas metro will need a team of its own and the Dallas metro is bigger than SA metro so it should be in the running for the Saints in they leave NO.

san antonio would be a great football town in my opinion...there is so many themes that could go along with a san antonio team...the people would create a kansas city like atmosphere...plus texas is the biggest football state in the nation...if new york gets three football teams so should texas...nuff said

Why a 4th team in Cali? cause there is a market for it. Texas is the SECOND biggest state in the continental U.S. behind Cali. The Raiders are turning a profit, the Chargers are turning a profit(now) and the 9ers.. even if they werent turning a profit.. I just dont see them moving that franchise. There is a market for a team in L.A. Besides.. if ya look at the layout of the NFL teams over the entire U.S... you will notice that there are VERY few teams in the western half of the country.
