Salary Cap

One of our message board members, aj, goes to a great deal of trouble to investigate NFL rules and the convoluted contract structures used today to maintain a spread sheet of the Texans' salary cap status. He has graciously allowed his salary cap worksheet to be posted here. Thanks also to the folks at houstonprofootball for hosting aj's work.

Please understand that the salary cap is a very complex calculation that changes with the regular season, post-season, through various pre-season periods, etc. and that reliable information particularly with regard to the complex options, performance bonuses, escape clauses, etc. is very hard to come by, much less interpret.

Please make this thread a place to discuss Texans' salary cap issues and to thank aj for maintaining this information for us.

If anyone runs across anything on how the bonuses for G. Walker, Wade, and Smith were handled (roster bonus v. signing bonus) please contact me with the info. Thx.

Great info. When the 2005 cap hit is listed as $0, does that mean that player will be a free agent after this season?

I love our cap situation we can go after a few more players after top veteran players will be cut because of cap situations June 1. I would like to get a strong safety, Inside Linebacker & a good backup Nose Tackle!!!! Donovan Darius and Jeramiah Trotter would fit perfect into what i'm Talking about.

Ok, maybe this isn't the thread to ask but about the contracts, what's up with asking players to renegotiate their contracts or they'll waive them? I understand there are no guaranteed contracts in thr NFL but that is coldblooded for someone like Eddie George who gave his blood sweat and tears to his team only to be asked to take a paycut on a SIGNED contract or they waive him.

I'd like to know who's the Player's Union Rep for the NFL that was asleep at the wheel at the last CBA.

It is the flip side of players holding out and demanding more money than their contract calls for because they claim they have overperformed--see Ogunleye, McCardell, etc. Teams tell players that are no longer performing to the level of their contract that they want to keep them at their current market value but that they can live without them if the player insists upon their full contract. Both sides play the game. In addition, the players know that the latter years of their contracts are unlikely to be paid without restructuring for instance in order for the Titans to exercise the last four years of McNair's contract they would have to pay him $50 mil after the 2005 season--yeah, that's happening. The no guaranteed contract thing is really misleading--large portions of the contracts are guaranteed, i.e. the signing bonus such as the $34.5 mil that Manning received up front on his new $98 mil contract.

I thought the signing bonus is separate from the contract money; meaning that Manning will get 34.5 mil plus 98 mil for the duration of the contract.

It is all in the wording of the announcement. Generally they announce the total package value including the signing bonus as in the $98 mil deal for Manning which includes the $34.5 signing bonus. Occasionally you will see a report stated akin to "he will receive $3 mil over the next four years, plus a $2 mil signing bonus." If you don't see something explicit the safe bet is they are including the signing bonus (and any other roster bonuses, etc.) in the total package value reported.

AJ--do all the signing bonuses for the 93 players currently on the roster count in the salary cap or is some accommodation made for the fact that 40 players are going to be signed and cut?

All signing bonus money counts when paid to the player but a lot of the long-shot guys don't get a bonus of any type. Other than that, only the top 51 salaries count against the cap until the season starts.

I need to update the cap worksheet....I'm way behind. Been a little busy with other stuff.
