NEW ORLEANS The New Orleans Saints released veteran wide receiver Jerome Pathon today and resigned veteran special teams ace Fred McAfee to a one-year contract.
Pathon has one year remaining on the four-year, 10 (m) million dollar contract he signed in 2002.
His release clears three-point-25 (m) million dollars from the Saints' 2005 salary cap.
The move also opens playing time for 2004 second-round pick Devery Henderson, who the Saints feel is ready to take over the number three receiver spot behind starters Joe Horn and Donte Stallworth.
Pathon ranked third on the team with 34 catches for 581 yards and one touchdown last season.
