RIP Buddy Ryan

Former NFL coach, defensive guru Buddy Ryan dies at age 82

I remember as a teenager and a fan of the Oilers his famously mollywhopping Kevin Gilbride on the sideline. Thought that was great at the time.

Of course as I became more of a fan of the game I became more aware of just how much Ryan had brought to it as a defensive mind and personality. The 46, we all already know, was terrific and a pleasure to watch.

RIP coach.

Mollywhopping, it looked more like harmless flailing like when Maximus stuck a blade in Comudus' throat.

Good DC.

RIP....certainly legendary but very overrated as coach...he's right up there with his counterpart Ditka imo of guys who are worshipped for having achieved not a whole lot.

Ditka, Ryan:
Superbowl, arguably one of the best defenses ever. I'd say that's a achieving a lot.

Won SB III as DC of the Jets which helped force the AFL/NFL merger, Had arguably the best defense of all time 86 Bears, Great defenses in Philly and really good ones with the Oilers/Cards. I would say he accomplished more than most as a coach. Not overrated at all, I hope you will/have accomplished half as much in your career as Buddy did.

RIP Buddy, thanks for the memories.

Overrated in terms of how much he is revered & what he accomplished vs. guys like say a Marv Levy, who aren't talked about nearly as much despite their historic & lengthy achievements doubling what Ryan was ever able to do.

Aside from that, he wasn't the DC of that SB III jets team, he was just the defensive line coach... most folks don't even know he was part of that game in any capacity anyway. Regardless, he's is revered for basically 1 season's worth of work in 85' where it all came together...yes it was a great season & yes the 46 defense was his brain child, but its rise to dominance is directly related to Singletary's rise & his abilities to anchor the middle of it solo. He could never duplicate its success anywhere he went as his teams in Philly largely under-achieved.

In all honesty, i don't really see the difference between him & Jerry Glanville when he was the d-coordinator for the falcons during their gritz blitz days..Had Glanville had some semblance of an offense like Ryan had, he probably might've been able to finish that season off with a SB too.

Aside from 85' in chicago where he was a prominent figure, He is more known for being a character & all the other novelty type stuff...i.e. the "bodybag" game and "bounty" bowl & his "get off my lawn" moment in Houston when he tried to punch out Gilbride.

Rip Buddy. You were a mean old sob. Your 85 bears sb was one of the first games i remember as a kid. Your time with the oilers made me enjoy watching defense as much or more then the offense. Your one of the reasons im a football fan today. It's a shame the west coast o came along so fast and killed the 46.

Fair enough. His old ass had the stones was all.

First time I've ever heard someone say they were proud of Buddy for doing that. It was one of the most embarrassing things in Houston sports history, and created a huge wedge in the team's chemistry right before the playoffs. To each its own I guess.

Didn't say proud. Was saying it was entertaining while I was a teenager.

Didn't mean to offend a lifelong bastion of maturity such as yourself there, Texecutioner.
