Rating Our Draft Picks

I think poeple should stop saying "o well that player is worth an 8 pick" well maybe not to other teams but when most of our positions our weak everyone in the draft that will go in the 1st is worth the 8 to us......if there is someone in the 1st that we need, we need not to shy away becuz we feel he isnt worth the 8 pick.......if he will start and make an impact then they are worth the 8 pick.......
list of players hat would help our team and we shouild get at the 8
adrian peterson
jamarcus russell
joe thomas
levi brown
laron landry
reggie nelson
calvin johnson
leon hall
jamall anderson
alan branch

i want you to place these players in order of importance....highest to lowest and tell me what you like about them....

It's difficult to make a priority list because you don't know what the Texans will do prior to the draft. Are there 8 players in this draft who can become very good/great players? I think there are at least 10. Without the benefit of foresight into the Texans plan, I would rate them now on overall talent:

JaMarcus Russell
Calvin Johnson
Adrian Peterson
Brady Quinn
Joe Thomas
Amobi Okoye
Jamaal Anderson
Gaines Adams
Levi Brown
Alan Branch

I like your general idea :lightbulb:

here is my opinion/breakdown of who the Texans could choose (in bold no particular order) if available with the 8th pick :bubble:

first order of buisness which the Texans should be almost finished- evaulation of current players on the roster. did they meet expectations? is there a future for them with the Texans in the context of what Kubiak wants to see? once this process is complete then a consensous can be reached regarding contracts & seeking Free Agents that meet needs. We'll have to see what transpires here first & who they can sign or those they let go.

through the draft you build your foundation, cornerstones, the type of player you can develop who fits your system. the chances are other teams will be looking @ the same talent but have other ratings for them based on their own personel/needs. this is where Smith/Kubiak should excell.

Levi Brown vs. Joe Thomas

one maybe both will be gone by the Texans pick. Thomas is a good fit for Arizona because of their franchise QB Matt Leinart mobility, he needs that classic pocket protector, Joe does not move as well in space & is better in pass protection. Levi is a demolishing drive blocker, who is adequate in pass blocking but fits a zone blocking system like the Texans use better.

Brady Quinn vs. JaMarcus Russell

Russell is a shotgun style QB, like VY (maybe a reason why the Texans passed last draft on him) does not fit the style that Kubiak likes (hence his idea he could help rebuild Carr). Brady is an upgrade over Carr yet would fit Kubiaks system better than Russell with better progressions than Carr.

Marshawn Lynch vs. Adrien Peterson

Peterson is a feature back with explosive power & speed into the 2nd level. does he fit the Texans system, maybe not but do you tweek his style to fit your system? needs to show in workouts he has soft hands & can make this transition in space. Lynch is a better fit for Kubiaks system but the Texans would be better served to trade down if he is their target. should be a top 20 pick.

Jaamal Anderson vs. Gaines Adams

Gaines is a terrific prospect but with Babin/Peek does he provide a need or vast improvement? basicly a speed rusher off the edge with excellent pursuit from the backside (reminds me a little of Derrick Johnson) but does he stand up the test in run support? Jaamal is a good paring w/Mario @ end. he has the size the Texans like and could switch with Mario depending on matchups making it extra difficult for teams to game plan against, not to mention freeing up both in pass rush without commiting extra bodies.

Amobi Okoye vs. Alan Branch

MorKnolle has already detailed this, in summary Alan Branch is a better fit as a DT for 3-4 team, Okoye is a playmaker from the interior in a 4-3 however I'd like to add his lack of height is a concern for me, at this point I'm not convinced which way he should tweek it. he came into the Senior bowl at 287 with the speed and spin moves of a DE, so the quesiton would be what position do the pros see as his natural position/weight?

Ted Gin Jr. vs Calvin Johnson

With Andre Johnson the Texans have their #1 WR, could two coexist? Ted Ginn is a field stretcher the kind that Troy Williams was suppose to be when the Vikings drafted him @ #8 in 05. he could be that "playmaker" Kubiak is talking about, he could stretch defenses (of course David still needs time to throw the ball) also with Jerome Mathis a big question mark? Ginn is excellent in KR duites.

damn as I'm posting this Casserly just came on the Rome show, divine intervention :drunk:

Take any WR dreams you have off the board in the first round, as we have significantly bigger wholes to fill. I dont think Lynch is better then Peterson, and all this talk about "Kubiak's system" needs to stop, as of right now we dont have a system and usually alternate between zone and regular blocking schemes. When it comes to a running back like Peterson, who runs with lots of power, is patient for his blocks and dosnt dance around in the backfiled, you just give him the ball 25 times and dont worry about a system, he will find a whole and hit it.

The "playmaker" quote is not nothing. We can't know for certain exactly how to translate exactly what his coach speak means by "playmanker". Is he saying a playmaker somewhere in the draft. Or is he saying a first round, bona fide, stud. I look at the boards and I see only three "playmakers" in the first round. He also said he wants to generate a pass rush with just the front four on the deffensive line...without sending people. So we've got to enterpret what that means. Knee jerk he's talking about Ginn Jr. or All- Day and a defensive young lion along the line. Up to us to guess which will be where, when and to what value to the team Kubes and Smith put to each . But, it's not nothing. My enterpretation....need to just get the play off to get someone in a position to make a play. Higgens or Davis can be that guy, that won't require a first round pick.

Good thing you are not a fish there david we'd never get the hook out. So what are you going to do if the annual seasonal wounds incurred by all day are not nothing. There ARE something. The guy can't substain a ten or eleven game effort, much less a sixteen game effort with out getting hurt. Is he still going to be worth the twenty-nine million you're going to spend on him ? Sure hope you're correct on your projections there big guy. Then there's the second thingy...Spencer doesn't make it back...you prepaired to go two tightends and bang it all seaon long with the grey beards on our team for sixteen games ? just saying there. Just for the record, what in your mind would justify this pick. I mean what kind of numbers can All day put up behind this o-line and satisfy everyone. Just like to see one of you guys post it. Play off run and 10 TDS, 1600 yards ? Just what should our levels of expectations be for All Day once he is in the fold? Inquiring minds would like to know.

i agree with threetoedpee what can ap give us that would make us substantially better? we have a balanced run game.....but we dont have a balanced passing attack.....its so inconsistent....if we could get a new tackle and get our guys healthy and some more depth then the passing should improve.....i think carr will be suitable for what we need as of now....he did a good job of keeping us in the game in the beginnig of the year...so get our oline better and then keep the runnning game going....then we will be better...then there is the defense.

i think our oline would be great if it were
lt levi brown
lg chester pitts
c steve mckinney
rg fred weary
lt charles spencer
keep winston as swing tackle... and depth

O-line. I don't care if it's thomas or what, or even if we trade down. Our offensive line has been an unbelievable embarrassment for this team since we started. I would love to see a tackle, and even if we kept Salaam for depth and moved Winston to Guard (where I've read some people say he projects well to).
Joe Thomas
Levi Brown
LaRon Landry
Reggie Nelson
Adrian Peterson
Jamaal Anderson
Alan Branch

That's my order. I'm not interested in any of the others.

(edited because I'm dumb and forgot the safeties)

I can't add anything to these posts. I value the cover corner over the Safties. But there isn't one there around eight. Make an aruement for Hall. But are you saying Hall is the same as Champ Bailey in your eyes ?

So we need, front line o-lineman...OLT
A cover corner to move Petie back to nickle.
D-line help so when we do send a blitz...someone gets there.
If I was certain All Day was the next Jim Brown, ok you take the skill guy ahead of the o-lineman once again. I'm just not as certain as the majority that this is the case.

1-5 Joe Thomas, Calvin Johnson , Brady Quin, Branch and Okoye

6-11 Levi Brown ( there's only two of them this draft), Adrian Petterson, Ginn Jr., JaMarcus Russel, Gains Adams.

11- 18, Nelson, Landry, Criss Houston, Jammal Anderson, Darrel Revis, Patirck Wills, Dwayne Bowe.

19-26 Dywane Jarret, Marshwn Lynch, Adam Carriker, Leon Hall, Brandon Merryweather CB/FS, Lawrence Timmons.
