Random Draft scenario

The Jets have just franchised Abraham and are looking to trade him. The Jets trade up to the #1 spot and take Bush. They send us Abraham with their 3rd and 4th picks. With the 4th overall pick we take Mario Williams. Suddenly the Texans have a nasty front 4 for their new 4-3 defense.

Williams & Abraham with a DT rotation of Walker, Smith, Payne and Johnson. Peek and Babin can stay at OLB or rotate at DE.

If we get Abraham then I doubt that the Texans go after Williams. I think that it is almost a lock that we go for Ferguson if we pick up Abraham, becuase that would fill 2 immediate needs. We would have our big time pass-rushing DE, and a franchise LT to protect Carrs blind side. I think that things are setting up nicely for a trade.

I agree...if we get trade for Abraham we won't pick Mario; nor should we. Babin/Peek should be the rotation at weakside DE and Abraham at strongside (even though Abraham is more of a weakside DE IMO.)

If this trade happens, I see us maybe taking a LB (Hawk), FS (Huff), etc. I still think that the Texans feel like they can pick up a quality LT in the 2nd round; I don't think we need to spend our 1st round on one (D'Brick.):twocents:

A franchised player is supposed to traded to another team for their 1st and 3rd in the upcoming draft. Other deals can be worked out though with league approval.

Soooo.......if we get Abraham, under the normal franchise player trade parameters, we will not have a 1st rd'r. Is that what you really want?

The only way I see it is we give up....hmmmm...let's see....hmmmm....Carr and swap spots for Abraham, their 2nd, and their next years 1st rd'r. But if that were to happen we would have to find a viable QB. Brian Greise is supposed to be available and he knows Kubiaks ways. Short termer, very short termer.

The standard compensation under a franchise tag is 2 1st rounders. The process is the player gets franchised. A team can sign him to an offer sheet. The franchising team can match the offer sheet or refuse and they get 2 1st rounders. Commonly what occurs is as what happened with Pace. The franshised player works out a contract which is acceptable to him but does not sign an offer sheet. The two teams then try to negotiate compensation less than two 1st rounders.

If the player signs with another team, the new team is required to give up two first-round picks if the former team doesn't match that offer, regardless of when the player was drafted.

Since the price for signing a franchised player is so high, what teams sometimes do to get around that is arrange a sign-and-trade. The franchised player would sign a new contract agreeable to his new team, then immediately get dealt for a draft pick or picks from an interested team. That way, the player gets a new contract and a new team, but it works out between the teams because the price isn't two first-round picks.

A 1st and 3rd are the compensation for signing a RFA who has received a high tender offer from his team.

How bout they keep their first rounder next year, we keep Carr, and we get a second. Yes we would be giving up a first round pick, it would be the one that they would have traded if the had decided to trade up without sacrificing Abraham.

How about the Jets end up trading down a couple of picks and we trade with the Packers and take Mario Williams. Bottomline the Packers have to get someone who can help now. They will be pretty active in FA and they will want a high pick that can come in and really get the job done. Reggie Bush would go along way in Mike Mcarthy's new offense.
