Question about roster depth

It usually depends on type of offense and defense in use, I would say as an average 3 or so. I think with Kubiak we will see 4-5 RBs and 4-5 WRs for type of offense he will run. You definitely want depth on DL.
 
Well, if you want to go by Madden....you have a MINIMUM of:
QB: 3
HB: 3
FB: 1
WR: 4
TE: 2
OT: 4
G: 4
C: 2
DE: 4
DT: 3
OLB: 4
MLB: 2
CB: 4
FS: 2
SS: 2
K: 1
P: 1

This gives you 46 players you have to have, plus 7 flex (up to 5 max). Teams almost always have at least 5 WRs and at least 5 CBs, giving us 48. Now there are 5 open slots
 
I believe the roster in NFL nowadays is 53 correct me if I'm wrong because I think it changed and added7-8 more.

There is some variation on the 50 non-specialist, the ability to play Special teams matters greatly for the last 4 or 5 for most team. Examples guys like Evans have a "position" but in theory they are really starting special teams players.

Because of the limited spots a guy like simmons who can play all the DB positions and is pretty good on most special teams units, often get a roster spot over a more talented player who is poor at special teams or only plays say CB.
 
I hate wasting so many spots on TEs. I know they are versatile because they can be either WRs or OL, but it seems like wasted spots to me
 
Denver started the season last year with 5 WRs. Their #3 receiver was Charlie Adams with only 21 catches all year..... so get used to the TEs and RBs/FBs catching the ball.

Johnson Moulds Mathis and Walter are probably the top 4. Armstrong will be in a battle....Kubiak really likes David Anderson ... then there's Starling and Morgan whose games are similar.

Can't make blanket statement like that w/o knowing which players are involved and the ability of said players to play special teams or do something else. As an example if a TE is good special team player, and is either quick enough to line-up in the slot or can play some FB, then he may have more value than a WR who only can play WR and one unit of special teams.

i like gtexans roster, but i would rather go with NT Payne rather the LB Evans.

We would be carrying 8 dl's and 7 lb's, but Peek and Babin can both be emergency LB's so in a sense 9 lb's.

Im not sure polk will make the roster, Rainer and Pierce may beat him out.
 
I have Payne and Wade getting cut for June 1st cap casulties. I think Polk has been solid as MLB backup for a few years, and is a good special teams player. Same can be said for Evans, imo. Theres a lot more competition this year, though, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see

Behind DBs, TEs are the most injured position in the NFL. Plus TE's often come in two types that should be broken up like RB into HB/FB.
Blocking End and Receiving End. The Blocking TE seems to be going the same way the Fullback is in the NFL.

Guys like TO ( 6'3 226 ), Moss ( 6'4 215 ), and M.Jones ( 6'6 229 ) are really close to being what a TE is defined as: Winslow ( 6'5 250 )

RB - Running back
BB - Blocking Back
3B - Third down back

TE - Tight End
BE - Blocking End

You cut Payne and yo uonly have 2 DT's - Smith and TJ. Though I know Weaver and Williams have played the position.

I say they keep Payne and go with 1 less LB.

Polk has a real shot at making the starter at ILB (imo). At the very least I see him being one of our top backups.

You may want to pencil in Antoine Smith at RB, sounds like we may sign him this coming week. I thought they cut Evans and Anderson at LB?

I doubt we will have 5 active RB's on the roster, even if we do become a run-oriented offense. Look to see some of the guys mentioned on the Practice squad which has been expanded this year.

The practice squad was expanded from 5 to 8 back in 2004. I'm pretty sure it's still 8.

The Broncos carried 5 RB/FB last year so there's no reason to doubt that happening here. Actually that's a fairly common number for teams to carry. Based on today's roster DD, Morency, Antowain (if he signs), Lundy and Cook would be the 5. If Antowain doesn't sign, the kid from Syracuse might have an outside shot but that would mean a very young and inexperienced backfield.
 
You forgot about owens our 4th round pick. You do not pick first in the 4th round and not make the opening day roster.
 
Owen Daniels.

There could easily be 4 TEs making the roster. See Denver Broncos. Daniels is a guy they can move around. I won't go so far to say Frank Wychek but he is the H-back type.

Actually he did make my roster, if you'll check again. I listed him in the running back category, becuase I think they'll use him like Cooley in Washington. By keeping him, we have the ability to keep the other TEs

Actually, I don't remember where so i can't provide a link, but I believe that they doubled the size of the practice squad to 16. I could be mistaken though so dont take this as fact.

I know they said the new collective bargining agreement changed the number and it was a substantial increase.

Floyd over McKenzie. I don't see that happening but you never know. I think McKenzie will challenge Sanders for #4 CB and Floyd will be a practice squad player.
 
Floyd is a strong safety. I don't see him bumping any of the safeties and definitely none of the corners for a spot. Why would we carry '4' TEs?

according to pat kirwan when the new cba went into effect the practice squad would consist of 8 players and the new developmental squad would also consist of 8 players total now to 61 was on sirius radio can't give link sorry
 
Sure would like to see a link because in the old CBA the practice squad and the developmental squad are the same thing.

Are you guys sure you're not getting this confused with NFLE exemptions?

If Murphy makes the team, it will be as an offensive lineman...Daniels will be the fourth TE on the roster (not listing in any particular order)...

Murphy is too small to be listed as a Tackle... I could be wrong though. I just randomly sampled OL in the NFL and they all weighed in at least 290 ( most in the 300-330 ).

Murphy is at 268 last year. That's almost a 40-50 lb difference on average.

I realize that the position says TE, but he is officially number 79, which is a number for an offensive lineman...He doesn't have to gain that much weight in order to be "lineman" size in a zone scheme, though, since it's a possibility that if he tries to gain too much, his agility and mobility will suffer...

I also found this excerpt from the main page:

Yeah I remember seeing that... should be interesting. I never thought they would list Murphy as a tackle though. I know his services were purchased for the blocking kinda Tight End job, so that is his forte.

Looking at Denver's current line they have some lite weights on the inside from center to guard 280-300, but their tackles are in the 290-300+ range. ( I know that looks like nit-picking because you have to also gauge their muscle power along with the weight to get total applied force ).

If he has 20-30 pounds to put on... I guess he can rule out getting any Subway endorsements.

At least until next season :D

I would wager that if he did line up as a tackle , it would give the opponent something extra to think about. Especially if he lined up on the weak side/left tackle! Obvious running down... maybe,maybe not. I would rule out long pass though.
