Pre-draft assessment of Mario Williams

This is from Sporting News, March 16, 2006. The article is debating whether the Packers should take AJ Hawk or Mario at the 5th pick (because at that time there was no way he would be ahead of that):

"I dim the lights and turn on the N.C. State tape of Williams for the 200th time.I am awed. I see a beast who swats away 320-pound blockers as if they were flies. He can pass rush through offensive tackles or go around them. I see a huge, explosive end who will pose matchup problems for many offensive tackles. I see a powerful tackler-a player who can shed a blocker and make a play against the run. I see rare athleticism for a guy who is 6-7, 295. I see a bigger Julius Peppers.

But I don't like everything I see. I don't see the kind of instincts I look for. I see a lineman who doesn't always read the play correctly. I see a player who needs to develop an inside rush and learn to split double-teams. I see a player who doesn't go the same speed on every down. I see a player who performed unevenly last year and subsequently was pulled from the starting lineup for a game.
I see the physique of an alien and 14 1/2 sacks last season, but I also see a player who, according to a vote by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association, was the fourth-best defender in the ACC. Williams received four votes for defensive player of the year, compared with 31 for Maryland linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, 17 for Boston College end Mathias Kiwanuka and 14 for Virginia Tech end Darryl Tapp."

I know, I know - the pick is done. Still trying to understand it...You sign a left DT in Weaver in FA, then draft a left DT first overall?

Then, after signing a LB in FA, they draft a LB in the second round, passing a top OT that could really have helped things on the offense?

Oh well...Go ahead and start the "you're not a true Texans fan" bashing...

When will folks realize that Weaver can't rush the passer and neither can Cowart? The Texans desperately needed a pass rusher and that's what they got. Neither RB or QB was a need.

I'm not going to say you're not a true texan. At least I think you're still a fan. The untrue texans are the ones quitting the team over ONE pick.

I think you have two bookend DE's in Weaver and Williams.

Remember Williams is a JUNIOR. He still can be coached up. There is a lot of technique for him to learn as well.

I think Williams is more of a pass rusher and run stopper than Weaver is who was more of a run stopper.

But every scout and team had Reggie Bush and Mario Williams as the top 2 players in the draft. Besides, we can second guess all we want, but the contract is signed and Williams is a Texan. I'm thinking he'll erase all our doubts sooner rather than later.

At least he drives a Ford F250 diesel truck. I can go for that.\\

And I'm guilty of being among those infuriated at first hearing this news, to the point of posting some harsh stuff over the last couple days. But I'm slowly coming around, I think. Will take some time to get used to. I sure hope the next two picks go well.

I like what I heard Mel Kiper say earlier today.

Something to the effect of "If Joe Montana came out this year, there would be a bunch of knocks on him."

There's knocks on every prospect. That's why they are called prospects. You never know about 'em until they prove it on the field.

There's no such thing as a bust until they're in the rear-view mirror.

I feel that's gonna be pretty common over the next couple weeks.

And damn, I'm a Chevy guy...there's my knock on him :)
