Players only meeting

DanielTx

Chosen one
Texans have had 2 players only meetings within a span of 1 week. There could possibly be a 3rd before the cowboys game.

2 ways to look at this.

1. Demeco has players bought into his coaching and they are setting the record straight with players who aren't bought in. Defense vs offense.

2. The locker room is against the offensive staff.

Either way, I think it's bad. The latest meeting was reportedly 2 hours long.

The coaches are suppose to get the most out of there players. Starting to sound like the entire team is against the offensive coaching staff. What could you possibly talk about for 2 hours? The team chemistry is trending down

Agreed. Players only meetings are rarely good for the coaching staff, hence player only meeting. For the long-term outlook though, these meetings sometimes are for the best of the overall team. I know the Ravens in 2012 had one when they were slipping up towards the end of the season and change was brought in (Cam Cameron fired, Caldwell hired/Bryant McKinnie put in as LT rather than a struggling Michael Oher) and they went on to win the Superbowl with great offensive success.

I don't see this as a bad thing. I think it is good they are taking time to meet and discuss the teams woes on their own time. Even if it is to discuss the offensive staff, it doesn't mean it's a bad thing. With Stroud I am sure it is more about accountability than anything. The collapse in the 2nd half last week is on everyone, players and coaches both share in that.

Hey you could be jumping to conclusions here Deadpool.
I mean who knows - maybe the team just wants to register an official complaint about the accoustics in their locker room as they can't make out the "lyrics" in their Rap music, or maybe
they are dissatisfyed with the array of vending machins offered in the team facilities ?

I heard the second meet was basically the leadership level of guys. I am cool with that. Get on the same page, don't have a lot of bitching, take a clear and concise message back to Meco and down to the position rooms. Cannot happen every week, but they know they are better than they are playing

Or maybe it isn’t much of anything.

Or maybe it isn’t much of anything.

This sounds exactly like every industry I have ever worked for

Best meetings- short one to one with someone you directly work with
usually good- meetings with the small group you work with
starting to suck- random meetings with people you barely know and/or work with
nearly always suck- large location wide meetings whether the big boss is there or not.

I honestly don't care if they are talking about their favorite episode of Gumby or if they are arguing over the great debate Addams Family vs Munsters.

As long as we NEVER have to see a game like the Jets or Lions ever.... EVER again.

Braid eachothers hair, paint your nails, put on a dress and play girl bunny and call yourself Bugs while someone dresses up like the Fudmeister.

Just fix it.

Joe Mixon assembled the latest players only meeting. Emphasized accountability from certain offensive members. Shared insight from his time on the Bengals a couple of years ago when they had a patch of bad games and overcame them to contend vs the 49ers in the playoffs. Attempted to call out shortcomings, while building up confidence. Fostered an open forum for all attending players to voice their concerns and gripes (and praises) and most of all, promises. Was a good meeting that accomplished Joe's goal.

Edit: I have little knowledge of 1st players meeting. Coaching was discussed, but not wholly as a negative, more as a request for total buy-in from everyone.

You were there?

Great points. Ravens had a talented team that year. Ray Lewis last year but yeah I can only imagine, Ray and a couple other leaders talking in the meeting and getting the team as a whole back on the same page. It makes me feel optimistic for the Texans. We don’t have a Ray Lewis but our players have heart and determination. I think there’s 2 ways how this story will unfold. Either the Texans will go on a hot streak or the fans will turn on Demeco.

I just find it hard to believe none of our guys spoke up to the coaching staff about certain players (Kenyon Green) during his time playing. Were they ignored? Is this coaching staff arrogant? Starting to seem like it… Only time will tell

JJ said on his Mcafee appearance there is always one player who has no business speaking who talks during a players only meeting. Who do you think that would be for the Texans?

I’d say it would be Kenyon Green telling the receivers they need to separate better and CJ needs to stop holding the ball longer than 1 second haha

Yeah man the Mixon signing was brilliant. A guy who was a key part getting the bengals to the superbowl. It makes sense hearing Mixon lead the meeting. We saw him highly upset the jets game and than Lions game. 2 weeks in a row showing frustration. He has high hopes for this team and thinks we’re special. It just makes you wonder.. have you ever saw Mixon upset during his bengals years? Even when they weren’t winning. When I say upset, showing frustration, not disappointment. I’ve never

Good one haha!

In all seriousness, I think the candidates would be Jimmi Ward and Dalton Schultz. I heard Schultz gathered the team leaders so they can have the 1st meeting. I say Schultz because while he has been playing ok as of late, he gives up on plays and has had multiple drops because he tries to 1 hand them. I mention Ward because he hasn’t been a leader on the field imo. He's always hurt and has injured 2 of our players already. The latest injury to our rookie who’s been playing elite and just came off a injury… was pretty stupid

I think we can bang on Ward for being injured and even missing some plays early on, but the dude is passionate and an absolute missile out there. Demeco tells the guys to show up and tackle with agression and intent. Ward hit Kamari because he made a business decision to avoid Sewell and was out of position, bad luck

If he’s not hurt he’s hurting one of our own.

Ward is like a cruise missile that lost its GPS. You know it’s heading somewhere and will destroy everything where it lands. The question is…where is it landing. He should not have been resigned

After Kenyon Green has a seat, the team captain Laremy Tunsil addresses the team:

“Men, we have to arrive early and stay late this week. Do the extra work and be mindful of the small details. We have to be locked in and not commit any pre-snap penalties boys!”

I heard it was more like “men, you are working way too hard. If you inspire to make millions of easy dollars like me…you have to follow my lead. I know a gas mask guy, and a dealer. Take the edge off, eat a bag of Doritos and watch Animal House. Do just enough to make the coaches think you care, even though you don’t. Make sure to get plenty of hangnails and a splinter or two so you get extra time off. Make sure to be active on Instagram and get plenty of followers. Last but not least…wait until you are old enough to get all these freebie days off. They call them vet days around here. Let’s huddle up, 1, 2, 3 freeeee”

You didn't object when he was... in fact, you gave your tacit approval

That was before he was yet again injured most of the time, and before he decided he was half football player and half kamikaze pilot on a suicide mission. In short..I was wrong. He needs an apple and a roadmap stat.

Why does he need a roadmap if you give him an Apple? Do iPhones not play well with Google? :kitten:

Why didn't Ward have these issues with the 49ers? He's always played this way and I dont remember him hurting other teammates an abnormal amount. I love the way Ward plays the game.

Lets see if he's healthy come playoff time. He definitely was brought in by Ryans and extended for a reason. I wouldn't expect any apples/roadmaps for Ward.

There's nothing wrong with your line of thinking that a gummie or two wouldn't cure.

I've been in many meetings in two different settings - the health industry and manufacturing. The treatment team meetings in the hospital are excellent. Every element involved in patient care is represented, and the meetings are short, to the point, and productive. Therapist-only team meetings at the methadone clinic were always a complete disaster. Cross functional team meetings in manufacturing, over my 25 years in that field meetings varied in productivity based on the maturity and talent of the staff. The most valuable meetings were the high-performance training exercises at Cirrus Aircraft. We reached a point in our projects where there could be disagreements between the members, and we all felt free to express our ideas. We didn't get offended whenever someone disagreed because we trusted one another. I'm not sure but I would suspect the Texans players lack trust in one another.

Some positional groups know the guy next to them will do their part but I don't think that feeling is mutual. The offensive line looks like they don't trust each other. They look like they're unable to help one another out consistently. Instead of encouraging, teaching, and assisting those on that line who lack the skillset to perform on their own, it's all man for themselves. And I think it's spread throughout the offense. We all know the offense by now should be humming right along.

I'm hoping these players-only meetings will yield some benefits. However, just like in manufacturing, the quality of the product will suffer if the leadership fails to offer adequate support. Ryans is the VP of Operations and over this year his Q3 and Q4 deliverables have been inadequate to keep up with the competition. He has to intervene. Reassign his underperforming directors, reduce their responsibilities, or replace them. The board of directors is getting restless.

Agreed with this.

However they have reassigned a under performer in Green and moved another under performer in Scruggs. The results while not great are better than what they were before the changes. Right now you've only got one guy who hasn't played much on the OL. Scruggs has been moved where he has to do less thinking and is an upgrade at LG physically. I guess you could say Patterson is a young guy too, but he's proven to be capable of making the OL calls and set protections.

Scruggs is better than Green in pass pro, but he's a liability in the run game

The Texans are 10x better with Ward patrolling back there. He’s played in 5 games this season. All five of those… we held teams to either an under 50% completion or under 200 yards. That includes the Minny beating we took. Darnold only threw for 170something.

You're messing up a good narrative.

If healthy come playoff time Ward will make a difference.
