Offensive tackle Chris Patrick said Friday he plans to skip his senior season at Nebraska and enter the NFL’s Supplemental Draft in July.

“I think I have a good chance to be signed and drafted,” said Patrick, who started 14 of the last 16 games at left tackle, including Nebraska’s Cotton Bowl loss to Auburn in January.

Asked why he didn’t petition in time for April’s regular NFL Draft, Patrick said he needed time to think the decision through. College underclassmen faced a Jan. 15 deadline to make themselves available for the regular April 28-29 draft.

“My timing could have been better, but I’m not worried about it,” he said.

If you pick a guy in the supplemental, what round pick do you lose the next season? third????

I believe you lose the same round as you choose the supplemental draft player in. Like take a guy in the fourth lose a fourth or take him in the first lose a first.

In the supplemental draft, a team is not required to use any picks. Instead, if a team wants a player in the supplemental draft, they submit a "bid" to the Commissioner with the round they would pick that player. If no other team places a bid on that player at an earlier spot, the team is awarded the player and has to give up an equivalent pick in the following year's draft. (For example, RB Tony Hollings was taken by the Houston Texans in the second round of the Supplemental Draft in 2003; thus, in the 2004 NFL Draft, the Texans forfeited a second-round pick.)
