Patrick Surtain hits the trade block

It comes as no surprise that Dolphins’ cornerback Patrick Surtain hits the trade market as speculated in recent months. It is not an easy decision to part ways with a Pro Bowl type cornerback who makes a lot of plays, but inflexibility with the salary cap looking ahead forced Miami’s hands.

Surtain is an excellent excellent cover guy with natural body control and is very smooth in transition. He displays great burst to recover downfield and make plays on the ball. Surtain also possesses tremendous ball skills and thus creates a lot of turnovers. Despite his average size, Surtain has been strong in press coverage and has been a sure tackler in run support. He also does a good job playing the slot.

The one concern when evaluating Surtain has been injuries. He has suffered a lot of leg injuries over the past few years and some question his conditioning habits. With Surtain turning 29 by the time training camps open this summer, some teams could be concerned about his effectiveness over the long-term.

But make no doubt about it, teams that need a lift in their secondary to reach the next level will be strongly considering Surtain.

The Kansas City Chiefs could be one of those teams. Surtain’s press skills and ability to create turnovers could be intriguing within Gunther Cunningham’s defense.

Cincinnati and Jacksonville could also be intriguing fits to take their defenses to another level. Another intriguing match could be the Dallas Cowboys if they look to make a big splash on the veteran market.

Could Houston be interested in Patrick Surtain? I know the Texans havs GREAT corners but Aaron Glenn is getting really old. 33 next year. Surtain would be GREAT in the good and young Texan's defense. Robinson or Glenn at NB you guys have the number one or two 3-4 defense in the league! :whoohoo:

Gardener has been disapointing in D.C being a 1st round pick in 2000 out of Clemson. The Redskins are said to be looking for a 3rd or 4th round pick.
 
no on Surtain, too much money for the Texans to take him, and would be getting paid to much to play a nickel, Faggins is cheaper and is a pretty good in the nickel formations, we should just focus on resigning him... and he wouldnt push Glenn or DROB out of a starting spot, both are better CB, and Glenn will have a couple more solid years as a starter, and if he doesnt retire after 2 years, he may serve as a valuable nickel
 
if we are looking at a corner to eventually replace gleen i say we pick one up in the draft, not this year but i'd say next, cause glenn still has 2 or 3 years left in him.
 
In 2003, I would have said Glenn was better than Surtain, but I really noticed that Glenn had a pretty sharp fall off last year. He was better than the average run of the mill corner, but nowhere near pro-bowl level. Surtain would be a major upgrade at this point in their respective careers. The questions are for how much, and for how long. Surtain may find himself in Glenn's shoes in the next 3-5 years. We need to be careful about long term contracts for guys like Surtain that rely so much on speed and quickness.
 
Sutain is not worth it, there is no point, Glenn is still to good to play NB, and DROB definatly wont... so its pointless to pay 3 or more million or however much he will want a year to have him sit on the bench and play maybe a bit more than a third of the plays in the game, not worth it... and if the Texans were ignorant enough to, by the time Glenn retired and Surtain became a starter, he would be around 31, and in the same position we are in now with glenn... i agree with TexansTrueFan, on next year, but maybe in the later rounds we look around at a CB this year, but not with the first 4 rounds, most likely next year
 
How can someone be too good to play a position? If he fits within the budget, then go get him. I think he would supplant Glenn as the starter. Glenn lived on his reputation last year. He was a good corner, but not the Glenn of 2002 or even 2003, not anything special. Robinson was our best corner imo. We need three really good corners. Look at Miami for years with three very good corners. We play Indy twice a year, and you want Faggins to play nickel? In addition, moving Glenn to nickel provides better overall depth, and may even extend his career. :howdy:
 
so you would rather go around and spend pointless money on a guy we dont need, and not go spend that money is other places like the OL or DE or whatever else the Texans need to address... as of last year, Glenn was heads and shoulders above Surtain, if anyone is playing on their name alone it was Surtain... and Glenn had a better year than last year, look it up... so did Faggins, and he did not play as many snaps
 
I don't look at stats. I look at the play on the field. Obvisouely, I saw more of Glenn than Surtain. Stats are not the best barometer to measure a corner. I would bet that Faggins had better stats than Champ Bailey too, but I don't think you have to guess which I would rather have. Remember, I said IF he fits within all the budget constraints, and still allows us to upgrade other areas. But, it's just silly to suggest that having three good corners is not worth exploring.
 
no champs numbers were better overall, and glenn is one of the biggest leaders for the Texans D, he needs to be out there, and there is no IF he fits, he wouldnt, he would take up almost what maybe 3 to 4 mil a year... he isnt worth paying that much for... and when you find me a better measuring tool that works more often then comparing stats let me know... but glenn is the consumate pro, surtain couldnt hold glenn's jock strap

There probably isn't a position that stats less well indicate performance than CB and it real simple why--do your job well enough and you don't get any. Blanket your guy and the ball gets thrown somewhere esle so no INT, no pass defensed and no tackle. Different stats are needed to judge CB's--% of passes thrown to man covered by the CB, % of those passes completed, % of passes thrown that are deflected, % of passes thrown that are INT's.
 
If there is one free agent I would love to see us get, it is Walter Jones. Carr will never feel safe in the pocket until we have a reliable LT.
