"Bill Parcells will be back to coach the Cowboys. The Cowboys issued a news release Friday afternoon to announce that he has agreed to a new contract that will ensure that he will be under contract to coach the team through 2007

Here's a coach regarded as one of the NFLs greats by many who basically
is making no progress with the Cowboys over a 3 yeaqr period. Just goes to
show how tough it is to succeed in the NFL.

Parcells made a huge stride ecoming off a 6-10 season.. Our defense got years younger, they converted to a 3-4 and we got more wins. They'll only improve.. Shore up the offensive line, maybe sign a fresh WR, and this team will be a contender for the super bowl. Last off-season it was all about the defense (top 10 in league now, improved from #29 last year) This year will be offense.

Dallas was THIS close to playoffs after 6-10. Last second loss to Seattle, Washington, Raiders, Denver, Giants.. Dallas wins one of these and their in the playoffs.

Oh BTW, why dont you take a look at the Cowboy's drafts before Parcells:

Here's a trivia question for you. Without looking this up, who was our first draft pick of the 2000 draft?

I was just throwing away my old DC desk calendar and that was one of the questions I ran across. I honestly couldn't remember. I guessed QC. I was wrong.

It was Dwayne Goodrich.

Yeah. Stellar pick.

In fact, lets journey back to the the time before Parcells and see what kind of talent we were acquiring before he got here.

Of the 2000 draft, not a single player is still in the league. Not a one.

Dwayne Goodrich - out of league.
Kareem Larrimore - ditto
Michael Wiley - ditto
Mario Edwards - ditto
Orantes Grant - ditto

Now lets check out 2001. One player out of NINE is still in the league.

Quincy Carter - Out of league
Tony Dixon - ditto (basically)
Willie Blade - ditto
Markus Steele - ditto
Matt Lehr - Atlanta
Daleroy Stewart - Out of League
Colston Weatherington - ditto
John Nix - ditto
Char-ron Dorsey - ditto

And lets not stop there, remember that great draft in 2002?
It turns out we were wrong. Way wrong. Check it out:

Roy Williams - Pro Bowler only decent pick out of those 3 years.
Andre Gurode - terrible backup
Antonio Bryant - Cleveland
Derek Ross - Out of league
Jamar Martin - ditto
Pete Hunter - backup in Cleveland
Tyson Walter - Backup in Houston (worst OL in league)>>
Deveren Johnson - Out of league
Bob Slowikowski - Out of league.

That's three years and we netted a single player. One player out of TWENTY-THREE.

That was life before Parcells. It's a life I dont want.

No progress?

To be honest I was sort of secretly hoping Bill would hang it up or go elsewhere. I can't put my finger on it but something about him bugs me. I do think he's a great coach and all that but I was hoping the Cowboys would go with a younger guy. They faded miserably down the stretch after a very nice start and Bill has to be held accountable for some of that.

One thing for sure. They need to spend money on a kicker. Why they don't and haven't I do not know. It cost them games this year and when you get to the end of the year and you're out of the playoffs by one game well there you go! Bad kicking! Pony up Jerry..you can afford it.

Oh yea. The offensive line was horrid too. Whether it was Flozell getting hurt or whatever they stunk!

But they did improve this year, no doubt about that.

That's what I'm talking about, Tuna didn't get it done when the chips were
down.
But more to the point of my thread, the teams record may have improved
year over year, but the team has actually moved backwards over his tenure with the Cowboys. Not what you'd expect from a "great" coach. As I recall, they were in the playoffs year before last (Parsells first year), but missed this year. So over the whole 3 years, that real regression.
I dunno....sometimes I really wonder if there's that much difference between coaches ? Just a few years ago, the Jags fired Coughlin because their record
dropped. But the same guy in just his second year with the Giants has a first week bye for the Giants in the playoffs. Maybe teams go in cycles of boom and bust because of where they pick in the Draft and whoever the HC is
actually becomes irrelavant.

Well we're just have to agree to disagree. I don't think they've regressed but rather progressed. The record is testimony to that. Bill is head and shoulders improvement over Coach Campo. I don't think they're regressed at all. If they'd spend money to get a decent kicker they would have won those games they lost and would have been in the playoffs.

But to Bill's credit he has said that he didn't do such a great job at times last year and he's prepared to do better. Which he should.
