Parcells apologizes for inappropriate reference

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Bill Parcells apologized Monday for calling the surprise plays used in practice "Jap plays", saying the remark was inappropriate.

The Dallas Cowboys coach was talking to reporters at the team's minicamp about how his quarterbacks coach and defensive coordinator try to outdo each other when he made the comment, an apparent reference to Japan's 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

You've got to keep an eye on those two, because they're going to try to get the upper hand,'' Parcells said about Sean Payton and Mike Zimmer. Mike wants the defense to do well, and Sean, he's going to have a few ... no disrespect for the Orientals, but what we call Jap plays. OK, surprise things.''

Akira Kuboshima, the editor of Japan's American Football Magazine who was in the room, said he wasn't offended but believed some people would be. He also said he was surprised more by the reaction of other reporters than the comment. There is a lot of chance for someone to feel offended,'' Kuboshima said. To me, it was no big deal.''

Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple apologized on behalf of the organization, and Parcells later issued a statement. I made a very inappropriate reference, and although I prefaced it with the remark, 'no disrespect to anyone intended,' it was still uncalled for and inconsiderate,'' Parcells said in the statement. For that I apologize to anyone who may have been offended.''

The remark was only part of Parcells' 45-minute session with reporters, in which he also talked about the team's quarterback competition and some of the new players. After three straight 5-11 seasons, the Cowboys went 10-6 and reached the playoffs in their first year under Parcells. Still, he expects better in 2004. That doesn't mean we'll win more games,'' Parcells said. That just means I think from head to toe that we have a chance to be better.''

Wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, who had two of his Pro Bowl seasons for Parcells while with the New York Jets, came to Dallas in a trade with Tampa Bay. Vinny Testaverde was reunited with his old coach last week, leaving the Jets as a free agent. The 40-year-old quarterback will compete for the starting job with incumbent Quincy Carter and serve as a mentor to Drew Henson, who was added this spring after he quit professional baseball.

These guys that were here last year, they've already bought into it. From that alone, we'll be a better team,'' running back Richie Anderson said. We already know what to expect. He's not going to allow certain things to happen or go on.''

I agree the remark was inappropriate and insensitive.

The right thing to do was apologize.

I don't know if he can be fined but perhaps they might do so.

Anyway he strikes me as a smart guy and I don't imagine he'll do it again.

I don't think there is any point in fining him, I'm not condoning what he did but people need to quit HUNTING for things to offend them. It seems like every time something that isnt 100% politically correct is said that even REMOTELY might offend someone in some conveivable way, everyone gets upset and demands an apology etc. Im getting sick of all this overdone political correctness.

(And to those that will read into this too much, I agree there is racism in the world and there is no place for it in todays society but a single misconstrued comment should not take up more airtime of headline news than terrorist bombings. No I dont have an example but you get my point.)

All most all the time you have to preface something by saying "No offense to..." you're about about to say sometyhing offensive, you big-juggged ***** Cowboy. "No offense to big-judded *****s".

White dont want people calling their race Slave owners, just like the japs dont want people calling theirs sneaky. Refering to the pearl harbor attack. I dont think it is that big of a deal, but he should have just said sneak plays, and not "jap plays." Now I am all for freedom of speech, but know that your words come with responsibility, and you will be held accountable for them when you are in high profile like Bill fish man.

i think he did it to bring more atinion to the cows. Bill has always a great couch and am sorry he has to couch such a bad team

Sorry Sensei, but just because you served our country (I do appreciate it though) that doesn't exclude ANYONE from saying WHATEVER they want. That's like someone without children not being able to say what best for kids. it was a stupid thing to say, but It's not something to he should spend the rest of the week apologizing for.

Coach Parcells has never been much for the media until he became a member himself.

I consider the remark insensitive and he did the right thing by apologizing.

We all say things we wish we hadn't. I'm sure he feels that way today.

Agree. I think we've swung too far on the p.c. scale. I think if wouldn't have prefaced it with "no offense to..." then it may not even have been caught. Well, maybe the hyped-up media still would've run with it.

So, no offense to the white people, but some crackas need to get a clue. (Yes, of the caucasian race myself.) If you can't laugh things like that off - you're wound up too tight.

Near Beaumont towards Fannett, there is a road named "Jap Road". Its been named that for decades. It was named for a Japanese rice farmer who lived there. No one ever gave it a second thought until a couple of years ago when someone drove through and was "offended"

Now the ACLU and other civil rights groups are involved. As of this date, it is still called Jap Road.

completely agree.

I don't think you can equate terms like "cracker" or "honky" to the disparaging remarks other ethnic groups are associated with. If you're "white", are you really offended if someone calls you a cracker? No, you laugh it off. It's not even remotely the same. Until you walk in someone else's shoes, it's not your call to tell someone what they should or shouldn't be offended by.

Regarding Parcell's, this is just another reminder that he comes out of the Bobby Knight School for Blowhards & Blockheads.

Your opinion and entitled to it, Lucky. However, I don't think the caucasian race came up with cracker or honkey as a slang for themselves.

I think it just depends on the person, how strong they are in ther own skin and can rise above the piddy issues if derogatory comments can roll off them.

I am offended by the Jimmy Johnson Blvd in PA. Think they will rename it too? :D :D
