Pace or Barron

DBLR1

Practice Squad
What do you guys think? You would give up less if we draft Barron but he isn't proven and we all know about Pace's dominance.

I'd take Pace because he is proven, would make an immediate impact, is in his prime, and just has better overall talent than Barron...

The only downside to getting Pace would be his contract, which would make managing the cap much more difficult...

This isnt even close. Barron while has promise.... is still not proven, nor is he touted as a TIP TOP Tackle prospect. This years Tackle draft is weak overall.

Barron would be worse than Wand...and take even more time to groom for effectiveness. Wand is closer to beaing ready...and we all know how HUGE of an upgrade Pace would be immediately over him.

I doubt we even draft an OL with our first pick anyway.

I would take Pace, but not for 2 first round picks. He would be worth his contract. But I would have no problem taking Barron in the first, and seeing how he turns out. I think that Barron is a good value at #13. He had a great pro-day, and just needs to gain some strength and bulk like every rookie lineman (0ffensive and defensive lineman).

I also think Barron will be better come August, than Wand.

My thoughts exactly!!!

There is ZERO chance of us giving up 2 first rounders.

And I guess we disagree on Barron over Wand. Even the big bad dominant Gallery from last year did not come in as a rookie and play really that good at all.

Yeah you got a point about Gallery, I was all on his nuts. He had a good year but he isn't Pace by any means. I want Pace but you are right, no way we give up 2 first rounders. I would like to see us do the trade of: 13th pick, one of our 3rds, Sharper or maybe a 2nd next year. Then draft Baas if he is there and be done with it.

I don't completely agree with this statement...

Regardless of if we draft Barron or not, I believe that Wand will be the starting LT going into the season opener unless Barron completely blows everyone away during training camp and the preseason. Barron is even less of a proven than Wand is, so if I'm David Carr, I'd want Wand covering my blindside with a year's experience instead of a rookie who needs to add bulk...

FWIW, We Rams Fans were exploring all kinds of draft scenarios IF we traded Pace to y'all. There seems to be a consensus that Alex Barron's upper body strength is a huge concern. Most of us don't think he'll immediately start for most NFL Teams. Personally, I'd pick Khalif Barnes or Jammal Brown.

Khalif Barnes

Official Bio College: Washington Height: 6-53/4
Position: Offensive Tackle Weight: 305
Class: Senior 40-Yard: 4.93
SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths: Amazing athletic ability for the position and a man his size...Shows great footwork...Very quick and agile...Has long arms...Very experienced and a team leader...Still possesses a lot of upside.
Weaknesses: Not a dominator in the running game...Plays too high at times...Can still get bigger and stronger...Not very powerful at the point of attack.
Notes: Former defensive tackle who will definately be a workout warrior...You can bet some team will take a chance on someone with this guys physical tools and potential early in the draft.

Jammal Brown

Official Bio College: Oklahoma Height: 6-57/8
Position: Offensive Tackle Weight: 316
Class: Senior 40-Yard: 5.06
SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths: Is very athletic...Has long arms...Agile with quick feet and moves well...Does an excellent job in pass protection...Has a lot of experience...May be able to play left tackle in the pros...Can still improve.
Weaknesses: Not as big or strong as you would like...Not a dominator in the running game...Not all that tough or physical...Lacks a killer instinct and doesn't finish his blocks...Needs to show a better work ethic.
Notes: Won the Outland Trophy as a senior...The best player on one of the best offensive lines in the nation...May be the best all around tackle in the draft but doesn't have the upside that Alex Barron does...Could come off the board early with tackle being such an in-demand position.

Alex Barron

Official Bio College: Florida St. Height: 6-71/2
Position: Offensive Tackle Weight: 320
Class: Senior 40-Yard: 5.10
SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths: Tremendous athleticism...Has long arms...Excellent in pass protection...Very quick feet and good balance...A natural left tackle...Good size...Still has a lot of upside and potential.
Weaknesses: May not have that killer instinct and doesn't always finish his blocks...Battled some injuries early in his career...Doesn't have a lot of experience and is still raw...Has to work on mastering the nuances of the position.
Notes: Widely regarded as the top senior offensive lineman available...Not in the same class as Tony Boselli, Jon Ogden or Orlando Pace but may be just a notch below...The top offensive tackle in the Draft and should be one of the elite players available.

None of the big 3 OT prospects are elite, by any stretch of the imagination...

Barnes is athletic, but isn't above average at either pass-blocking or run-blocking...

Brown is weak and is only decent at pass-blocking and run-blocking...

Barron is weak, but is good at pass-protection and average at run-blocking...

There is no can't miss guy, but if I had to rank them, they'd be Barron, Barnes, Brown...

Barnes over Brown due to upside and athleticism...

The funny thing is that if there was a "cant miss guy" he would go top 10, maybe top 5.

Everyone acts like Barron is horrible because hes not Robert Gallery. But guess what? If he was as good or better, he wouldnt be there at 13. Plain and simple. Yall want Pace2, but yall also want him to last until 13? c'mon.

Ole Miss prospect Marcus Johnson is going to go as high or higher than these guys because he has Chester Pitts like versatility and projects to Tackle in the NFL, and he will not be a liability vs the run like Barron is absolutely going to be. Johnson can play Guard while he grooms but there is no way that Barron could…but I think Johnson projects more to RT than LT.

I don't think the Texans will draft ol in the first round anyway. There is no "sure thing" and we still have defensive holes to fill. I would like to see us get Baas in the 2nd round even if we had to move up a little to get him although it wouldn't suprise me to see CC do the exact same thing as last year and draft a cb in the 1st and move up and take a "tweener" like Pollack after that.

Again I have to point out that if there was a "sure thing" he wouldnt last until 13. The only way you will get a stud LT this late in round 1, is in a draft when there are 2-3 of them in one draft.

Example.

2004
Round 1 Pick 2 Robert Gallery T Iowa
Round 1 Pick 16 Shawn Andrews T Arkansas
Round 1 Pick 19 Vernon Carey T Miami

1997
Round 1 Pick 1 Orlando Pace T Ohio State
Round 1 Pick 6 Walter Jones T Florida State
Round 1 Pick 19 Tarik Glenn T California

Otherwise you only have the one, or two cant miss guy(s). And they dont last till 13.

2003
Round 1 Pick 8 Jordan Gross T Utah

2002
Round 1 Pick 4 Mike Williams T Texas
Round 1 Pick 7 Bryant McKinnie T Miami

I'm starting to warm to idea of drafting a LT with the first pick, we might be able to spend the money we save on a FA WR like Plax.

The one advantage Barron has to Pace, other than youth, is that he'll be signed for much less money than Pace would...We'd likely be able to lock up Barron for 5 years 8-9 million...

The way I see a first round pick is like this, the player has to be able to start from day one. Right now it seems like we have more pressing needs than a LT. And since the three LTs in this draft aren't going to be mistaken for Jon Ogden or Anthony Munoz, I think the need for a pass rush is a little more of a pressing need. I mean think about it, last year was Wands "rookie" year and he did better than Pitts did his rookie year.

Anytime your team thinks about using Todd Wade at LT, your team is in need of left tackle help.

Something needs to be done. Thats why they went hard core for Pace.
