HOUSTON TEXANS – BELOW AVERAGE
The Texans’ offensive line has been in flux for the six years of the franchise. Left tackle has been a nightmare and Houston projects Duane Brown will end the bleeding. Brown is a converted tight end who moved to tackle. He has experience at both the right and left tackle spots. On the surface, this pick looked like a monumental reach, but after further review, Brown is an ascending player who has the physical skill set to excel at the position. Antwaun Molden is an athletically gifted corner that needs developmental time. Steve Slaton was a touchdown machine as a college running back and projects as a third down back that excels in space. Xavier Adibi adds depth to a logjam at linebacker, but is versatile enough to compete at all spots. Frank Okam had to convince the Texans he wanted football more than law school. He’s a huge athletic presence as a defensive tackle, but may project to the offensive line. Dominique Barber is an instinctive safety that is quick to read and react. Alex Brink is an accurate and productive quarterback that will be competing for the third spot.

The only thing I can say is "Time will tell".

Kubes & Smith haven't let us down yet and I don't think they did this year either. I'll also admit, I'm warming up to the Duane Brown pick. Originally, I thought he was a little bit of a reach.
 
As the Texans fill more spots, it gets harder to have first-team potential on every pick. So you could look at this year's draft picks and wonder how much of an impact they'll actually have on the team. Me, I say you get what you need and forget what the pundits think. It was a damn fine draft because they finally went high for a left tackle. They made some wheeling and dealing to grab a few extra guys, too, including Steve Slaton. Only time will tell, but overall this is my second-favorite draft since Kubiak started...my favorite being the 2006 draft.
 
actually just ran across this on OURLADS website (trying to ask when the 2008 review would be mailed). 76Texan is right about how could they rate the Texans below average after all the positives? I would say they had a brain fart :um:

for starters you have to include Schaub because they didn't have their 2nd rd. choice that was traded to Atlanta to aquire him. second he needed protection which was addressed with 1st rd. pick LT Duane Brown (ascending player), then for a 6th rd. pick the new starting Center already familar with ZBS. A 7th rd. pick who adds depth @ QB to develop. They had Okam as a 4th/5th round pick so that seems in line. I guess they don't feel that high on Steve Slayton (undersized/durability) 4th/5th rounder but you must judge him on how well he fits the system here, I think his skill set, speed/receiving out of the backfiled plus quick burst to hit the hole will make him a playmaker. Not to mention he was selected using a pick the Texans did not have prior to the beginning of this draft. Molden went right where is was projected & from the combine on he was also an ascending player so its lucky for the Texans he was still on the board. Xavier Adibi they had projected as a second /third round pick. last but not least recently signed Dominque Barber (6th rd.) is going to make the 53 man roster, will make a name for himself on special teams & when needed will be ready to help in the secondary.

it's nice to think that we're deep enough to draft players that we intend to develop ( molden, brink, barber), and to bring in guys like slaton to be a 3rd down back. this draft had no home runs because we don't have as many holes, long term it could work out nicely
 
received. very professional publication, but I'm going to have to defend the Texans picks & take them to task.

What a load. How many draft reviews have mentioned Okam & law school or Okam & moving to the o-line? Brownie points to these draft gurus for including both of these bogosities in the same writeup.

Okam dropped in the draft because he was too fat. He wasn't a good fit for a lot of teams. Frank was a good fit for the Texans. And if Ourlads knew jack about the team, they would realize it's a good pick.

What I'd really like to see is Ourlad's review of the Texans 2006 draft. Anyone have that?
 
I'm probably not going to re-subscribe after 3 years of being a satisfied customer this past drafts reveiw of the Texans is so blatently bad I just can no longer support their efforts.

How is Duane Brown doing now?

how about first pre-season game guys........

Antwaun Molden ideally needs time to develop, but with loss of Dunta Robinson, will be force fed the defense. This is where he may struggle - the mental side of the game.

yeah he's getting schooled but he is on a fast track & reason why they paid Jaqques Reeves to come in as the starter.......

IF Ahman Green & free agent Chris Brown can stay healthy, the running game may stay on track.

what running game? & no they can't stay healthy, anybody who buys into that crap is smoking something.

A third down back with speed & big play ability gives Steve Slayton a shot for playing time.

the extra weight he gained slowed him down in 2007

regarding Frank Okam,
his personality is more geared to the offensive line, so if he's a bust on defense he will get a look @ OG.

wow, thats all I can say, wow

Barber is coming along & competing for a roster spot & Brink is destined to be on the practice squad but if he is may be called upon sooner rather than later if not by the Texans another NFL team. Nice BELOW AVERAGE GRADE you guys get a QUESTIONABLE grade how do you like them apples :spit:
 
Just goes to show you how pointless draft grades are before the players have played an NFL down.

A guy was asking me what my Texans draft grade was before the Broncos game, he said, "I think its a D personally."

I said, "Why? We traded down and got 2 extra picks, plus a day 1 starting LT. How do you give that a D when they've yet to play a down?"

He was speechless :headhurts:

love the clueless to a point expect when they making a living doing just that which makes OURLADS read on the subject hard to swallow. when it first came out on the net (posted above) I was speechless. here is a trusted publication with more than adequate resources to form an educated opinion, which should be much more informed than your average NFL fans, like us (or maybe we're not average?).

If I remember McClain came out right after the draft & gave the Texans a B- fine no problem thats in the ballpark
LT Duane Brown was the best on the board at his position, based on what the Texans are doing with Alex Gibbs running game. CB Antwaun Molden and RB Steve Slayton should contribute as rookies. The jury is out on the rest, as far as immediate playing time. The Texans didn't get an edge rusher.

Now well into pre-season both Brown & Slayton are ahead of schedule. Ratings also seem to forget Matt Schaub in the equation, established as the Texans starting QB. Molden is going to take some time but looks everybit the part, as it stands right now I really like what the Texans did to aquire the extra 3rd rd. pick (Slayton) & who they selected when they did. there is also quite a few around here who think Greenwood needs upgraded & thats where Adibi comes in. yes instead we could have targeted a RDE but considering who was available along with needs Adibi was the best player standing. same thing can be said for Frank Okam in the 5th rd. who at least provides much needed depth on the interior line. now the 6th rd. is probably one to question, although I really like Barber & feel he is a legit NFL prospect the Texans seem stacked @ the safety position. 7th rd. pick Alex Brink looks more like @ least a quality back-up than some top overall picks @ the same position :drive:

exactley, which just proves how much this draft improved the Texans top to bottom. starting LT & Center, wow thats two offensive line positions. RB, thank you sir can I have another. A CB & Safety thats two for the secondary plus a D-linemen & LB. the remainder of the price tag for emerging starting QB sensation Matt Schaub. overall balanced, prudent upgrades all around :)
 
It seems the only way to get a B is if you drafted 7 projected future all pros. Then it still might be a B- if they dont like your team.
