OptimisticTexan Mock Draft 1

OptimisticTexan

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
First, it wouldn't be a Mock Draft from me if I didn't include at least one trade, that I hope would be reasonable. I've got a feeling that based on the season's rebound, the Texans will find themselves somewhere beyond P24.

I've got a feeling that the hottest prospects at CB or OT will be gone by the time the team picks. There will be some decent targets that can fill needs but why not trade further back in RD1 or into early RD2 and pick-up an additional RD3 with the move? I think it could be very plausible that such a move could be executed and who knows, Gaine might like the idea of adding a pick or two to this draft. So, I'm going to progress with Gaine making at least one solid trade.

2019 Mock Draft 1

RD1- (T) Trayvon Mullen / CB / Clemson / 6-1 @ 190 lbs / Projects 4.4 - 40 / Has the size and speed to play the position at the next level. He could be a shutdown type of Corner but time in the Pre Season will better determine this projection.

RD2- (T-OAK) Mitch Hyatt / LT / Clemson / 6-5 @ 305 lbs / 4 Year Senior Starter at LT, 2 with Watson who definitely answers the team's need in a LT of the future. I also like the fact that he has a history in protecting Watson's blindside and doing it against some respectable talent that currently resides in the NFL.

RD2- Dalton Risner / OC - OG / Kansas State / 6-4 @ 308 lbs / 4 Year Senior Starter that I see working best on the inside. If Martin isn't the answer, I'd be happy having Risner in the back pocket.

RD3- Karan Higdon / RB / Michigan / 5-9 @ 190 lbs / Projects 4.4 to 4.5 - 40 / He's a smallish RB but he's having a really good season against some really solid teams. I like him the more I read up on him. He could pair nicely with Foreman.

RD3- (T) Riley Ridley / WR / Georgia / 6-2 @ 200 lbs / Projects 4.3 to 4.4 - 40 / I'd certainly love to see him still on the board come RD3 but if he hits 4.3 at the Combine, it could be a long shot. Georgia's running game usually negates massive season's from their receivers but man, these guys can be very good at the next level. He's got a stupid catch radius to go with his speed. Could be a major steal if he's still on the board....maybe even the steal of this draft.

RD4- Traded to Denver for: WR, Demaryius Thomas

RD5- Max Scharping / RT / Northern Illinois / 6-6 @ 320 lbs / 3 Year Senior Starter who some see as an NFL OG but I think he has the talent to play RT especially if Lamm current play could buy him a season or two of growth time. Strong in the run game.

RD6- Derrick Baity, Jr / CB / Kentucky / 6-2 @ 186 lbs / Projects 4.4 to 4.5 - 40 / I like his size and speed first and foremost. While he's competing or getting some rotational time at CB, I like what he could bring to the ST unit.

RD7- Anthony Sherril / SS / Missouri / 5-11 @ 204 lbs / Projects 4.4 - 40 / I like his size and speed first and foremost. While he's competing or getting some rotational time at SS, I like what he could bring to the ST unit.

I really like the idea of picking a couple of athletes with decent speed with upside projection. Getting solid ST production from RD6 and RD7 players could make this Mock a really solid and deep draft.

Feel free to jump in and share your thoughts.

good mock, only thing I would change and Idk where is to draft at least 1 d lineman. D line is like O line to me where you need to at the very least take 1 per draft, games are won and lost in the trenches so that applies to both sides to me. Especially since we have a few DL coming up for free agency. But solid mock man, thank you for your work

Anyone know about the OT position via free agency? Unless a rookie can lock it down, we can't risk having a rookie protect Watson's blindside until we know he's ready.

Agreed, on the mock, though. DB and OL are the top priorities, right now.

Good job - I love thise first three especially.
Like Shiskabob said, D line will probably get some attention up high and Texans wisely rarely pass up on a good pass rusher.

Man, that's an ugly plate of food. LT's have become one of the gold standards in regards to position players.

Sorry man, I had no idea the list was this ducking long. Most of it is worthless but at least folks can see what's out there.
Good job OpTex, you did your homework and put in the time on that area.
You know even though OT looks to be the most compelling single position for the Texans in the Daft & FA next year, I still don't think GM Gaine will necessarily use our first round pick on it because I suspect he's too shrewd to ignore the PBA philosophy.

I would be very happy if we landed both Hyatt and Risner in the 2nd round. They are my favorite OL prospects in this class. I wouldn't count Risner out of possibly starting at RT. Both will be hammered by experts about lack of length and average athleticism.

Give me either Donovan Smith or Trent Brown off of that list and trade up for Greg Little. That's called investing in the OL.

Then go out and get one of the FA/Trade CB's that come on the market every yr and this team is a SB contender. (They have the cap space.)

Depends on how much he values Watson's health.

Trading up for your LT of the future seems like a smart move to me. Sign a vet LT like Smith and groom the rookie at RT. I know this isn't going to happen but it should be a consideration.

Bull, you're just on a tirade. Until you know where we pick, who leaves early, the combine, etc you can't possibly declare they have to trade up if they care.

We traded DOWN for Duane Brown.

I'm not on a tirade.

The Texans are going to pick in the 18-22 range most likely. The 2 OT's I like the most (Williams/Little, I've watched alot of their games last yr and this yr.) will be long gone by the time 18-22 rolls around.

But hey if you want to call that, me having a tirade go right ahead. I call it investing in Watson's health. Care to add which OT's that you think can start as rookies at LT that will be available at 18-22 if you dont want to trade up? I've got a couple of guys I like that should be available in the 18-22 range that I like. (West Va. LT Yodny Cajuste and Mike Leach's LT at Wash St. Dillard. You should check them out and let me know what you think of them.

Saying it 52 times by midseason is a tirade.
I'm trying to stimulate draft discussion.

Thx for throwing another turd in the punch bowl.

Tell you what take a hr and watch Williams (Alabama) Little (Ole Miss) Cajuste (West Va) Dillard (Wash St) and get back to me. Or you can just be an A-Hole and make a post like the one you posted above. We both know which direction you're going to take. The one that comes most natural for you.

Hard to get into draft mode in early November with the Texans in first place by 2 games

Hard to get into draft mode in early November with the Texans in first place by 2 games
I get that, I just like throwing some names of guys I've seen that I like so if anybody is watching college football keep an eye on them and tell me what you think. If you see somebody else you like let me know and I will check them out.

If you dont watch college football (I prefer college to the pros) then no big deal.

I like college football and enjoy your info. It's hard to get really serious about it at this point though

This isn't the serious time of yr for scouting.

But noticing guys and keeping up with them is what I do. I want to know if I saw their best game and how they performed over the entire season. I usually get sick during the holidays and watch a bunch of bowl games.

I did the same thing....OT and CB are pretty much on equal footing and the BPA at those two positions won out in my rationale....the athlete from Clemson, CB Trayvon Mullen was the clear top pick. He fills a big need as well.

Question for you draftniks, now that the website draft breakdown is shut down, is there another good source to fine a collection of film on these prospects or am I left having to google everyone and hoping to find decent footage?

I think Dalton Risner will go in the 1st Rd. I like him though.

I’d prefer to get a tackle with our 1st. I think we might have a chance to get any of the following: D. Risner, D. Edwards, or Y. Cajuste. I’d also go after Kaleb McGary OT on day 2.

If I had to choose, I’d go OT Rd 1, CB Rd 2, OG Rd 2, and then either RB/OLB/WR Rd 3.

I think Edwards will be taken inside 15 picks. I like Cajuste but his size in the NFL could move him inside for the best results. Risner and Hyatt are my first choices and if I get them both in RD1 and/or in RD2, I'm happy with this. Funny you mentioned McGary, I really like him and would definitely consider him if Hyatt is off the board.
