Offensive Predictability

After watching Carr get sacked over and over against the Bears, Jaguars and Browns to end the season I started thinking about how he always rolls out to his right. Even though we won 2 of those games the Texans O got stuck inside their own 15 yard line continously with no plays to call to get them out.

Keeping on this thought I remember how last year analysts rated the Texans Free Agency and how the overall opinion was we paid Todd Wade Left Tackle money to be our Right Tackle.

Interesting for a QB that seems to like to rollout to the right. On one level it looks like a good move if Carr's going to roll right, but on the other hand it really hurt our offensive scheming because we were already predictable. I think Defensive coaches picked up on Carr's rolling right preference and took advantage.

My question is who is to blame: Capers, Casserly or Palmer? What do you think?

Most right handed QB's roll out to their right most of the time.

very true

when rolling the opposite direction (left) he would either have to ATTEMPT to throw or abandon the pass and run (which i wouldnt mind seeing more on naked bootlegs though).

when you have guys chasing you and you are rolling left, you have to turn your body and its really difficult compared to rolling on the side you normally throw. try it out with your buddies and check out how hard it is.

David Carr's predictabiltiy once flushed out of the pocket is almost always wide right, which foils the blocking engaged by the right tackle (Wade) because the DT just releases in pursuit & unless Wade holds or takes down (penalty) he has a free run, hence Carr was seen often throwing as he ran out of bounds or just eating the loss. the pocket has to be maintained by his lineman & David has to develop more confidence & chemistry with his lineman by standing in the pocket and exacuting the designed play. Once flushed we're screwed unless he scrambles down the middle of the field.

This is why the Texans must address the middle of the offensive line LG, C, RG. Start with McKinney (3,850,000) at center & Wiegert (3,350,000) RG relaese them & upgrade via free agency and the draft. the tackles are set with Wand & Wade while Pitts is still young and affordable (780,000).

Cappers & Palmer can only try to develop and utilize the talent given, three years and they still suck, I think the writing is on the wall, its gotta be Casserly's job to address the offensive line, provide Cappers the tools for Palmer to exacute and David Carr to flourish in. A little long winded but I hope that helps.

I think that Wade was one of the few bright spots on our O-line this year. He IMO protected Carr the best out of any OL that we have, it is just that Carr was alot of times forced to roll right because of preasure coming from the middle of the line.
