OB's mock v.1

Given this draft has terrific depth and that fact the we have some significant holes due to injury and FA, I'm guessing we re-sign Quin, lose Barwin and kick Reed inside which I think is a good move. Given that, I propose the following:

Round 1

Trade down with either Buff, NYJ or AZ. Im hoping that one of these teams bypass a QB in rd 1 and are willing to jump to 27 to grab the QB they want. They are numerous teams at the top of the 2nd that can use QBs, hopefully this will create a demand for our spot. It's a good thing we are picking before NE as we all know they love to trade back and add picks. Trading back would allow us to add an extra 3rd

Round 2

Jamie Collins OLB & either Menelik Watson, Kyle Long or Terron Armstead at RT

Barwin's a FA and Im not sure we can retain him. Collins gives us an explosive edge rusher and he also has the ability to play inside (he was a former DB)

Given Newton's knee surgery, I move RT ahead of WR at this point. The right side of our OL was a weakness last year, I would be happy adding any of these RTs in rd 2

Round 3

Ryan Swope WR
Brandon Williams NT
Aaron Dobson WR

Swope has terrific speed, is a good blocker in the running game, and he's a great runner after the catch

Brandon Williams is the big NT we've all wanted

Aaron Dobson is a bigger receiver that runs great routes and has great hands

Round 4

David Queensbury OG

More help for the OL

Round 5

David Bass OLB

Small school guy that has terrific pass rush skills, 56 TFLs and 39.5 sack during his career

Round 6

Earl Wolf S

Demps and Keo SUCK!

Round 7

Michael Williams TE

Big blocker that has pretty good hands

I like swope but he has a history of concussions. That worries me especially with Schaubs tendency to throw to receivers who have defenders with a bead on them. I wouldn't draft him before the fourth round.

Also would like to see an ILB in there somewhere. I really like Williams from Florida st. Late. Of course we could add depth there via free agency.

Other than that I like it.

Did he miss any game due to concussion?
I don't know the protocol in college.
How many times did he suffer concussion, do you know?

I have read several times and heard Mayok say he has had multiple concussions. That is the extent of my knowledge on the subject. With all the talk about concussions going on I'm not sure I would even draft a player that has a history of having them.

Man, what a waste!

I don't like this thinking. The right side was a weakness, so we'll put a rookie in at that spot?

It wasn't a talent issue, you can look at Newton & see he has the talent to play RT. It was an inexperience & having to deal with inexperience on his left as well.

I'm all for improving the pedigree of our OL, don't get me wrong. I just don't like the reason given for going with a RT. Give me a 1st rounder on the OL who expects to win & I'm all for it.

But think Duane Brown's rookie year before you start thinking all our problems are cured.

Other than that, I like your mock & your thought process.

I know Brown struggled as a rookie but he played LT which is more difficult and every guy has their own learning curve. Remember how well Charles Spencer played as a rookie before his injury? I don't dislike Newton and think he has talent. I'd love to have him fill the swing T.
I also don't like our depth at OT. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to sign a quality FA but I'm not sure we have the money.

Hmm, hadn't heard that about Swope. I'll have to think about that...

Wouldn't mind adding an ILB but the more I think about it the more I'd like to see Reed inside. He's big and fast with good movement skills (remember he came to AZ as a RB).

Another thought I had would be to take a look at Brad Jones from GB he had a great season and might not command as big a salary as Barwin.

I'm torn. I would love to get a Franchise type of RT; I just don't know if we should spend a high round pick for one this year.

Otherwise, I love Armstead. He's got a mean streak in him.

I have reservation about Collins though.
He has great athleticism but looks like a project.
I think second round is too high of a grade for him; basically, it's just potential.
He's so raw.

I think given Schaub's statuesque mobility, we really need to up grade our OL. All QBs suffer in the face of pressure, some moreso than others, and I think Schaub suffers a bit more than other top QBs. I'd love Newton at the swing tackle as well

I hear you on Collins, but as a relatively new DE he racked up 20 TFLs and 10 sacks. He's also a converted DB which means he could play some ILB. Given that injuries crop up every year, having guys that are flexible could prove useful over a 16 game season.

Nfldraftscout gives him a 2-3 projection, I was thinking we could grab him at 54. In a perfect world (if Swope has injury issues) we could grab Patton at WR at 54 then Collins with our first pick of rd 3

Four DOCUMENTED concussions at A&M (two of which knocked him out cold). And until just very recently, colleges have had a very loose protocol re. concussions. That may better account for why he only missed a week of practice following each......to be playing each of the next games. It would not be surprising for "birdies" to be following him into the NFL.

My attempt to provide positive feedback- FWIW

Newton had minor surgery so as to come back stronger & more solid than ever plus experienced . I think RT is locked down, gotta trust them on this one however taking OT off the board in first round is never a bad idea especially if he's BPA. I would stay away from trading up or down as a mock draft is concerned it can be quite confusing as well creates wrong message to newbies expecting unrealistic results.

I really like Dobson he would be a project, like Jacoby was in 3rd but he has better core strength & hands.

Queensburry looks like a good ZBS Tackle who could kick inside to LG. excellent pick.

Like Bass kid as well. Core special teams player adds depth with upside to develop.

Not sure I would wait until 6th rd to address secondary? Impending free agency could really force Texans hand.

Williams in 7th? He'll yeah, but did I miss something like a broken Tibia in a pick-up basketball game or something? Dude would be a starting blocking TE & really increase pocket pro for Matt.

Overall I like your eye for talent.

If you've got inside info. lets hear it, last I heard McClain said it was "major surgery" but that guys so full of **** his eyes are brown. This would be very good news if it's minor, and I also think that Newton if healthy will be our future at RT and be just fine next season.

I hope you guys are right on Newton. I would love it if he can lock the Rt spot down for the foreseeable future. I saw a lot of good and bad watching him last year. Maybe the bad was due to his knee being tweaked???

Given that Schaub is our guy for the next several years, personally, I feel like we need to do all we can to give him a clean pocket. It seems to me that a lot of his bad INTs come from trying to get rid of the ball quickly when under duress. If we keep the pocket clear then maybe most of those pick 6s go away as well. I also contribute Arians slightly off year to a downgrade in run blocking.

Newton was making great progress before he got hurt. I'm worried about knee injuries period, so I am concerned that he can return to form. Playing on a knee that eventually needed major surgery is also a big concern.

I think drafting a potentially dominate RT, or bringing in a FA, would do for the defense what Jj Watt has done for the defense.

I like Newton & hope the best for him, but that OL needs to perform at another level. Winston's strong side run blocking, with Duane Brown like pass pro...... a tall order, I know.

First, the Texans haven't indicated anything on whether they are confident with Newton. I have yet to see anything on the field that would indicate he's the answer at RT. Fringe vet Ryan Harris outplayed him. The Texans will likely go bargain basement hunting for an OT in the offseason. And that guy might beat out Newton.

my memory must be failing, I remember him getting hurt against Detroit (last quality win, less beating Bengals again) he sat out one game, then was listed as probable through the season. Which does pose question how major of injury was it & then why wait until February to have surgery?
  1. Newton is either tough as heck, a competitor with passion for the game
  2. Texans medical staff determined he couldn't hurt it anymore that he was good to go on limited basis
  3. Texans Medical staff doesn't know what they're doing
  4. he re-aggravated injury after season

Anyway up to Detroit I thought he did play well, with exceptions of a few false starts which is to be expected. His development was hindered by the revolving door @ RG. Also Caldwell never came back from his injury, that certainly wasn't in the plans & under-story of entire season in regards to offensive line struggles. He is a free agent right? So with experience Brooks & Jones Texans should have much improved play next to Newton.

This is my evaluation also. McClain may be correct with surgery being major but nothing we know of (as you state) indicates that.

With the history of the Texans medical staff I'm going with #3 on your list.

Bottom line is Newton wasn't good enough last yr. Will he improve? Who knows, but using a 3rd/4th rd pick to hedge the Newton bet seems like a good idea.

I believe in Newton's ability to improve and solidify the RT spot next season, but mid round OT for insurance, future swing OT, and possible O-line future starter is a very good idea.

A while back we talked about using our own picks to trade up for extra 2nd rounders, now it seems that we have so many holes in the team to fill there won't be any trade ups and we'll keep all of our expected 11 picks.

Three seconds, comp 3rd and a 4th = WR, NT, OT, S, and ILB.

As long as the added 2nd rounders are early in the 2nd, I'm all for this. With this we obviously traded down from the 1st round and should have an added 3rd or 4th rounder coming to us from whoever we traded with as well.
