No QB's to groom

K.D.

Waterboy
After watching the senior bowl and the qb's who played, I'm content that their wasn't any QB who really stood out. A couple of them did afew good things, but for the most part, nothing was impressive.

Troy Smith... too small, inconsistent, throws too high cuz it's hard to see over the line. Not a TEXAN!!
Chris Leak...never did like da kid, nowhere near NFL caliber, good college qb that's about it. Not a TEXAN!!
Drew Stanton...don't know alot about him but he had afew good moments in limited minutes, seemed poised and in control of
himself. Might get alittle consideration but depends on what rnd we might consider him in. TEXAN 50-50
Jordan Palmer... i'm not gonna try and fool anyone but HELL NO. This kid is definately not ready, he might make it cuz of his
last name, but that s##t ain't working round here. Not a TEXAN!!
Troy Palko...he looked pretty good, did afew good things, like the fact he's a lefty, seems to have nice arm strength, impovised
in the pocket to make some plays, seems really motivated to show what he's got. TEXAN 60-40
Kevin Kolb...(last but not least), didn't look all that impressive, seem to struggle dropping back, had problems with the hand-
offs, made afew good throws, time was limited, local kid so we know what throws he could make and what kind of
mobility he has,all in all might be able to get some attention. TEXAN 60-40
My point in all of this is If we are looking for a qb to groom it might not happen until next year. I wouldn't be upset if we didn't draft a qb this year or if we did i'm pretty sure the rnd in which we draft him is going to play a significant role. I wouldn't draft one until the 4th rnd and beyond.
P.S.
Rufus Alexander is not that good, really got exposed tonight.
Joe Staley isn't that good neither, got blown up acouple of times.
Patrick Willis is the real deal.
Polunsky didn't do jack, never got his name mentioned.
Sleeper LB would be Everett or D. Harris from Michigan.
Brandon Meriwether in 2nd rnd, versatile guy and he's legit.

Feel free to resspond!!

the QB that looked the best to me was stanton, but still not impressed, to bad it was rainy and cold,

but who got the MVP? i didnt stick around to see

I want go that far. But what I will say is that projecting one of these guys to
come in here and after two seasons, be playing at a higher level than DC is currently playing, is more a function of wishfull thinking than serious reasoning.

Also say, Troy "Tatter Tot " Smith does have the skill set to flourish in this offense. And coming from me...that says a lot. I hate smurf QBs. They take the guy in the fourth you'll here no squawking from me. And I don't know who it was last week banging the board with "Kolb as been in a simular offense for seven years" and therefore "he will flourish here. He'll have no trouble adapting here"...like I posted...this guy is a pure pocket passer period. Unless you can fix the guys feet and shoulders on the move...he cannot run this offense. He's a train wreck when throwing on the run.

Will agree with ya though. Anyone finds a starter past day one, a Tom Brady
guy, that staff has earned their oats in spades this year.

Should of been Levi Brown. That o-line crushed the south d-line the first half. Levi led the way. You'll notice..the way Gruden called off the dogs...he sat Levi down and went with the domer the rest of the game at OLT.

Lanes,tunnels,valleys,highways,bi-ways call it what you want, he still have a hard time of getting the ball thru.

I agree: Tater Tot will have to put his rice in the bowl by useing waggels, moving the pocket on roll outs, and scrambling. In the pocket, every throw will be an adventure. If we take him, going to be entertaining anyway.

I actually think Troy Smith looked the best out of the QB's...He showed good Mobility, threw well on the run, and excellent pocket presence....He also had two or three passes dropped. I know he made some mistakes, but all QB's make mistakes. That's why he you have coaches in the NFL, the top of their proffession. They get paid big bucks to develop players. The balls he threw low or off target were probably due to the fact that the balls were wet. During the season I didn't see too much of that. Overall I was impressed with his performance.

The probelm with Troy Smith isn't "getting the ball through"...

He has an over the top throwing motion, so his release point is the same or similar to some of the taller QB's...

The problem he is going to face is being able to see over his lineman...Thus far he hasn't shown that to be a problem...

I get where you coming from X, but you can't tell me that the TD pass he threw would've been picked off or batted down by an experienced NFL conerback.

If AP is gone at our pick I think we should trade down a couple of spots, get an extra 2nd or 3rd and take Levi Brown. I really think he could be a good LT for us and is better than many people think. We need O-line help and every one has said it time and time again, why not shore up that problem?? Plus if Spencer comes back our o-line could actually *gasp* be good!

Brown...Pitts...(Flannagan/McKinney/Weary)...Winston...Spencer

That would be a formitable group. An even wilder hair go back to back and end up with

Brown.....Pitts....Kalil....Spencer....Winston

That there is a super bowl grouping of o-lineman.

I would reverse the Spencer - Winston set, but yes, that would be a killer group of young guys and in two years would very likely be a real dominate line. Only problem, Kallil and Brown will both go in the 1st round. Only be able to get one of them Pete.

If any scout or general manager or coach were to judge a player based on the Senior Bowl, I'd be worried. There are multiple years of game film to watch for each player. The Senior Bowl or the Combine isn't the end all determination for where a player is going to go.

You're porbably correct. He matches the ZBS. I don't know how many of those between the eight and the forty would have a need at center as the thrity ninth BPA on their board ? Possible not likely. Saw some Teams sniffing Manny Ramerez this week. He won't last very long either. He's got the same knock on him as Spencer had last year. He's not a ZBS guy. He's a mauler.

I'm hoping that Spencer comes back at 85 percent by the break of summer camp. That would read to me the right side. Erick is a liablity there for sure. But he was improving. A lot of folks are putting Erick at RG for sure. But at this point in time...I'm tring to protect the greater asset in '07 for '08...Spencer. Going to be a cring shame if Spencer doesn't make it back.

you guys have some really good ideas posted but don't address the threads premise that there where "No QB's to groom" today. I must respond - would be really sad if that's the case.

Troy Smith- is a leader, a very bright & positive individual. Brees is a pretty fair comparison. although he is not a fit for Kubiaks system I would not be surprised if a team like Tampa takes a chance on developing him as their QB for the future. of all the QB's @ the Senior Bowl he has the best release, hes accurate and can throw on the run.

Drew Stanton- his throws are not crisp & lack good rotation/spin but he is a classic progression style QB in the mold that Kubiak likes. maybe the Texans like him so much they use their 2nd rd. pick on him, that seems about the area he should be drafted (top of the 2nd). I beleive from watching him all week despite his mistakes he learns from them and adjusts, that what your looking for in a QB to groom- coachability.....it will depend on how high the Texans staff feels about him, do they feel now is the time to bring a QB in to groom or go with someone experienced via FA.

Tyler Palko- Scouts are quick to point out how tall a quarterback is or how strong of an arm he has. Palko, characterized as a "system quarterback" by some, is exactly that. He lacks the measureables scouts prefer, but is such a heady, gutty leader that if placed in the right system, can be successful in the NFL. For every Peyton Manning in the league who could be successful in nearly every system, there are a dozen Jeff Garcias, who, when placed in a system with talent around them, suddenly become winning quarterbacks. Palko will be a 2nd day pick, but five years from now, he'll still be in the league, perhaps competing for a starting role. Some of the quarterbacks selected ahead of him will be long gone.

Tom Brady - Positives: Good height to see the field. Very poised and composed. Smart and alert. Can read coverages. Good accuracy and touch. Produces in big spots and in big games. Has some Brian Griese in him and is a gamer. Generally plays within himself. Team leader.

Negatives: Poor build. Very skinny and narrow. Ended the '99 season weighing 195 pounds and still looks like a rail at 211. Looks a little frail and lacks great physical stature and strength.
Can get pushed down more easily than you'd like. Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush. Lacks a really strong arm. Can't drive the ball down the field and does not throw a really tight spiral. System-type player who can get exposed if he must ad-lib and do things on his own.

Summary: Is not what you're looking for in terms of physical stature, strength, arm strength and mobility, but he has the intangibles and production and showed great Griese-like improvement as a senior. Could make it in the right system but will not be for everyone.

the mvp of the north team should have been that defensive line...okoye pretty much made justin blalock his b*&%# the whole game...adam carriker looks like what mario is supposed to be...where did kareem brown come from...david harris looked stout...as far as QB's go this was a horrible game for all of them...drew stanton was the only one IMO who had a decent game...at this point i wouldn't be dissapointed if we didn't draft a QB this year

I love ya big guy....But i stand to dissagree. If anything Tater tot moved out from under Ginn Jr.'s shadow yesterday. He throws very well on the run. He is a heady scrambler and has a keen clock/pocket awareness. He could be a very nice pick for us. Kubiack in this system could make that work by what I posted above: Move the pocket, run waggles and not depend too much on the guy in the pocket. Smith could definatly move the chains with this offense. Out the window will be the slants and short three step drop stuff. Now will he fair any better than DC with the front five we currently have on the roster....nope.

I would have no problem Meeco coaching the guy up at mike and moving Meeco to the will. I wanna see if we got Lawerence Taylor or not. Someone is going to get a fair LB with David Harris.

Maybe....

But at the same time you have to admit.....It was a pretty good throw....

I actually thought that Tyler Palko was the best QB out their yesturday. He wasn't pretty, but he was very effective. On third down he rushed for a first down and on one play flipped the ball to a receiver to move the chains. Again, he wasn't pretty, but he did the little things to get the job done and thats what I love in a QB.

If we are looking for a QB to groom, I think it should be Drew Stanton. A 1st round pick coming into the year, he dropped into the 2nd or 3rd with the season Michigan State had. I think he shined at times, the best ball he threw all day was the fade for the touchdown. He put the ball exactly where it needed to be, on the receiver's back shoulder to where the defender had no play on the ball. Also, he rolled out on one play in his 2nd series of the game I beleive, and it looked awfully like a play taken out of Kubiak's play book.
