Nick Caserio Draft Prototypes

Nick Caserio became the Patriots Director of player personnel in 2008. That made Nick the #2 guy in the draft room, behind The Hoodie. I thought we would use the pre-draft period to go over Caserio and Belichick's draft choices over the past decade by position groups. Is there a proto type, based on size, speed, school, combine test? Has that changed over the years? Are there things Caserio looks for in a prospect that can be quantified?

I'm starting at the CB position, where the Patriots selected 11 players over the past decade.

2011 2nd Round Ras-I Dowling, Virginia, 73", 198 lbs, 4.40 (40)- no 3-cone, no VJ
2011 7th Round Malcolm Williams, TCU, 71", 200 lbs, 4.47 (40), 40" VJ, no 3-cone
2012 7th Round Alfonzo Dennard, Nebraska, 70", 204 lbs, 4.48 (40), 37" VJ, no 3-cone
2013 3rd Round Logan Ryan, Rutgers, 71", 191 lbs, 4.56 (40), 32.5" VJ, 6.69 3-cone
2014 6th Round Jemea Thomas, Georgia Tech, 69", 192 lbs, 4.50 (40), 36" VJ, no 3-cone
2015 7th Round Darryl Roberts, Marshall, 71", 187 lbs, 4.36 (40), 39" VJ, 6.66 3-cone
2016 2nd Round Cyrus Jones, Alabama, 70", 197 lbs, 4.49 (40), 33" VJ, 6.71 3-cone
2018 2nd Round Duke Dawson, Florida, 70", 208 lbs, 4.46 (40), no 3-cone, no VJ
2018 6th Round Keion Crossen, Western Carolina, 69", 178 lbs, 4.33 (40), 39" VJ, 6.67 3-cone
2019 2nd Round Joejuan Williams, Vanderbilt, 75", 211 lbs, 4.64 (40), 36" VJ, 6.92 3-cone
2019 7th Round Ken Webster, Ole Miss, 70", 203 lbs, 4.43 (40), 43" VJ, 6.85 3-cone

Average Ht: 71"
Average Wt: 197 lbs
Average 40: 4.47
Average VJ: 37"
Average 3-cone: 6.75

Pretty standard for the position. The anomaly is Joejuan Williams. Way above average size. Sub par speed and quickness. Williams was outside the norms for the position. But, it was recent. So it's possible that jumbo CBs are something the Texans might look at, if one were to be available.

Here are the (9) EDGEs the Pats selected from 2011-2020:

Average Ht: 75"
Average Wt: 257 lbs
Average 40: 4.75
Average VJ: 34.5"
Average BJ: 119"

Early in the decade, the Pats preferred longer, beefier pass rushers. But, that changed to smaller, quicker edges by the end of the decade. How that translates to the Texans (who will begin playing a different defensive front) remains to be seen.

Not sure there's much to learn from this, other than the Pats disregard for rookie D-linemen. 5 in 10 drafts? The Pats drafted that many TEs over the same period. I guess they believe D-Linemen are made rather than born. Ironically, the opposite of Belichick mentor Bill Parcell's "Planet" theory.

Right so I dunno how much alike or dissimilar the Lovie Smith 3-4 is compared to what Belichick was running in NE, but one would think
we'd be looking for the smaller, quicker edges who are often discovered among the ranks of the tweeners coming out of college ?

So based on this information, which CB prospects in this draft fit his mold?

No matter the size of the LB, the Pats have preferred plus athletes. I don't think that will change with Caserio move to the Texans.

I really like LB- Charles Snowden, Virginia (6-6 @ 243 lbs). This guy is a former basketball prospect with good feet. What I really like.....his ability to cover TE’s early or downfield. He possesses coveted size and could be a great neutralizer against TE’s who routinely enjoy big days against this Texans defense.

Who else was available when each one of those players were drafted? He might have preferred a shorter faster pressed type corner but ended up with something else as best available. I am more interested in how the players he selected turned out.

Rochelle
Ambry Thomas
Adebo
St. Juste
Gowan

He doesn't fit the mold but Belichick drafted his dad and if he fell to 67 I would run the card to God'ell. Asante Samuel Jr.
I’m not the biggest fan of Rochelle. His senior bowl week was one to forget. I’m high on Thomas and a few others.

I thought Lovie ran a 4-3?
The overabundance of changes in Houston has left some big revamps mostly ignored at this stage of the process. One aspect rarely discussed among the rundown of alterations to the Texans organization is the defense adjusting from a 3-4 scheme to a 4-3 alignment as part of new coordinator Lovie Smith's plan.

You are right, and I stand corrected.
Dank and I was looking forward to seeing the ole 3-4 this Fall.

I'm thinking Rochelle is like a clump of clay to be molded.

I'm much higher on Gowan and Thomas than Rochelle. But Rochelle has physical gifts that the others I listed dont have. I'm interested to see how risk averse Caserio is.

Safeties drafted by New England from 2011-2020:

2012 2nd Round Tavon Wilson Illinois 6'0" 205 lbs 4.52 (40), 32" VJ, 7.04 3-cone
2013 3rd Round Duron Harmon Rutgers 6'0 196 lbs 4.51 (40), 36" VJ, 7.02 3-cone
2015 2nd Round Jordan Richards Stanford 5'11 211 lbs 4.65 (40), 32" VJ, 6.74 3-cone
2020 2nd Round Kyle Dugger Lenior-Rhyne 6'1" 217 lbs 4.49 (40) 42" VJ, No 3-cone

Average Ht: 72"
Average Wt: 207 lbs
Average 40: 4.54
Average VJ: 35.5"
Average 3-cone: 6.93

Not very many picks allocated to the Safety position. But if they did go Safety, it was Day 2. Hard to extrapolate much from a small sample size like this.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings at all if Caserio drafted the most athletic DT in this draft at 67 (Milton Williams) and then trade back into the 3rd rd and draft Ellerson Smith who's 1 of the most athletic Edges in this draft. These 2 picks would definitely help the anmemic pass rush.

Safeties that I think would be good additions are R. Grant, D. Deablo, a sleeper prospect C. Uphoff.

I wouldn’t draft him higher than a late 6th. I understand his physical traits, but he wasn’t a threat at all when he faced higher competition at the SB.
A guy I’d take a flyer on that still had a decent SB week would be Darren Hall out of SDSU.

Early in the decade, the Pats preferred longer, beefier pass rushers. But, that changed to smaller, quicker edges by the end of the decade.

Analytics showed there wasn’t a significant correlation between length and overall success for EDGE, so they adjusted.

How that translates to the Texans (who will begin playing a different defensive front) remains to be seen.

Feeds into it as 4-3 ends that can be aligned at 6-tech, 7-tech, or 9-tech can be smaller and need to be quicker penetrators.

I am interested in Trill Williams cornerback from Syracuse. Reminds me a bit of Kareem Jackson and may need a year to adapt. If he advances as I think, he could have a Jackson type career.

He has played WR, safety and corner and would be best if Lovie settles on one of the DB positions. Unfortunately I think he will be bounced between corner and safety to his detriment on any team that selects him.

Average Ht: 75"

The Patriots have selected jumbo IOL, and smaller IOL. Doesn't seem they took much interest in combine numbers. Main takeaway would be Power 5 schools on the 3rd day.

Offensive Tackles drafted by New England from 2011-2020:

2011 1st Round Nate Solder Colorado 6'8" 319 lbs 4.96 (40), 21 BP, 7.44 3-cone

Have always drafted OTs with length. Except for using a 1st rounder on one of the shortest OTs in recent memory. Have not been afraid to pull the trigger on injured OTs.

Tight Ends drafted by New England from 2011-2020:

2011 5th Round Lee Smith Marshall 6'6" 266 lbs 4.94 (40), 29" VJ, 25 BP

Not a lot of draft capitol spent on TE during the decade. Not surprising, when you have an All Pro (Gronk) on the roster. When Gronk retired, the Pats did spend 2 2nd day picks on the position. So it's safe to assume Caserio values the position. Look for a good sized, good athlete to be drafted at TE during some point in the draft.

Wide receivers drafted by New England from 2011-2020:

2012 7th Round Jeremy Ebert Northwestern 5'10" 200 lbs 4.38 (40), 33" VJ, 6.70 3-cone
2013 2nd Round Aaron Dobson Marshall 6'3" 210 lbs 4.37 (40), 35" VJ, 7.19 3-cone
2013 4th Round Josh Boyce TCU 5'11 206 lbs 4.38 (40), 34" VJ, 6.68 3-cone
2014 7th Round Jeremy Gallon Michigan 5'7" 185 lbs 4.49 (40), 39" VJ, 7.07 3-cone
2016 4th Round Malcolm Mitchell Georgia 6'0" 198 lbs 4.45 (40), 36" VJ, 6.94 3-cone
2016 7th Round Devin Lucien Arizona St. 6'0" 201 lbs 4.49 (40), 34.5" VJ, 6.94 3-cone

2019 1st Round N'Keal Harry Arizona St. 6'2" 228 lbs 4.53 (40), 38.5" VJ, 7.05 3-cone

Average Ht: 71"
Average Wt: 201 lbs
Average 40: 4.44
Average VJ: 35.5"
Average 3-cone: 6.91

Be it an outside or slot, the Pats like their receivers to test well. Outside WRs should be 6'+. Not a lot of success stories in the past decade.

Running Backs drafted by New England from 2011-2020:

2011 2nd Round Shane Vereen California 5'10" 210 lbs 4.49 (40), 34" VJ, 6.95 3-cone
2011 3rd Round Stevan Ridley LSU 5'11 225 lbs 4.65 (40), 36" VJ, 6.78 3-cone
2014 4th Round James White Wisconsin 5'9" 204 lbs 4.57 (40), 32 VJ, 7.05 3-cone
2018 1st Round Sony Michel Georgia 5'10" 214 lbs 4.54 (40), No VJ, No 3-cone

Average Ht: 70"
Average Wt: 214 lbs
Average 40: 4.56

Average 3-cone: 6.92

Short, squatty RBs have been exclusive with the Pats the past decade. More interested in short area quickness than long speed. Receiving ability has been high on the Patriot's checklist for RBs.

Quarterbacks drafted by New England from 2011-2020:

2011 3rd Round Ryan Mallett Arkansas 6'7" 253 lbs, 11" Hands, 5.24 (40), 58 mph Ball Velocity
2014 2nd Round Jimmy Garoppolo E. Illinois 6'2" 226 lbs, 9" Hands, 4.97 (40) 56 mph Ball Velocity
2016 3rd Round Jacoby Brissett North Carolina St. 6'4" 231 lbs, 10" Hands, 4.94 (40), 56 mph Ball Velocity
2018 7th Round Danny Etling LSU 6'2" 222 lbs, 9" Hands, 4.76 (40), 56 mph Ball Velocity
2019 4th Round Jarrett Stidham Auburn 6'2" 218 lbs, 9" Hands, 4.81 (40), NA Ball Velocity

Average Ht: 75"
Average Wt: 230 lbs
Hand Size: 9.5"
Average 40: 4.94
Ball Velocity: 56 mph

The Pats look for good size QBs, less concerned with mobility.

The Pats look for good size QBs, less concerned with mobility.

Looks like there's a chance that Mills/Trask could be the next Texans QB.

Who will New England and Chicago be drafting in round 1 or 2?

The first two rounds will be key and the rush to draft the QB's will be interesting to watch. Mond may not even make it to the third. For me, it will be interesting to see who is drafted first, Mills or Mond. I think it will be Mills.

If there isn't a QB frenzy, both Mills and Mond, based on not being NFL ready, would be projected to the third or forth rounds. Trask is one of most NFL ready talents and is projected for the first, but has to go to the right team. He would be a natural fit in New England.

From what I've read, it seems Chicago is strongly leaning toward taking a QB and are considering both Mills and Mond, with Mills possibly being their first consideration.

Reading about team needs, those posted since the Watson fiasco, the Texans are listed as needing a QB. Teams such as Chicago must be worrying about the Texans taking a QB at 67, pushing them to take the QB they want in the second, rather than risk the third, where they would normally want to make the selection.

Also, I think Denver may be considering a QB, possibly Mills. There's seems to be a lot of pressure on teams wanting a QB to overdraft the position which naturally has the tendency to lead to a QB frenzy.

The first two rounds will be interesting.

Early in the decade, the Pats preferred longer, beefier pass rushers. But, that changed to smaller, quicker edges by the end of the decade. How that translates to the Texans (who will begin playing a different defensive front) remains to be seen.
Joe Tryon - 6'5'', 259 pounds. He's my new favorite at #67.

Still represents a solid pick and a position of need. Size and ability to cover would be a big help in RD5 or RD6.

Nick Caserio has been a frequent requested panel member at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference.

Here's his 2021 appearance there on a panel "Say Goodbye to the 40 Yard Dash: The Future of NFL Roster Building":

If Caserio could drop the word “right” from his vocabulary then he might be palpable to listen to. First was Casserly with “ok” now this ****.

I don’t appreciate being talked at rather than to. That’s just a personal thing. He paints with a broad brush, not just analytics, but player development and football in general. Obviously Cal bought into his stick hook line and sinker, but not me. Players are smart. They either decide they can play for this guy or not. That will define his type.

That was an older video. If you have listened to any of his recent conferences/videos, he has had the word "right" entirely coached out of him.

One needs to be aware that the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference is a gathering of professionals [leading figures in sports analytics, business, research and technology]. ............and was never meant to talk at or talk to any particular outside individuals.

So, Caserio was coached, “right”

He didn't realize how much he was relying on that verbal crutch, which is all it is. It had not been anywhere close to as prominent as it was in these recent instances. He's been a little wound-up since becoming a GM, maybe because he just stepped into a big pile of poo💩 here, but he'll settle in with a little time. He corrected it himself. A lot of people have a crutch -- you know, know what I mean, uhhh, ummm, like -- but most don't realize it until they record and listen to themselves.

Mine was 'probably'. Irritated a lot of people. I still irritate a lot of people without using the word.
