* I don't know if I'm reading it right...If it will be effective this year, or they are just going to approve it this year...

Adam Schefter is reporting that NFL teams are on the verge of increasing the size of their eight man practice squads. Find out how big the projected bump is, as well as who can be on the practice squad and what kind of money they'll make, on Battle Red Blog.

This qualifies as big news in the NFL and even bigger news for players who are looking to continue their careers as professional football players.

By next week, NFL is expected to increase size of practice squads to 10 players from 8, per source. So 64 more jobs.

Who is eligible to be placed on the practice squad, you ask? From an earlier post about the NFL calendar:

...free agents who do not have an accrued season of free agency credit or who were on the 46-player active list for less than nine regular season games during each of any accrued seasons. A player cannot serve on the practice squad for more than three seasons.

.@AdamSchefter This season players on #NFL practice squads, will make $6,300 per in season week. #SportsBiz

So you could now have a player with 32 reg season games over 1st 2 seasons eligible still for practice squad in 3rd year...

The specifics on 2 of those 10 practice squad spots that La Canfora just tweeted, are huge. Opens up completely new discussions for rosters.

Also, it will now require 6 games spent on a practice squad to count as a practice squad season. It used to require only 3 games

....

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have agreed to expand NFL Practice Squads for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Absent an extension of the agreement, the current rules will be reinstated beginning with the 2016 season.

Under the agreement, 2014 and 2015 Practice Squads will increase from the current maximum of eight players to 10 players.

In addition, the criteria for Practice Squad eligibility has been expanded in two respects.

First, a player must have a minimum of six games – up from the current three games – on a Practice Squad in order for that season to count as one of the player’s three permissible seasons of Practice Squad service.

Second, each club will be permitted to sign a maximum of two Practice Squad players who have earned no more than two accrued seasons of free agency credit. Absent this exception, a player who has earned one or more accrued seasons would not be eligible for a Practice Squad unless the player spent fewer than nine games on a club’s 46-player active list in each of his accrued seasons.

All other practice squad rules under Article 33 of the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement will remain in effect during the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Sounds like theoretically the could cut a player from 2012 and put them on practice squad...

I think....

They were talking about this which lets you stash a couple much more experienced guys:

Does anyone know if the International Player provision is still in effect with the change to 10 practice squad players? Under the old rules a team was allowed to have a ninth practice squad player if he was not a U.S. citizen. Curious if this is still allowed which means a team could have 11 practice squad players or will the maximum be 10.

I believe this is no longer in effect. May have shut down when NFL Europe died.

You are correct indeed that the International player provision is no longer in effect. But its discontinuance was not because of the demise of NFLE which occurred after the 1998 season. It was in fact deemed no longer needed when the PS was expanded from 8 to 10 in the 2014 season. That expansion was only set up as a 2-year trial (for the 2014 and 2015 season only). In June of this year, the NFL/NFLPA agreed to renew and maintain the 10 player PS for another 2 years (the 2016 and 2017 season).
