It appears as thou Baltimore got them a 4th RD comp pick for losing Owen Daniels who the Texans had cut earlier in 2014.

OD was not close to their biggest loss. Arthur Jones got a 5 yr $33 mil deal. Corey Graham 3 yrs $15 mil. Michael Oher 4 yr $20 mil.

Arthur Jones, Corey Graham and Michael Oher last year as Ravens was 2013. If Ravens received comp picks for them it was for the 2015 draft (last year). Comp picks for the 2016 draft are awarded for players who became free agents after the end of 2014 season.

Pernell McPhee and Torrey Smith both received considerably larger contracts than Daniels did last off season. It's highly likely that the sixth round compensatory pick they got was the one related to Owen leaving.

Thx for the catch.

McPhee was a 5th RD draft pick and his Ravens contract was likely close to rookie minimum. Teams are compensated for what they lost, not where lost players eventually sign.

That's just wrong. Nobody knows the exact formula for determining compensatory picks (and the NFL very purposely keeps it that way), but there are folks who have studied it in depth.
From Over the Cap.com:
Although the formula has never been revealed, by studying the compensatory picks that have been awarded since they began in 1994, I’ve determined that the primary factor in the value of the picks awarded is the average annual value of the contract the player signed with his new team, with an adjustment for playing time and a smaller adjustment for postseason honors.

Where they go doesn't matter but the size of their contract does. Significance of the loss is judged by where the market put their value on departure not their draft status/value on arrival. You have it bass ackwards.

Sorry Chief, that's strike three for you on this one, quit before you get further behind or deeper in this hole. With McPhee the Ravens LOST a 5th RD draft pick making rookie minimum. That's what they were compensated for. That,s it! (Actually that's strike four)

I quoted a respected site - you quoted yourself. What makes you say OTC.com is erroneous?
Since no one knows the exact formula used, Daniels may have been a 6th RD comp. My point however is the Texans lost a comp pick by cutting Daniels. Cak wasn't even in the right ball park.

I have agreed in the past the Texans made a poor choice cutting OD and losing out on a compensatory pick.

I disagree that the Ravens were awarded a 4th for OD. He was with the Ravens on a 1 yr minimal contract (spotrac lists earnings as $1 mil) and didn't get a huge K with Denver.

The worst case scenario is Baltimore got a 6th rd comp for Daniels
