John Below is a play by play of the 1st Qtr. I've been upset with the Texans coaching and offense for a long time. However, I wanted to disagree with you about the defense playing well. In the 1st Qtr the bend don't break defense allowed the Bills and Losman close to 90% of the playing time. The defense never stopped the drives and didn't allow our offense to get a start. There were no stops of the other team and that controlled the Texans by keeping them off of the field offensively. No QB is going to be warm when he sits as long as David did nor is he going to get in the game when the OC is calling a run on 1st down most of the game. I honestly believe the defense is broken as much as the offense, but people don't think so because of the lack of scoring. However, when Houston did score the defense immediately gave back the touchdown on the next drive. No, I'm sorry, but nothing is going well. The injury to Mathis I believe was also a negative, because we had no special teams play of any note which I believe the Texans have placed some high hopes for. This is what we have been seeing all along and nobody would allow anybody to question the coaching staff. Its very simple. The Bills fired their head coach and the new one said we have to go out and fix the left side of the Bills line by getting a LT and LG. He did that, so the question is why couldn't Houston do the same. In addition my observations were that the Texans were using the roll out to try to minimize O-line problems, but as soon as the other teams realized that all you need to do is contain Carr from rolling out the offense was over and done with because the O-line could not contain the rush up the middle. That has been happening for sometime. Those kinds of weaknesses are picked up in a hurry. I appreciate your candor and I hope others do, because this is a talented ball club that is being very badly coached and managed.

We had 7 offensive plays in the 1st qtr and 1 punt. The 1st series was a 3 and out and the 2nd one ended on an INT on 3rd down. You can not get your rythm with that kind of possession time.

What a freakin' joke. Absolutely incredible that you want to blame the D for not giving the O an opportunity. Your boy Carr and the rest of the O had the same number of opportunites as the Bills O, two--they just squandered them with a 3 and out and a 2 and INT. Pretty darn obvious the playing time disparity wouldn't have been so great if the O had marched down the field like they were supposed to.

By the way, did you watch this game?

The defense was the only positive thing from the game. They didn't get a break. They held the bills to fg's until they were worn out, the O needs play better simple as that.
 
Defense was ok in the 2nd half and great in the redzone, but to say the defense is good is crazy. P Buc alone was the cause for some huge yardage. And fact is, Carr did drive this team down to score and we gave it right back. There is not a sole on this team that can't take the blame, it was a total team implosion. Carr threw interceptions, every reciever missed a crucial ball, the TE couldn't block or catch, the oline couldn't hold a pocket and couldn't drive off the ball to open lanes, the RB couldn't see a whole, the FB couldn't blow through or pick up a blitz, the dlineman couldn't push up front, the linebackers were too busy playing read and react, the cornerbacks were used in one on one coverage, the safeties got torched. The coaches were outcoached and were not prepared for the blitzes, the OC didn't call enough quick routes, the OC didn't call enough blitz packages, special teams were....well, not so special.

Unfortunately its no joke because that was the game plan of the Bills. They wanted and kept the Texans offensively off of the field. They also figured out the contain on Palmer's so called tweeking of the offense. When you can't see the obvious then there's nothing one can say except here's what's happening and watch for it week after week. I will still say the one hope we have is if we can Mathis in the offense. He made a difference on special teams and he looks to have the same potentail for the offense. We need some one else other than AJ as a receiver. If you watched the int's the receiver never came back to the ball in most instances. This team is very poorly coached from a fundementals point of view. Remember Payne jumps off side 3 times in the 1st half and Greenwood jumped off 1 time along with a number of other defensive penalties which prolonged the Bills drives in the 1st half. By that time we were in a hole big time with no assemblance of play calling. Our OC never counters the other teams defense. Did Carr play well, I would say no, but he tried his best. When you have no supporting cast there is nothing you can do. AJ, DD and Carr can not do it by themselves. Bradford can't catch a ball if his life depended on it and I still don't think Gaffny is 100 % nor does he know the offense because of his lack of preseason play. We got rid of many of our young WR's for the sake of other positions. Hollings being one of them. We really do have a problem, because even the special teams play broke down. Mathis was again our hope there and Buchannon looked average at best. Morancy was simply a body.

That game was a "Welcome to the League" gift from Tommy Maddox (courtesy of Aaron Glenn). It was probably the flukiest game a person will see in their lifetime.

The defense held its own to keep us in the game but I wouldn't say they played well. Buchanon was giving up a lot of medium yardage stuff on consecutive plays and the middle linebackers looked lost. Peek and Babin were rarely getting to the QB unless it was on a designed screen. The D did a good job stopping the run but the DL wasn't really getting any push, and made it pretty easy for Losman to get the ball out. DL also weren't tying up multiple blockers so the LBs couldn't get anything done.

I feel it's my responsibility to point out that Vinny and I have gone over that game in great detail and determined that it's impossible to say for certain whether or not it was in fact a "fluke". (I still say it was a fluke)

In fact if he catches you using the word "fluke" in relation to that game then there could be serious ramifications for you, this board, Texans fans everywhere, and the future career of Diet Pepsi Machine. ;)

If Tommy Maddox had Diet Pepsi Machine blocking for him that day the Texans would have lost by at least two touchdowns.
 
My first post, Truley is correct. This was not just the coaching, the ol, or Carr. It was all. Noboday was prepared to play. From the Mgmt. to the waterboy. This was pityful!!!!!!!!!!! :brickwall, this happened last year preseason and this 1St game. I don't even think that this can be fixed. Here comes the oilers. :crying:

man, without a doubt. An NFL record like that - lowest offensive production in a winning effort - doesn't come along too often.

I...uhhh...don't really want to remind the Steelers of that one, either....nope, not this week. :cool:
 
:texflag: Let's not throw our boys to the wolves yet. We have a lot of talent on this team. We just need some coaching, any coaching would do at this point. That's been obvious since day 1. So let's pull together as fans, support our team and crucify the coaches. :challenge

The defense was HORRIBLE!!! Not as horrible as the offense, but horrible none the less. Regardless of how the offense played, the defense allowed a rookie quarterback with a make-shift offensive line (yes i said make-shift, they lost their best LT Jennings to free agency) to gain yardage like joe montana. the fact that we held them to fieldgoals was not a testament to our defense, but the fact that a rookie qb made some bad decisions. We wasted a 2nd and 3rd on a guy who was reminicent of the old oiler cb steve jackson getting burned by don beebe in 93. Our interior line and backers were run over at will in the 2nd half.

I am totally fed up with fangio's cerebral zone blitz. its this scheme that got him and jim mora fired in indy. instead of blitzing 4-5 plus one from either the middle or outside (buffalo used this to kill carr) we blitz and pull back which equals to a max of 4 rushing the passer against 5 or more blockers.
