My post Combine mock...let's hear it.

Wolf6151

All Pro
1. Kyle Wilson-CB, this pick is self explanatory.
2. Ben Tate-RB, custom made for the Texans system.
3. Mitch Petrus-OG, Mike Johnson is gone and we need O-line help.
4. Linval Joseph-DT, young, big, and productive. Rotational depth.
5. Myron Lewis-CB/FS, deep S class, depth behind Wilson.
6. Thomas Austin-OG, this might require a little luck, also plays C.
6. Barry Church-SS, depth behind Pollard, makes Barber and Ferguson expendable.
7. Walter McFadden-CB, low risk CB, hopefully makes Bennett and Molden expendable.

Alright, let's hear it. Opinions?

Eh,I just now started paying attention to this years prospects and the combine, soo i know what my favorite players numbers are and know what their all about.

BUT i'm really Uncomfortable Takeing 4 picks into our Secondary,I think our corners would be okay if we could get pressure from the DT spot,in fact I think they could be Really Good.

Number 1 pick i'd take Earl Thomas if he's there. Then again idk a whole lot about the Wilson dude,i'll go watch some film so my opinions arent set in stone.

Thanks. I moved Tate to the 2nd round because he had a great Combine and is most likely going in the end of the 2nd to top 3rd and is my favorite RB, besides Spiller, he is just custom made to be a Texan he's perfect for our system. I moved Linval Joseph up to the 4th for the same reason, though getting him there may require a little luck to be there at our pick in the 4th. I still worry about his height being an issue but it obviously wasn't an issue in college because he's got really good prodution. This is a super deep Safety class so Myron Lewis or Robert Johnson or some other mid level FS should fall a little. Thomas Austin might require a little luck as well but most folks have Sergio Render rated higher and Austin could fall a little. NFLdraftscout has him listed as a 7th-FA so it might be plausible. I really don't know much about Church but he's got good size and speed and frankly Ferguson and Barber suck so upgrading them wouldn't be that difficult. McFadden is listed as a 7th-FA on the sites I've looked at but he's got good speed and played against SEC competition. Everything but speed is coachable and you can never have to many CB's. Also there's no risk in the 7th round, he can go on the practice squad in case of injury. Even if he sucks it's not like Bennett or Molden have provided anything for the last 2 years, their just leaches on a paycheck.

I like Tate too, think he surprised some people but not me as much because I've always focused on his total game which was really not on exhibit @ the combine anyway so it doesn't change his draft grade from 3rd to 2nd. What is does change is how I stack the RB's in the 3rd. As far as favorite backs go in this draft to me its more like Spiller 1a & Ryan Mathews 1b.

Joseph is just too damn good to last that long (stacked bottom of 2nd rd. DT's). scouts know this if the public doesn't. I've watched ECU closely since the Chris Johnson days, they're alot like Georgia Tech program in that they are blessed with some amazing football talent, yet remain under the radar. Linvals running mate Jay Ross is probably worth a 4th. He would be an excellent rotational DT as a one gap 4-3. Good interior size @ 6'3" 313 long arms & big hands ran a 5.11 forty & did 30 reps 6 more than Gerald McCoy. Like his game film too not as strong or diruptive as Joseph, hence the lower grade but definitly NFL caliber.

You have a pretty good looking draft there, nice job. Only a couple things. I agree with beerlover, Joseph most likely wont be there in the 4th. I do disagree with his assessment on Ross though, I dont see anything more than a backup in him. Church is a LB in a SS body. It really would be like having an extra LB out there.

Great Job

1. Wilson- love this pick
2. Tate- I would wait a rd because one of Tate, Hardesty, Gerhart will fall. I love Joseph he's my 4th rated DT and is exactly what the Texans D is missing IMHO
3. Take the RB that falls hopefully Tate
4. Petrus or my favorite Newhouse hopefully falls to the 4th. I would consider using a 2011 pick to move up to the 3rd and take one of them.
5. Lewis- One of my favorite CB/S in this draft Smart long armed fast guy. If he's not there Johnson or T.Skinner should be there and would be a quality pick.
6. Austin- Dont like him and would rather double dip at RB. L.Coker or Stefon Johnson would be my choice.
6.Church- Dont know much about him but I would rather double dip at DT Kade Weston or Tevaseau would be my choice.
7. If McFadden is there you snatch him up in a heart beat. Dont think he'll be there. My choice Best K or P available.

I really like the time and thought you put into this mock.

2 & 3. I didn't want to wait on Tate or take the chance that he falls to the 3rd round, we all saw what happened to the Texans last year when waiting an extra round for a good RB. Coffee was taken before us because we waited and chose to take a situational, backup DE in the 2nd round instead of a starter. We tried to get cute and got bit instead. Hardesty is impressive but he's got an injury history and I don't like Gerhart for a ZBS system, just not quick enough. I think he's much more suited for a power blocking scheme like Minnesota or Pittsburgh run. Gerhart reminds me of John Riggins, and Riggins was successful because he ran behind the Hogs. Tate is quicker and just perfect for our needs.

4. Again I don't want to try and out think everyone else and take the chance that someone you really like falls. You can get screwed hard that way. There's 31 other teams picking plus compensatory picks at the end of the 3rd round. I like Newhouse as well and considered J.D. Walton as well, I'd take them in the 3rd also.

6. I thought of double dipping on a RB but with Slaton, Johnson, Foster, and Henry we really don't need any more youthful backup RB's. A late round RB wouldn't bring anything new to the team that these guys can't do and seems a waste of a pick when we've already got so much youth at RB.

6. Interesting idea on double dipping on the DT's but I chose Church because Ferguson and Barber suck and we need some depth behind Pollard, it shouldn't be that hard to be better than those guys. I also see Church as a special teams standout. I've seen a little bit of film on the guy and agree with rmartin65 he plays SS like a LB. He should be a good headhunter on special teams.

7. I've had a K and P in previous mocks but we just re-signed Turk (bad decision, JMO) so he's our P and Brown has several more years under contract and I don't think the Texans are ready to give up on him yet. I would bring in an UDFA Kicker for training camp competition though.

Hope this answers your issues.

I could wait until the 5th rd. to go get Ross (A) realize he's nothing special (Lance says the same thing about Tate) that seems to be what Texans thrive on isn't it on both interior lines? Has gotten bigger/stronger through the years and carries his weight well. Fairly quick and active for his size. Good stamina. a rotational late rd. DT that's what you get & hopefully he is blessed with enough athletic talent to keep improving. The reason I like ECU guys including Joseph (B) is they have size & are athletic, heck they have a decent Center Sean Allen (C) all-conference USA 1st team, a pretty under the radar RB Dominique Lindsay (D) not even the highest rated that goes to C.J. Wilson (E) also 1st team USA someone is going to do their homework on him & get a legit 3-4 DE or 4-3 LDE 6'2 7/8 290 long arms, strong & explosive.

I've watched ECU closely over the past 4 or 5 years as well and one thing that ECU has had throughout that time is a good defensive line. This year they have 3 NFL prospects. C.J Wilson is an extremely disruptive DE, I would watch out for someone taking him in the 2nd round. 6-3 290 lbs, he would be an immediate upgrade to Bulman, and could eventually push Antonio Smith. Jay Ross is kind of an unsung hero in that defense because Joseph is as good but much bigger. I would take Jay Ross in the 5th round, even if I had already taken a DT earlier, he can push the pocket and is solid against the run.

What do you think of Van Eskridge? Some people seem to really like him but I think he is too inconsistent.

I like it alot...RB, DB, Interior OL, DL all addressed with presumed talent....just don't see it happening though esp with all the DBs we took last year...I would throw in a LB/WR/QB for depth in stead of the 4th DB

Sounds like you have watched ECU pretty extensively, thats cool. I have only been able to watch one game, and pieces of other games (watching 2 games at once, flipping back and forth). Ross just never impressed me. He seemed to get his pressures when the guys surrounding him (Joseph and Wilson) were getting alot of attention. I have him rated as a solid 7th rounder, I would not be upset if the Texans picked him there. But a 5th? There will be more talented DTs available.

I like the Center alot actually. If they dont grab a center in the draft, he would be a good UDFA pickup.

Wilson seems like a great 3-4 end. Not really much more to say there.

I am not really a huge fan of Eskridge, I think he is maxed out. He had alot of stats, but I dont think he has the athleticism to continue at the next level.

Nice mock.

Wilson is in my top 3 targets for the 1st.

Tate is a good pick in the 2nd if we pass on Mathews in the 1st.

I like Mike Johnson a lot more that Petrus, but still a good pick.

Great pick with Joesph although I think his stock is soaring right now. Probably won't last past the 3rd.

I like Lewis and he's a bit of a tweener CB/FS, but he is more of a FS to me.

Good late pick with Austin. Gotta get those O-Lineman!

We definitely need a guy behind Pollard and I like Church. I think he'll be gone in the 5th though.

Not too sure about McFadden. If we take Wilson in the 1st then we probably don't need another CB.
