I have done a few mock drafts in my head (generally every night before falling asleep) but i have finally come up with something that i can say im happy with and fills ALL of our holes.
First off we trade down with Tampa (we get there 2nd and 3rd), from what i have read around the net they are interest in trading up to acquire either a player like c.jordan, r.quinn or r.kerrigan. If not tampa then perhaps san diego for the same reason.
I would trade down No matter who is on the board (apart from miller lol)
so here goes.....
Round 1 (pick 20)
Akeem Ayers OLB UCLA
Ayers as played in all the pass rushing postions in college from hand in the dirt to standing up. He also offers great versatility because of this and can also play inside.
So if Ryans or Cushing doesnt work we can move him inside.
His stock fell a little after the combine but had a fantastic pro-day by all accounts.
FYI the pats have been heavily linked with him, so if they like him so do i lol
Round 2a
Ras I Dowling CB Virginia
This guy if it weren't for injuries would have been a top 15 pick competing with amukamara as the number 2 cb.
He has tremendous speed and can play bump and run and hits hard.
Hopefully we obtain a veteran in FA and he and Jackson fight out for the number 2 spot and the loser plays nickel, both are hard hitters so this works.
Round2b
Quinton Carter S Oklahoma
Carter has played both safety position in college but will be drafted as a SS for the texans with Quinn moving to FS.
Doesn't quite have the overall speed you want but does have great instincts and plays faster on the field.
Covers well, and can hit hard.
Just what Phillips will want from his safeties.
Round 3a
Dontay Moch OLB Nevada
A poor mans v.miller.
has incredible burst of the line. does have limited pass rush moves and is a project but offers incredible x-factor ability and adds to depth at OLB.
Look for him to be our playmaker much like anderson did last year for us.
Round 3b
Tandon Doss WR Indiana
Finally we can move k.walter to the number 3 WR which is his natural positon.
We all know that we need WR help as walter and jj have not performed (jj is a possible FA) and andre isnt getting younger.
From reports his a quite guy who leads by example (sound familiar). His a big body to help in run support (will put on some extra weight as well) and has enough speed to stretch the field.
Unlike some of the WR in this draft his a football player, he catches the ball every well. Could be one of the steals of the draft!
He fits the mold in terms of what the texans organisation likes.
Round 4
Ian Williams NT Notre Dame
I have been on this guy for a loooong time.
Yes he offers no pass rush but he is an immovable object that will play the first 2downs to stop the run and can he stop the run!. Then we bring in mitchell for pass rush. On paper sounds pretty good. I think he offers great value in the fourth, has great character and played in the east-west game which phillips was apart of.
Round 5
Andrew Jackson G Fresno State
Last year was rated one of the better guards in the country but due to injury in 2010 has fallen off the radar. not much should be expected of him but should add a lot of depth and a lot of upside. Athletic, should work well in our zone scheme.
Also played in the East/West shrine game for the West which was coached by Phillips
Round 6
Chykie Brown CB Texas
Has first round athleticism but poor technique. IMO a good project in the 6th.
With quinn moving to FS we need depth at CB.
He wont get any playing time with dowling, jackson, allen, and a FA signing ahead of him.
We need some home town boys in this draft
Round 7a
Chris Prosinski FS Wyoming
We need depth at safety and speed.
Prosinski is a tweener but has good intelligence and great speed something we lack in our secondary. Could become a undrafted player but in the 7th round you cant reach. I look for athleticism in my depth players and he has this in abundance. Does however struggle against the run and in strength match ups.
Round 7b
Scott Tolzien QB Wisconsin
Smart, accurate and shows good timing. however has very poor arm strength.
Would be a good back up though because he would only have to make the smart check down to keep the ball in our hands.
Good character as well. Only concern he could get draft earlier. Im hoping he falls to us here.
