Let's not take into effect if we draft Bush or not. I'm just wondering, who would you rather keep if we have to cut either Jonathan Wells or Vernand Morency?

I would have to go with Wells. He wasn't the worst runner in the world last year when he had to fill in for Davis. He's also fullback-ish (6-1 252 lbs). I think I remember last year the Texans said they would play him a bit at fullback. Dunno how that worked out, but I could see Wells filling in for Moran Norris if he get's hurt.

Of course, if we had to cut Morency, that's just another waste of a pick. Casserly has already made his fair share of those...

Morency is going to be in the second year of his contract. Wells is a FA and I'm pretty sure will not be with the team unless he signs cheap. Morency is going to be fun to watch next year and has tons more upside than Wells. Wells will be backing up and playing special team for someone.

Wells will challenge to start for someone if he leaves our team. You've got a lot of unhappy RBs out there (Alexander, and Edge, for starters) and that will leave voids on teams as the RBs shuffle from team-to-team. That creates a space for Wells who has definitely turned it around since his rookie year. We know he's not true starter material, but I think he's been consistent enough in his moments of glory to show some teams in the NFL a certain amount of "up side."

He is versatile, as well, with the special teams aspect of his game. This makes it even more appealing to teams who are in need of quality backs who can fill more than one roster spot.

I don't see him staying here. I see him using this past couple of seasons as a way to either demand better money from the Texans or to test the market.

I really do like Morency, and I think he'll supplant Wells this coming season as the season progresses. However....I prefer to have Wells AND Morency on our team, and draft OL after trading the No. 1, so that we have at least three strong backs. But that's just me.

Who exactly can he start for? In a run happy offense, he couldnt hold onto a starting that was his for the taking? I like him as a special team player, but a starter? Stacey Mack, thats all I have to say.

I know I must be the only fan Tony Hollings still has, but he is a fantastic runner and I personally compare him to all the NFL greats. Signed, his dad.

I don't see Wells starting for anyone. He's a good 2nd back to have, but he's not a starter. Maybe for the Cardinals, he's probably better than JJ Arrington, but no one else. Indy has Dominic Rhodes as their backup, he can get the job done. He did rush for 1100 yards the season Edgerrin James was out.

I havent seen enough from morency but I dont really like Wells so as of now I'd go with morency.

If the CBA isn't extended, I could see an outside chance (10%) of Davis being traded and Wells being re-signed because he is more of a complementary back to Reggie Bush and will give the Texans more of a thunder and lightning backfield.

But I don't think it is going to happen.

If Wells is a backup then Morrency is a backup's backup. That's the way I see it. Wells is good at blocking better than Davis and Morrency and he's a power runner. Morrency doesn't run with power matter of fact he usually can't run well at all he needs alot of work with his balance and footing. Everyone who says he has alot of upside, I don't see it, in the few games he's played I haven't seen much improvement. Wells to me is better than Morrency.

Wells plays 3 positions, RB, FB, and special teams. Morency plays 1 position, RB. I'd rather us keep a guy like Wells who is alot bigger than having say Bush, Davis, and Morency. But IMO we're keeping Wells, DD, and Morency and drafting Bush. We had 4 RBs last year, why not 4 this year?

Why can't we just stick with Davis, Wells, Morency and a later round RB we pick up in the draft or see who else is available. We can add Bush (really dont care anymore about the Reggie n Vince talk) but we have other areas that need work like TE, OL and the defensive side of the ball. Our RB tandem worked ok last year so why change it if it aint broken I say *shrugs*...

Wells. Hes versatile...he can handle starting when necessary.. he is great on special teams...he can play FB...hes big and durable.

cant ask for more than that in a backup. Morency is less useful. Yah he has more upside..but i dont see him breaking out and becoming a star. Id rather have the depth that can help us in many ways... than the depth that can only play RB and is unlikely to ever completely win a starting spot.

I'd take Wells over Morency on what he does on special teams alone . The fact that he can play RB and FB is icing on the cake. He's also the best blocker of all the Texans backs .... This team needs more players like Wells . I really hope they can re-sign him.

Wells, good in short yardage situations - well better than DD.

I personally liked the way Morency would run straight into the opposing team on the kick off returns. Good stuff. :sarcasm:

Bigger back does not automatically mean better short yardage back:

2005

2nd and less than 3: Wells 1.6 ypc vs. DD 4.9 ypc
3rd and less than 3: 1 ypc vs. 2.7 ypc
4th and less than 3: 1.3 ypc vs. 4 ypc

3 year average:

2nd and less than 3: Wells 3.3 ypc vs. DD 3.6 ypc
3rd and less than 3: 1.2 ypc vs. 6 ypc
4th and less than 3: 0.8 ypc vs. 2.5 ypc

I personally voted Wells, but I would love to see both return.

Wells is a true team player and contributes wherever he plays on the field...love his attitude. However, anyone that saw Morency play at Oklahoma St. should see that the kid has tremendous upside. He was VERY explosive w/ great cutback/change of direction speed....think he could excel in Kubes' scheme.

I can't vote, because i would like them both more than anything.... so I can't even see the results. I think both Morency and Wells could compete for a starting job just about anywhere in the league...... Seattle, and Indy for sure, Miami, NewYork, Dallas, Even Denver.....

I exclude teams like NewYork(even though i don't see Tiki doing that again), Tampa, and Kansas City.... but not too many RBs are seated very deeply now a days.. OH yeah, ST. Louis, I think SJ is wholed up pretty good there. But just about anywhere else.

You're right on about Morency! He's going to suprise some people...

Wells is the "Big Back" that you need on your roster, I like him because he runs angry and will punish you when you come up and try and stick him.
Take this with a grain...but I've been told we will pursue T.J. Duckett if he is available. The Reeves connection I guess.

I enjoyed Wells last year BUT I got excited when Morencey got the ball. Duckett in place of Wells? I can live with that.

It's an upgrade. Not a huge one but it is an upgrade at the position. Duckett has done well in short yardage. The only thing is we miss the special teams play on kickoffs and returns.

I'd feel better with Wells on the roster.... If we use them in the same manner as we have in the past, and DD goes down, I'd feel better knowing we got Wells. That is, if Morency doesn't shine. Nothing against Duckett, but I think he is definitely a 3rd down back........ only.

I thought Wells would be a great compliment to DD/Bush in Kubiaks system, but since bringing up TJ Duckett, I wouldn't be as down.

I like both backs, but I'd probably pick Vernand Morency if I had to choose one. He seemed to have some explosive potential, and he was fun to watch. I'd like to see us develop him and find out how deep his skills can get.

Wells has elevated his game to about the highest it will ever be. We haven't even scratched the surface of Morency's potential.

Well... Wells highest is pretty good. He is everything you could want in a backup.. and that is what we need, a quality backup.

though morency may still have yet to show us what he's got, he's already 26, this would usually lead me to believe that unless he recieves some significant playing time, his chances of becoming a starting back in the NFL seem to be slipping by. If we get Bush I'm pretty sure Morency will want to search for oppurtunity elsewhere.

:wow: Un-bleievable ... I agree with Grid

Football is the "Ultimate Team Game" ..... I think Wells is as close as this team has to the "Ultimate Team Player" ..... The guy doesnt question what the coaches ask him to do , He just goes out there and gives his best be it backing up DD , spot starting or special teams . :texflag:

Morency doesn't have the wear and tear on him that other 26 year old RB's in the NFL do. He played baseball several years.

I would take wells..

Wells reminds me of a poor man's Mike Anderson if we run Denver's Scheme. I love a 1 cut downhill runner whos looking to wear down a Defense.

Morency would atleast get more value in trade talks due to his upside, However we have a shifty runner in DD and if we get bush then that is our homerun tailback.

Keep Wells, Cheaper nice alternative to the speedy and shifty runners we currently have.

Trade Morency Who can atleast give us another pick at a position of need and vie for more playing time with another team.

I've said it before, if it ain't broke don't fix it. I really don't understand the sense in changing running backs when this is the strongest area of the team. Keep all three.

I'd rather take Wells mostly because he's just more developed. Morency probably has a bigger upside (better athleticism ect.), but I like to have a more consistent and accountable RB in Wells. I don't want to waste time on developing a likely 3rd string RB.

Morency is the only guy with breakaway speed in our current backfield. DD ALWAYS seems to get caught from behind when he breaks into the open. This year when Morency broke for his long TD, he out ran everyone around the corner.
The Texans have done a "decent" job of getting DD into open field but he gets run down from behind ( after a good gain) too many times.
Put R. Bush in our backfield and you see an increase of rushing TD's over 30yds by 50%. I like Davis, but we need to keep the 1 guy who can break the big one and let Wells walk if he wants.
