ive seen a couple Mocks now with us taking Mike Patterson in the second (these are fan mocks.. not "media" mocks) and it made me go look the guy up. This guy could be a good DE for us.

Here are two reports.

that one says he is undersized... not a good word for a 3-4 DE. but look at this one.

Wide body.. unblockable.. 7 sacks.. 55 tackles... bowling ball.. looks interesting to me.
 
I think that Patterson would play the nose in a 3-4 instead of on the end. His shorter stocky body will not be a disadvantage inside. Being short is a liability at DE in this defense, but doesn't matter as much on the nose where you need a good low center of gravity.
 
is he big enough to be a 2 gap lineman though? thats what I would worry about. ive seen him listed as 290 and 285.. that aint 3-4 DT size. he also has short arms it says.

But I still think id be happy if we drafted him.. he SOUNDS like he could be a real player... there has to be SOMETHING we could do with him :P
 
Payne is not really a "natural" 300 pounder (neither Walker or Payne were 300 pounds in College) and is 4 inches taller than him so that means that if he is the same weight he is thicker and wider than Payne. You need good lower body strength, hand strength and a low center of gravity to play a two gap technique. Patterson checked into the Sr Bowl at 5'11" and 290. He will eventually be around 305-315 by the time he fully matures as a finished football product. That is big enough imo
 
At 5-11 290, he sounds more like a 3rd rd prospect. I know he's a great lineman, but a tad undersized makes him more attractive in the 3rd rd.
 
Niners DT Anthony Adams is similar to Patterson in size and style. Adams was drafted in '03 (2nd round - 57th pick) and I'm pretty sure he measured under 6' at the combine. Though not much of a pass rusher, Adams is a pretty good run stuffer and will likely man the NT (along with '04 draftee Isaac Sopoaga) in Mike Nolan's new 34 defense. I'm guessing that if Patterson were selected by the Texans, it would be to play the nose.

Patterson's arms measured at 33.75 inches. The same length as Marcus Spears' arms.

This is just another reason why my eyes start rolling whenever I see an internet scout comment on players' body parts. :rolleyes:
 
:howdy: I would like to say , in my one and only mock draft about a month ago I picked Mike Patterson in the 3rd round . Some of you good people were going " what he's to short " but now he's getting popular . Who were the two best noseguards ? In my opinion Curley Culp and Micheal Carter were the proto-types for this position . Culp 6ft- 1in- 270lbs., Mike Carter 6ft.- 2in- 290 lbs. Carter was a silver medal shotputter in the 1984 olympics . All you young guys need to listen to your elders . Except the ones harping about Tight ends and safetys . :coolb:

Yeah, but Culp and Carter were among the heaviest guys in the NFL when they played. Nate Newton in the late 80's was the first guy to be significantly over 300.
 
I'm thinking Culp was smaller than Mean Joe Green and Ernie Holmes of the Steelers . He was in the middle as far as DL go . He may have been the strongest . Carter the same thing . He was TE in high school . The point is you can't just be fat or I'd play it . You have to be quick . This would allow you to get leverage . :banana:
 
The other thing about Culp his 270 was big back then. Webster of the steelers was no where near 270. Closer to 250, ISTBC. Lotsa of 6-3 wars with those two. Webster is a HOFER isn't he ? The centers now are a lot bigger. Spagoda, that name sounds familliar. That's the one I wanted last year. Maybe Keven Greene ... er Babbin will come around. JMHO.
 
Well, Culp's game was never about size anyway, it was about quickness, balance and intensity. Culp didn't maul people and overpower them with pure size, but was cat-quick for a man of his size (back then). He started playing over the Tackle at KC (in their 4 man line) in their great defense and really started the trend in the NFL to play over the nose (1969 or 1970). Culp should be in the Hall of Fame but I doubt he will ever make it. He was the man in the middle of a Hall of Fame producting Chief D and an outstanding unit in Houston.

mike patterson would be a great pick-up for us in the second round...especially if we don't go d-line if the 1st round...personally i think him and jonathan babineaux would be ideal fits for us
 
I shot an email to a couple of folks who know what they are talking about and they both tell me that Patterson will probably be best suited to a one-gap system and used like Warren Sapp so he can use his quickness to shoot gaps instead of plug multiple gaps in the line.
 
well...... that kinda sucks. Maybe Casserly will see more potential in him.

imo he is a solid second rounder and some feel he could creep into the first. This draft is not deep in dt's, and he was virtually unblockable at the Sr bowl.

I think you're right on with that. He could be the best DT in this years class.
