25. Houston Texans Josh Simmons, OT, Ohio State

Even after giving up 54 sacks in 2024 (tied for third most), Houston traded away its best offensive lineman in left tackle Laremy Tunsil. That's why this pick is easy for me. Simmons has smooth movement traits, and he allowed one sack over 19 starts since shifting to left tackle before the 2023 season.

The only reason I don't have him coming off the board earlier is his knee injury. He went down in October and missed the rest of the season, and he hasn't yet worked out. But once he's healthy, he could step into that LT void and try to turn around the pass protection in Houston.

Kiper's former partner Todd McShay on a recent podcast mentioned that he is hearing that Josh Simmons has "maturity" issues. He said he didn't want to share it even though he just brought it up. I have heard nothing about issues anywhere and could not find it researching other than McShay's comment.
Anyone else hear anything?

Dang, NFL teams are already sending out the fake news snipers. Wish I knew which team so we could trade up ahead of them.

I dunno but maybe it's the Nickster who's dropping the rumors about Simmons being a Tiddy-baby, 'cause Nick is the one who really covets the Buckeye Olineman ?

Hey Lucky thanks for providing us with Kiper's mock.

My man Simmons is there, as are Banks. As I mentioned to Steel, a lot of mocks have Banks there at 25. Why are we trading up to 10? Maybe Mel is way off.

BTW - it's 3/18 not 3/28. Or have you come from the future? I think you will get used to our quaint old-fashioned ways.

I guess I was channeling The Swami.

Simmons will probably get a workout in before the draft, otherwise he’s throwing money out the window.

I believe Simmons and Banks are off the board by 25.

If Simmons (Successful Workout) or Banks are on the board at 25, then I’d take either one and trade up to late RD1 or early RD2 to select LG- Donovan Jackson.

Pairing two of the three sets the left side of the OL for the next 9+ years.

Just before the offensive linemen's on-field workout Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium, Campbell's arm length was measured at 32 5/8 inches. Campbell was measured in at 6-foot-5 7/8, 319 pounds overall and he finished with the fastest 40-yard dash (an official 4.98) among the first group of offensive linemen in the on-field work.

Ooops don't look now, but here's another shorty among this years top rated OTs.

Do you think these guys are day 1 starters, mid-season starters, or December Starters if we're out of playoff contention?

Kiper's former partner Todd McShay on a recent podcast mentioned that he is hearing that Josh Simmons has "maturity" issues.
If you remember, McShay was saying the same things about Jalen Carter, before Carter was involved with the street racing incident that killed a teammate and a Georgia staffer. Carter had numerous traffic tickets due to speeding prior. I don't know what Simmons issues are, but I do believe McShay has inside knowledge.

For me, I'd like to see Blake Fisher get the 1st shot at LT. Had Fisher stayed at Notre Dame, he would have moved to LT and played in the national championship game. Fisher would have been right in the mix with these guys as 1st OT off the board. Fisher's 34-3/8" arms are longer than any of the top OT prospects in the 2025 draft.

Of all the draft insiders, McShay leans on inside information the most (imo) which makes him worth listening to reading. Whenever he gets info that paints the prospect negatively, Todd hesitates so does say anything too specific that crosses the line.
His Sheudar Sanders stuff is all over the place from a couple teams in the top ten hating his interview persona to the Browns maybe locked in on S. Sanders.

I have a question for you guys. I have recently been looking at the combine offensive line players. So y’all know way more than me. Read some of your comments and it seems most think Banks is the LT or RT we need to draft, possibly having to move up to get him. What do you think about drafting Wyatt Milum for RT. Both Banks and Wyatt have said they would be better at guard in the NFL, according to NFL combine tracker review. Do you think Banks is that much better than Wyatt to trade up for?

Yes Banks is that much better.

After looking at Ersery's RAS numbers and watching some of his film, if Caserio doesn't want to move up for Banks then I would pick Ersery at 1-25. His tape is impressive. Carter got the best of him at the beginning of the Penn St. game, but Ersery adjusted and was playing Carter well by the end of that game. Reminds me of Orlando Brown Jr. If you want to improve the run game then draft Ersery he's dominant in this part of the game.

Want to improve the run game then draft these 3 players

1-25 Ersery OT
2. Mason Taylor TE
2. After trading up Milum OG

If Caserio decides to draft a RG and have Tomlinson/Scruggs at LG, then I would draft Tate Ratlege to play RG.

All of these guys bring an attitude to the game and will improve the IQ in the OL room 10 fold.

I'm very hesitant to starting a rookie lineman at LT regardless of the player. The simple reason is that LTs are going against the most elite athletes in all of sports when they are trying to block NFL DEs. And those DEs have honed their technique for getting past you for years. So I'd go December starter (if the games don't matter) or if the current LT is trash.

Jalen Carter was the player I was trying to remember. McShay caught a lot of heat if I recall but it turned out to be true as far as the street racing.

I saw a video Cody Stoots made regarding Simmons and the patellar situation. Although it's supposed to be ahead of schedule, the part that makes me nervous is the data that shows many of these guys never return to 100% of their previous play. I thought he would...now I'm not so sure. He's convinced me to come off of my Josh Simmons love. I am dropping him from my round 1 consideration. If he made it to our choice in the 2nd round...then I'd take the risk. But not at 25.

Of course, Nick and team have way more info than any of us, so if they do draft him, I'll get behind it, but I'd be nervous until I see him play.

Based on Jon Alexander and Aaron Wilson, I think the likelihood of a first-round tackle isn't all that great....unless it's a guy who can play G for a year or two and then take over a tackle spot when Howard splits.

My input, I was huge fan of Wyatt Milum during his days in college. He just got the job done. The issue was he had quite a bit of time off from the end of his season until the bowl week. There he was pushed into reps to use him as a guard but A) he does not want to be a guard and B) I am not sure his body type will allow him to be a guard. However, I do think he could play right tackle if he could get his mind wrapped around it. Oregon's Ajani a pure RT would be a better choice and later in draft.

Most think Banks can play every position except Center and he might be developed into that although it would be a waste of talent in my opinion. Kevin is a pro bowler left tackle in the future. He would probably be even better as a left guard but he would not want that due to the money. One guy I read this morning is starting to doubt Banks as he said the more he got into "Game film the more issues" he discovered. I have not seen that. True, he needs to develop certain things as all players do but I have seen him compared to Skoronski and that isn't bad.

Some see him @1.25 with Simmons higher ; if so, he's my pick with Tytus @ LG or my preference a post June 1st trade bringing a pick + $16 m~ cap relief. *another brilliant move by Caserio to get teams to consider Howard as LT.

Nick has shown that he's not adverse to drafting an injured player. It worked out with Stingley. Not so much with Metchie.

Many OTs can kick inside to OG. The most famous example I can remember is HOFer Jonathan Ogden, who played LG his rookie season before moving to LT and making 11 Pro Bowls.

The Texans current left tackle is only a smell better than trash. Simmons or Banks or even Conerly I would take at left tackle day one.

I feel like the best guy for this is LG/LT- Donovan Jackson (Ohio State). He was a 5 Star Texas HS recruit who was considered the top OG in the nation and he didn’t disappoint at Ohio State. Became a dominant starting LG in 2022 and then surprised everyone when he was forced over to LT due to Simmons injury. He delivered the goods as LT when Ohio State won the CFB Championship this past season. Just pick him at 25 and get this need out of the way.

Milium is of similar size to former Raider Robert Gallery. Gallery was a high draft pick who busted at OT. The Raiders moved Gallery inside to OG, and he had several productive seasons. The Cowboys 90s Super Bowl teams also had a very tall (6'7") OG, but I can't remember his name.

The dice throw: Simmons pre injury was considered by many including myself to be the best left tackle in the draft. Someone is going to take the chance that he will be a Derek Stingley type in recovering from another severe injury that many do not recover from. Yes sting is the exception but man what an exception! Is Simmons that guy? I think so.

Exactly and why I am not putting much worry into McShay comments.
McShay is just reporting what he hears. Some of it, anyway. There's no question Carter's issues caused him to drop in the draft. We don't really know how this might affect Simmons, as he already has injury issues.

Hey Op! What is your opinion on Donovan Jackson? 😄 I agree with your evaluation as I did with you on Emmanwori.

True, but it is the hinting that I dislike. He is in a way messing with a guy's money so if he has something he ought to put it out there; otherwise it's just gossip.

For some reason, Simmons reminds me of Ogden. Man, if that was only true and we got him.

Very good comp. Doesn't look the part of a LT, but gets the job done. A KC native who the Chiefs might be eyeing at 1.31.

If I remember correctly, Gallery did not want to move to guard either and I do think it impacted his mindset as I do think it would Milum.

He is in a way messing with a guy's money
It's in no way messing with Simmons money. The NFL has 10X the info that McShay has.

The move to OG saved Gallery's career. I'm pretty sure he came to terms with it.

This is when I miss Rick Gosselin, former writer for the Dallas Morning News. There were a few years there when is Top 100 is the most accurate in the nation. Admitting to watching no tape, he just had ins with every front office in the NFL and could sift through the smoke screens.

All year long I've been scratching my head why people were trying to trade Tunsil & Howard to fix the OL problem when it was clear to me the problem is on the inside.

I'd be extremely surprised if the Texans draft a Tackle in the first two rounds, why? Because they already have two Tackles the Texans seem to be happy with.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Texans draft two Guards, expecting to start both of them sometime during the season.

Does the Knee scare you? It didn’t for me…but is now.
No but it is a concern that hopefully should be clarified at the medicals before the draft. The Texans will certainly check it out. I am not sure how much was actually presented at the combine but I do know that teams would talk to him.

Because Howard was not that good of a right tackle and I wanted to trade him and the other guy to relieve cap space and get draft picks to fix the entire line. I think there are draft picks at left tackle and left guard that can start day one and offer us overall a better offensive line. Hopefully Howard is the guy but I do not think so.

Signing Robinson means they dont think Howard is the answer at LT. Hopefully this doesn't mean they think he's the answer at LG either.

Kiper's Updated mock (2 rounds)

1. Titans - Cam Ward
2. Browns - Travis Hunter
3. Giants - Abdul Carter
4. Patriots - Will Campbell
5. Jaguars - Mason Graham
6. Raiders - Ashton Jeanty
7. Jets - Armand Membou
8. Panthers - Jalon Walker
9. Saints - Shedeur Sanders
10. Bears - Tyler Warren
11. 49ers - Will Johnson
12. Cowboys - Omarion Hampton
13. Dolphins - Jahdae Barron
14. Colts - Colston Loveland
15. Falcons - Mike Green
16. Cardinals - Matthew Golden
17. Bengals - Jihaad Campbell
18. Seahawks - Kelvin Banks
19. Bucs - Nick Emmanwori
20. Broncos - Tetairoa McMillen
21. Steelers - Derrick Harmon
22. Chargers - Gray Zabel
23. Packers - Mykel Williams
24. Vikings - Donovan Jackson
25. Texans - Josh Conerly
The pass protection really hurt C.J. Stroud and the Houston offense last season. He was sacked 52 times. The Texans began an overhaul of the offensive line this offseason -- including trading away left tackle Laremy Tunsil, the unit's one sure thing. They can't risk wasting another year of Stroud's rookie contract by forcing him to constantly fend for himself against opponent pass rushes. Houston signed Cam Robinson and Trent Brown, but it shouldn't be satisfied. Conerly is consistent, allowing just two sacks over his college career. He'd help keep Stroud clean in the pocket.
26. Rams - Jaxson Dart
27. Ravens - Malaki Starks
28. Lions - Donovan Ezeiruaku
29. Commanders - Shemar Stewart
30, Bills - Maxwell Hairston
31. Chiefs - Josh Simmons
32. Eagles - James Pierce
33. Browns - Tyler Shough
34. Giants - Jalen Milroe
35. Titans - Femi Oladejo
36. Jaguars - Emeka Egbuka
37. Raiders - Carson Schwesinger
38. Patriots - Luther Burden
39. Bears - Walter Nolen
40. Saints - Azareye'h Thomas
41. Bears - TreVeyon Henderson
42. Jets - Elijah Arroyo
43. 49ers - Kenneth Grant
44. Cowboys - Trey Amos
45. Colts - Jonah Savaiinaea
46. Falcons - Benjamin Morrison
47. Cardinals - Tyler Booker
48. Miami - Darius Alexander
49. Bengals - JT Tuimoloau
50. Seahawks - Shevon Revel
51. Broncos - Quinshon Judkins
52. Seahawks - Jayden Higgins
53. Bucs - Nic Scourton
54. Packers - Jack Bech
55. Chargers - Mason Taylor
56. Bills - Tyleik Williams
57. Panthers - Isiah Bond
58. Texans - Jaylin Noel
Noel is an extremely reliable slot target with good hands, elusiveness after the catch and acceleration out of his breaks. The former high school sprinter ran a 4.39-second 40 at the combine and posted some impressive jumps: 41½ inches in the vertical and 11-foot-2 in the broad. Noel also produced last season, with 80 catches for 1,194 yards and eight TDs. Houston lost Stefon Diggs to the Patriots, and Tank Dell's availability is uncertain for 2025 after his December knee injury. This pick could pay off immediately.
59. Ravins - David Walker
60. Lions - Anthony Belton
61. Commanders - Darien Porter
62. Bills - Xaxier Watts
63. Chiefs - Kaleb Johnson
64. Eagles - Kevin Winston

Conerly over Simmons? It's the safer pick. But when has Caserio played it safe?

Noel isn't tall (5'10"). But he comes up with more contested catches than you'd think, like Tank.

The recent mocks cause my head to spin. Seems like most of them have moved some of what i thought were 1st round down to 2nd. Example is Zabel 1st and then they have Tyler Booker mid 2nd. Booker is in my opinion is the best guard and is worthy of 1st rd. If Booker is slding into second I would love a trade up for him.
