was digging through the old HPF.com archives and decided it would serve well to repost this article in the wake of the 2006 Draft.

In the 1983 draft, the Oilers passed on future Hall of Famers John Elway, Eric Dickerson, Jim Kelly and Dan Marino, and yet, it's hard to find fault in their eventual first round selection. That's because the team landed arguably the best, certainly the most versatile and unquestionably the most durable offensive lineman in league history.

Like we said, no regrets.

one can only hope...

The Oilers did't pass on Elway. He was the #1 pick. Oilers were slotted at the #2 pick and traded with the Rams.

O yeah that's true. Hmmm... maybe if I wasn't so lazy I would type them up a memo. LOL

Elway was a different animal anyway... not so sure he would have signed with Houston anymore then he would have signed with the Colts.

The point though is that Houston gave up a handful of "star power" prospects for a lineman in that draft. Interesting to look at nonetheless, because it echoes the same thought stuff that is going down now.

( also they forgot about Darrell Green... sure fire HOFer )

here's another one from Earl

News of the trade made the rounds quickly, and Campbell's impact was immediate, at least locally. After draft day, season ticket purchases soared and for the first time in nearly twenty years, maybe even ever, there was a buzz around town about the Oilers. And in week 8, the rest of the nation was finally introduced to The Tyler Rose of Texas.

I would say this year's draft was the first modern buzz that circled around the draft. I will also say that no matter what your loyalties are to the team, the Texans, that buzz was bit when we passed on Young and then killed when we passed on Bush.

There is some poetic allure to it all, since Dickerson and Campbell were locals and Matthews was a product of USC and born in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Plus Houston needed a Quarterback in 1983, when we had Archie Manning ( from the Saints ) and thought Gifford Nielson ( 5 years ) and Oliver Luck was our future. You can even toss Darrell Green ( Texas A&I ) in for the Michael Huff tie in.

Ahhh the art and science of football. When does reading and keying on pattern recognition cross the line from normalcy into the realm of shear madness? ...in a Nash Jr kind of way.
