Matt Stevens a Fantsay Sleeper?

I notice in like 2 of the 3 leagues I am in (maybe all I did not check one) Matt Jonesis a Free Agent. I was wondering how Jags fan felt about this because isnt he suppose to be the #2 WR? Maybe I am wrong but if he is SOOOOOOO great than people should be picking him. I think Mark Clayton (Ravens pick right after the Jags) is on a team in every leauge. VERY VERY INTERSTING!

I had to check this out when I saw the name...Matt Stevens was our abysmal FS in 2002/early 2003. You're thinking of Matt Jones.

It shouldn't be a surprise that he is a FA. He's a great athlete but at this point he's proven nothing at a position considered to be one of the most difficult to adjust to. (One he's never played before unless it was prior to college)

I think Matt Jones may be a solid red zone target due to his size and leaping ability as the year goes on. I've wanted to take him real late in some of my redrafts so I could stash him, but I don't see him in the yahoo drafts. Not sure why.

Not sure. A buddy of mine has a friend who is trying to make the Jets team. He signed a contract for the camp but he is not draftable in yahoo.

The sheer physical dimensions are more than enough to stash him like you say but I don't know how much he will get done this first season in total points.

If he can learn to catch the ball in traffic he could be a nightmare for CBs of any size in the short passing game. Even with a 35-40 inch vertical it's extremely difficult for a CB to cover someone 6+ inches taller than them.

This is unrelated to fantasy but if he develops in the technical aspects of a WR, what's the best way to defend against him? There's probably no bumping him at the line, and few corners are over 6'2" and most are under 6'0". Not to mention he ran under a 4.4 so running with him will be hard enough as it is. Would the Texans (or any other division team) look at a specialist DB with good height? Ex. Browner or someone similar? I'm not confident Robinson or Buchanon have any chance to stop him from catching a well thrown ball.

I wouldn't be too worried about DRob being able to cover him. Many point to the height advantage. Jones is 6'6" and there are plenty of receivers in the league already that are 6'5". Drew Bennett comes to mind, and we face him twice a year already. Jones has a bigger learning curve than most other WRs coming into the league. He has significantly less experience at getting open, route running, positioning, etc. than any of the other first round WRs. He has alot of talent, and he seems to have the tools to be a big target in the redzone. Size and speed are great, but early on I think the advantage goes to the experienced CB as opposed to the rookie QB/WR. I, for one, like our chances in a matchup of Jones against DRob/Buchanon/ or Faggins. Especially if we're able to have help in the form of Coleman or Earl over the top.

That's true about Bennett but he also doesn't run a 4.37.

I've generally been in the crowd discounting height as a major factor in the regular passing game (as opposed to route running, seperation etc as Vinny said) but for some reason I just have nightmares of our 5'10" CBs covering someone 8 inches and 60 lbs heavier. I agree Coleman could see a lot of coverage in his direction, it's too bad we don't have more FS depth so that Coleman could possibly come in as a CB in some situations.

Damn, I feel like some sort of worried mother. I need the season to start ASAP.

How can you confuse Matt Jones for Stevens?!?!?!?

Jones is one of the best athletes ever to be drafted... and Stevens is one of the worst athletes I've seen play in the NFL...

I'm not too worried about our depth at FS. We've got Coleman, Simmons (CB/S), Sanders(CB/S), and Lord. I haven't seen much of Sanders since he was with the Browns, but from everything I hear he hold his own in coverage. Lord looked good in what little we saw of him during the preseason last year, and I think a year on the PS and time with the Texans coaches will do him alot of good. I'm really hopeful that he'll make major strides this season, and make the final 53 man roster. I'd love to see how he performs as a special teams player. Besides imagine all the fun we'll have saying things like "The LORD is good!" or "Good Lord what a tackle!" when he makes a play. Training camp will begin soon, and we'll all get a sneak peek at what our team will look like in 2005. Then comes preseason, and then comes the regular season (I agree that it can't come soon enough).

I hope Lord can make strong progress as well. I think the coolest thing would be having "Lord" and "Earl" in the S positions. I'm sure some sort of nickname could be invented for them even if they are never Pro-Bowl material.

Earl of Sussex (Strong-side), Lord of Wessex (Weak-side). We even have 'Robin'son which could fit in there somewhere. Buchanons will take a little more creativity..but there's still a lot of time to waste.
