Matt Cassell could opt out of contract

One of the first decisions of the offseason will come in Minnesota this week. Ben Goessling of ESPN.com*points out that*quarterback*Matt Cassel*has until Friday to decide whether or not to void his contract with the Vikings for the 2014 season. If Cassel does void it, he will become a free agent. If not, the Vikings will have until the seventh day of the new league year in March to either pay Cassel a $500,000 roster bonus or let him go.Cassel is set to make $3.7 million in total salary next season, which is the same he made in 2013 to back up*Christian Ponder. Cassel wound up doing more than that as the quarterbacks shuffled through three different starters, however, and could be in position to start for at least part of next season as well if the Vikings draft a quarterback.

If Cassell opts out, I think he ends up back with O'Brien. This might allow the Texans to go with a rawer QB prospect lick Bortles and let him watch for a year or so.

I think Cassell would be a great pick up for the Texans. Everyone is always pointing out how they don't want another #8 and Cassell wears #16 so he'd obviously have all the combined success of both David Carr and Matt Schaub.

Of course.

I am sure it was much more subtle though, "hi this is Rick Smith, just wanted to make sure you have my number in case any of your clients want to compete for the QB, RT or ILB spots in Houston. Have a good one."

Yep. Nothing wrong with a GM talking to an agent. Happens all the time. Just keeping a finger on the pulse of the team.
