Mathis or Randel El

I am pretty excited about what Mathis may do and was just wondering if anybody sees him in the mold of Randel El. I guess because they are both multi-dimensional, smallish, and lower on the depth chart that they seemed comparable. Midsummer speculation but does this sound reasonable? Who would you rather want for the long-term and now.
 
Randle El because he has atleast proven that he can play in this league.

We still don't know what production to expect from Mathis yet.
 
hall i would prefer dante hall but between these two mathis i have a special feeling about him

Gaffney catches just about anything thrown his way, had one of the highest first down completion percentages in the league, and also led the team in YPC. Not to mention he had the longest reception, which I don't have in front of me but I believe is correct.

You can't expect a slot player to put up Pro Bowl numbers as far as total yardage etc, so I don't think you have any valid reasons to dog Gaffney. He's been a very solid player when Carr has thrown his way.
 
Gaffney has done really well in the slot. If Bradford can't get the job done, Gaffney just might be the #2 WR and then move into the slot in 3 WR sets.

Mathis will hopefully be able to contribute right away returning kicks and punts. He will probably need a year or two to get up to speed playing WR at the NFL level, so I wouldn't expect much from him on offense this year.
 
I see very few similarities between Jerome and Antwaan. They are both small, correct. But Mathis is a burner, and Twan isn't. Antwaan can shake anyone in his way, and I've never heard that about Mathis.

dude, all you have to do is watch him...I saw Mathis in the Gridiron Classic, and on the reverse that he took about 40 yds for the TD, he made the defensive players look like they were incapable of even touching him much less tackling him.

He reminds me more of Dante Hall than Randel El. Not only is he blazing fast, he has the moves of the human joystick to go along with it. I can't wait to see him on the field as a Texan. He is going to be exciting. I loved to watch JJ Moses, but he ain't got nothing on Mathis. :drool:

these were division I players for the most part...he was one of only a few small school players in that game. All I have to say is "Wait and see for Yourself".
 
Randle El is was a Quarterback with running back skills converted to a WR. Mathis is a burner with sprinter speed.
 
Although I have never seen Mathis play, I hope he can fit into the WR corps and start playing ASAP
 
As long as they put the ball in his hands, I'm happy.

I think that he's going to be one of our most dangerous weapons everytime he touches the ball.........the only guy that would scare opposing defenses more would have to be AJ, other than that Mathis has to be the next dangerous.
 
I haven't seem him play in an actual game, but I did see a package of highlights, and Dante Hall immediately came to my mind as well. Don't be suprised to see him on reverses, and trick plays in additon to KO's and maybe punts. It remains to be seen how much we will see him in the 3 or 4 WR package, but I suspect he will be on the outside looking in to start with....but I won't be suprised to see him pushing for PT as the season progresses. He is raw with a ton of upside. Let's see if Kippy can mold him into the type of player his physical ability suggests is possible. I'm very excited about having him on the team, and think he will add a new dimension to the return game we have never had ....breakaway speed! :highfive:

Randle El isn't a burner? i think im gonna have to call u on that one. and also, unrelated, i'm pretty sure mathis is a good bit faster than dante hall
 
Let's hope he can stay healthy during the pre-season, He'll probably get tons of time and go out his way to get that 3 or 4 spot as well as KR/PR.
 
Randle El is the easy choice in my opinion. The guy makes big plays for the Steelers, he's a proven playmaker. And he's shown he has what it takes to make people look stupid even in the NFL. Mathis didn't even play the top college level players so, although I am very excited to see what he does for us in the NFL, there's no way you'd get many teams to choose him over Randle El.
 
I won't compare the two just b/c I think I'm hoping for Mathis to develop into a #2 WR to start opposite of AJ.

The first year he might resemble Randle El or Hall as far as special teams goes but that's about as far as i take the comparison.
 
If you listened to the Dunta Robinson interview when he said this kid blew past him in mini-camp and how he went to the offensive coordinator to say this kid needs to be on the field....and if you respect Dunta as an all-pro corner as I do...you need to know or hear nothing else. For the most part you can tell as a player who will be dynamic as a football player. Just sit back and enjoy because he does have skills. i was willing and wanting the Texans to take this kid in the third round as well. we have a diamond in the rough...he reminds me of glenn earl in the since that he was a fourth round pick with 2nd round talent. That's top 60 players in the draft.
