Mario still the prototype at DE

Consider the most highly regarded ends in the 2007 draft class: The average height and weight of the 12 ends cited most often by league scouts to ESPN.com as worthy of being taken in the first two rounds is 6-4 1/8 and 268.3 pounds, according to measurements recorded at the combine. Seven of the 12 are at least 6-foot-4 and four of those are 6-foot-5 or taller. At the same time, six weigh less than 270 pounds and only two, Jamaal Anderson of Arkansas and Nebraska's Adam Carriker weigh more than 285pounds.
Of the eight ends who participated in the bench press segment of the combine, five were able to post 25 or more repetitions of the standard 225-pound weight. More notable, though, was that five of the eight who were timed in the 40-yard dash were clocked at 4.70 seconds or faster, reinforcing the notion that, even at end, it's a sprinter's game.
Little wonder that Carriker, whose huge frame stretches to 6-foot-6, is rapidly moving up the draft boards of teams that deploy in 4-3 and 3-4 fronts. Carriker is a two-way perimeter defender, who is equally effective anchoring against the run or chasing the quarterback. At the combine, where Carriker weighed 296 pounds, he registered a solid 33 repetitions on the bench press but still ran a 4.90 time in the 40.

Atleast when it comes to measureables, he's better than anything out there in the 2007 Draft and probably anything in any Draft since Peppers came out
in 2002. But this is an interesting artice by ESPNs Pasquarelli about the need to find a big and athletic DE. Still very much one of the premier type players
in the NFL.
But its easy to see how the Texans and other teams got excited about Mario after his Indy combine, if he just shows us some production on the field that's equivalent those measureables.

I agree ... Mario's numbers are off the chart .

I think Bush and VY looked better last year but I would'nt be surprised if Mario passes them next year .

Mario Williams is 1" taller @ 6070, same weight 295, ran a 4.70 not a 4.90, benched 225lbs 35 reps to carrikers 33, vertical 40.5" compared to 33.5", broad jumped 10' to carrikers 9'2".

when talking measureables Mario is still heads & shoulders above any DE including even Mr. Peppers, y'all need to get your facts straight & quit providing disinformation about Mario not being this or not being that :sos:

Mario Williams is a freak compared to any of the DE's that are coming out this year. He's bigger, taller, stronger, and only Gaines Adams ran faster 4.64 compared to 4.70 for MW.

Even if we wouldn't have taken him, I'm 99.9% certain the Saints would have taken him at #2.

there was two things this past season that held mario williams back...one we tried to move him across the d-line so much it made him think more than attack...second his injury

if the coaching staff gives him one position next year and allows him to find himself in that one position i think the only thing that can hold him back is another injury...crossing my fingers that he stays healthy all year long

mario is going to be awesome and i'm really looking forward to what he's going to do during his career. 4.5 sacks on a bummed foot and both tonails removed before the season...was moved to every position along the line...never really got settled down till midseason.

if he can do 4.5 sacks under those circumstances..think about when he's healthy, playing strictly DE, and has better players around him.

that's strictly stats speaking...not talking about how dominant he will be against the run and force their O to mess things up.

If we can get our secondary sorted out and if we can get a solid pass rusher on the d-line with Mario we will see something special happen from our Super Mario :yahoo:

I think that will help a lot.

so far in the offseason we've go FA's in RB,OL,DL,LB
-havn't addressed QB, WR, or Secondary.

I think secondary is a big hole seeing how Dunta is a true starter...i like earl, but CC and fagins man oh man...we can't keep the same people there. it hasn't been addressed in FA and doubt it will so i expect it to in the first day of the draft.

it will be really interesting to see what happens come draft day. Quinn is a popular choice, i don't see a WR worth our 8 overall pick, and then comes secondary that needs help. I could see Quinn in the first, WR in the 2nd, and Secondary in the 3rd?? but i think if we really want our D to be better we need a stud Secondary guy..like landry in the 1st...that will help our DL have more time to get to the QB.

carriker is the closest match physically. but williams outshines him there pretty easily.
