April 25, 2005) ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions announced today that they have released WR Az-Zahir Hakim and S Brock Marion. The team also announced that they have signed free agent DT Brandon Kennedy to a one-year deal. No additional contract terms were disclosed.

Hakim (5-10, 185) signed with the Lions March 7, 2002. He finished the 2004 season second on the team with 533 receiving yards despite missing four games due to injury. In 2003, Hakim returned from a hip injury suffered in 2002 and was the Lions' leading receiver in yards and touchdowns (449 yards; four touchdowns). He has 265 receptions for 3,555 yards and 26 touchdowns while playing in 92 games (37 starts) in seven NFL seasons. Hakim was originally drafted in the fourth round (96th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams.

Marion (5-11, 200) joined the Lions prior to last season, signing with the team March 25, 2004. He finished second on the squad with 112 total tackles and three interceptions while starting all 16 games for Detroit in 2004. Before joining the Lions, Marion spent six seasons (1998-03) with the Miami Dolphins and was named to the AFC Pro Bowl squad three times (2000, 2002-03). Marion was originally selected in the seventh-round (196th overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, where he was a part of two Super Bowl Championship teams. He has 1,133 career tackles (774 solo) and has played in 182 games (154 starts) in 12 NFL seasons.

Hakim being let go isn't much of a surprise. They've got Rogers, M. Williams, R. Williams, and Johnson. I believe ihategeeks has mentioned several times that Hakim is their highest paid WR, but I may be wrong. Either way they've got plenty of WRs to spare.

I really doubt we'd have interest in either Marion or Hakim. We already have Coleman at FS, and I really don't remember us making a serious run at Marion last offseason when the Fins released him. As far as Hakim as a KR I think we've got plenty of competition for that spot. Moses isn't likely to make the squad this year. If I'm remembering correctly it was Drummond who was the KR for the Lions last season, but I could be wrong. Either way I think we're better off without Hakim or Marion.

Drummond had 4 returns for TD's before going on IR, he almost broke that record , why is it so hard to get 5 in a season! yesssh.

Hakim was cut because he has no spot on the roster anymore, and he was stealing money. Az also is a guy that fumbles on Kick returns. Hakim was set to make about 2.5 mil this year, and 4 million next year. Now in 07, we have more cash to resign Rogers with. (assuming we don't resign him before)

Marion....good god, the only play he made all year was a pass that was thrown right at him standing still.

I once randomly decided to count all the plays that he screwed up on. in one game he was responsible for 12 bad plays. I think I was counting in the last game of the year. He is done. I wouldn't be surprised if he just retires.
