Matt Lienart, the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from USC, is considering entering his name in the supplemental draft, according to The New York Post. Leinart, a junior, would have certainly have been selected early in the first round of this years regular draft had he declared. Indeed, he was the favorite to go number one overall.

Wouldnt they have the first pick in the supplemental draft as well? Maybe go Benson or Williams with the first pick and the pick up Leinart in the Supplemental draft.

Lienart is clearly manipulating the system, in a negative way, if he does this. If I were the NFL I'd conduct an investigation into tampering by one of the teams with a top ten pick.

I am not sure... My initial reaction is Leinhart said he was going to stay and as of last week Chow decided to leave USC to go to the Titans.. Leinhart doesn't have the same OC. I am not sure if that is a deciding factor or not.. I know some kids feel "cheated" when they stay with a college because they like the coach... then after all the declarations are over.. the coach leaves..

That was my inital reaction on this situation.. could be way off base.

My understanding is he is not eligible for the supplemental draft. For some reason such as academics, etc. you have to be ineligible to play college ball to be eligible for the supplemental draft.

Ultimately, if a player was no longer eligible to play on the college level and missed the deadline for the NFL Draft, he could be picked here.

The NFL has done that 27 times for players who were no longer eligible to play on the college level but missed the deadline for the draft.

As a practical matter something like that has to be the rule otherwise many of the top candidates would opt out of the regular draft to avoid being taken by the worst team--such as Eli Manning last year.
