Kubiak not sold on Bush yet???

I was reading this article from today's Chronicle, & while he says a lot of positive things about Bush, there's this one little blurb that caught my attention. It makes me wonder if he's leaning toward another player & is just looking for a reason to pass on Bush. I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into it.

LOS ANGELES -- Even if Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio wanted to return to his alma mater to watch Southern California stars work out for NFL scouts today, he'd pass. He doesn't need one more reminder of how difficult it will be to game-plan against Reggie Bush.

"I figure I'll get to see Reggie Bush plenty this year," Del Rio said at last week's league meetings. "Twice a year is plenty."

Del Rio isn't the only one who figures it's a foregone conclusion the Texans will select Bush with the No. 1 pick in the April 29-30 draft. Del Rio is simply dreading it more than most, because the Jaguars and Texans are AFC South foes.

The Texans insist they're not ready to start marketing Bush's jersey to their fans, but it's clear he is in the forefront of their minds, along with Texas quarterback Vince Young.

Coach Gary Kubiak and general manager Charley Casserly had dinner with Bush at a Beverly Hills restaurant on Saturday and will watch today's workout, Bush's first for NFL scouts and personnel.

Kubiak has analyzed every game Bush and Young played over the past two years.

"I've watched (each game) more than once," Kubiak said. "Every day I start to question myself about one thing or another. I just start over again."

Bush will hardly be the only attraction at USC's pro day. Quarterback Matt Leinart and running back LenDale White, two of the Trojans' other first-round prospects, did not work out at the NFL scouting combine but will do so today.

Bush will be the sole focus of the Texans, though. He won the Heisman Trophy for a junior season in which he helped lead the Trojans to the national championship game against Texas. On 187 rushing attempts, he gained 1,658 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. He also caught 31 passes for 383 years and two touchdowns.

For his three-year career, Bush finished in 10th place in NCAA Division I-A history with 6,551 all-purpose yards.

"I like his versatility," Kubiak said. "Having a player you can line up all over the place presents a problem for the defense. He can return and catch, and we all know he runs well."

Bush's presence and composure off the field have been studied just as diligently by the Texans. They interviewed him at the combine in February and will set up a time for him to visit their offices at Reliant Stadium in the coming weeks.

"I think he's a quality young man. He's so sharp," Kubiak said. "One of the things I ask kids is where they see themselves in a couple of years. I don't want to go through his answer with y'all - that's between me and him. But I was very impressed with what his expectations are with himself."

Even though Bush's 40 time will be one of the numbers scrutinized by everyone watching the workout, Kubiak will have his eyes on much more.

"I just like spending time around the kids, seeing how they interact with their teammates, how they interact in that format," Kubiak said. "There is some pressure. You've got everybody from the league standing around watching them work, how they handle themselves, the type of kids they are. I take a lot of stock in that, more so than the workout."

How did you come away that he was talking about Young when he said that. Also the part that you highlighted really had no relevance, because every coach has questions. He didn't specify which players he had questions about or any other subject.
 
There is no doubt in my mind that if Kubiak didn't think we already had a good QB in Carr that he would want to draft VY.
 
Kubiak on Young: Just as impressive
Before he was done, he made throws across his body and to every part of the field. Perhaps just as impressive is that with every eye focused on him and him alone, he performed with poise and grace and humor.

''Grandma, I'm tired!" he yelled to his family members at one point.

He declined to throw at the NFL scouting combine last month, so this was the first time some teams had seen Young in an informal setting. He brought along some of his favorite UT receivers, including tight end David Thomas, for an additional level of comfort.

There are millions of dollars riding on workouts like this one. Young almost certainly will be one of the top 10 picks in the NFL draft, but each slot is worth both cash and endorsements.

''This was more pressure than the Rose Bowl," said Jerry Rhome, the former NFL assistant coach who is serving as Young's personal tutor.

Well, not quite.

This was only the next step leading up to the draft.

''You like to see how he conducts himself with all these people, how he interacts and all of that," Kubiak said. ''How he handled that workout was pretty impressive. He's got a great personality. You can tell he has a blast playing the game."

What can't be measured
Young is revered at Texas for things scouts can't measure.

While I like the possibilities that Young presents & would be very happy if we selected him, I've got to admit that there is no way I can see the Texans taking him, with Carr on the roster. Now, having said that, if the Texans have a deal on the table to trade Carr, then it's a whole new ballgame.

I know that the majority of the fans are in love with Bush, but imagine Young with his ability to run & pass with such accuracy on the run, at QB. He'd take the Denver style of offense to a whole other level.

With Young's passing accuracy on the run & great receiving threats like AJ, Moulds, Putzier, & DD out there, the safeties, CB's, & LB's couldn't possibly cheat up to contain Young. Who would they game plan for?

While Bush might bring another dimension to the team, we'll have to get the ball into his hands first & that won't happen every time. Whereas, Young will have the ball in his hands on every play.

I read somewhere on this board that Denver's zone blocking scheme doesn't really protect the QB very well. Thus, a QB as mobile, fast, & accurate passing on the run as Young is, would be the ideal QB for that style of offense.

Personally, I'd prefer D'Brick, Mario, or Vernon Davis, but Young would be a very interesting pick none the less.

Actually, he did. The whole article was about Bush, Young, & who the Texans are going to take with the #1 pick. If they still haven't made up their minds after USC's Pro Day, then the selection of Bush at #1 is up for question.

Thank you that was exactly what I was getting at. He didn't say anything specifically.
 
Alotta Kubiak draft talk in today's paper. I found the Herskowitz anecdote about Elway interesting. Here's what I see as the remaining variables:

1. Bush is gonna tear it up at his Pro-Day, on the track and in the weight room.
2. Kubiak is still bristling at the thought of paying 75 million for two backs with some overlapping abilities (not power runners, great receivers out of the backfield). Reggie's value as a "need" player has diminished with the Moulds and Walter acquisitions. Between AJ, Cook, DD, Moulds, Putzier, Walter, and potentially Mathis, there are plenty of receivers and breakaway threats.
3. VY does have a chance to really impress them with his private workout, maybe give Kubiak some of that awe he felt when watching Elway up close.
4. Kubiak's true feelings about Carr; he said he's watched tons of tape now. His public statements may be true or the right thing to say or he may still have significant questions/concerns.

I think you must be confused. Because as everyone knows, whenever something good is said about Bush and Young, Kubiak or Casserly are obviously referring only to Young and when ever something bad is said about Bush and Young, they are referring to Bush.
 
How long before we hear some pro day updates ??? NFL Network is showing Old games & NFL Europe all day:brickwall

I like that quote by Del Rio as to why he isn't going to the USC pro day.


How is this any different for what Kubiak has been saying for the past few months? Usually every single time he is asked about the draft he says that he likes both players and that it will be a tough decision that will require a lot of research and work.

I'm sure after this workout we will hear about how great Reggie Bush is, just like we heard how great Vince Young was after his workout.

You Bush only fans crack me up. I never said it wasn't about Young also. I just didn't include Young in the title, because all the media & all of the Bush only fans have made it a foregone conclusion that the Texans will take Bush (not Young) with the #1 overall pick. However, this article, with direct quotes from Kubiak, indicates that he's still not sold on Bush. Re-read the entire article before you jump to conclusions.

And, oh yeah, I hear that Bush is a whiney cry baby that can't take a hit, play an entire game, run up the middle, out run a UT linebacker, play during crunch time, & he didn't show up in the biggest audition game for the Pros. There, you happy now? :stirpot:

Obviously, I'd try to trade down first. If we don't get Moulds, I'd draft him & play him as my #2 WR.

Of course not. However, until he's on the team, you might want to change that to "if", rather than "when".
 
Kubiak verbalizes some reservations with Bush prior to meeting with him and witnessing the USC pro-day. Afterwards he gushes about Bush and it's all but locked up that Bush will be the Texans' #1 selection. Watch.
