That said, how a guy with 3 sacks his last college season goes #1 overall should be a strong candidate for dysfunction I would think. Especially with some of the numbers Mack and Donald had.

Like QB, it takes more than 1 player. The Raiders never had much defensively while he was there. The Bears were already pretty decent, 9th/pts, 10th/yards in '17, going to 1st and 4th in points, 3rd and 8th in yards his 1st 2 seasons there. And he had help in Chicago with several Pro Bowlers and a few All Pros.

Next to JJ in '15, who knows? The Texans were already 3rd defensively that year. In '16 without JJ they were #1. In '18, another big JJ season, every single one of their losses was 7 points or less, except the playoff game, of course. Does Mack help them win a couple of those games, maybe getting them a bye that year? In '19 does he help make it only 35-7 instead of 51-7? That would have least given them a shot at the end.

In the end, I don't really think it makes much difference when you see how the team was slowly being dismantled by OB. No matter who you draft, you still have to have competent leadership. Leadership with a vision, with a plan, with an idea of the value of talent and draft compensation of said talent. That certainly wasn't the case for the Texans as more of the power shifted to OB.

I may just be the exception? Eternalizing Texans drafts, post and future the most futile endeavor imaginable. In the very end, for me, was Donald vs Mack discussion, and early to almost the end was addressing OL (Greg Robinson). That lesson learned, has influenced my personal draft process and boards since. Mack & Donald have both won NFL Defensive Player of the year.

We saw impact and importance Donald had for the Rams winning Super Bowl. Still supreme player, and Mack basically had year off for surgery and rehab so he has every opportunity to return to form. His contract, has Lucky mentioned, has no guarantees. The Bears are on the hook for 24 million dead money. Staley OLB coach for Chicago in 2017-18 instrumental turning that Bear defense into #1 defense after bringing over Mack. This reunion will be of epic proportions, a big piece helping turn a bottom 5 defense into a top 5 defense in one year.

If that isn’t elevating I don’t know what is or how you rationalize otherwise.

say all that to say this, not anyone player other than a true franchise QB can elevate a team. Great as an individual player maybe, you shouldn’t knock him down. There are too many factors to consider. Obviously Donald had a huge impact for the Rams, but even with Floyd, it didn’t all come together as unstoppable force until they added Von Miller. It’s a copycat league, Chargers are just following suit.

JJ couldn’t get past divisional round here either and he was better than both. The problem with the deck being stacked so much in favor of offenses.

This is the biggest question/hole of the offseason. Nobody knows for sure. 13 free agents and not one RT and none drafted.

Writing on the wall for Tillery. He’s been a bust first round Telesco pick who doesn’t fit Staley’s defense. Rotational inside pass rusher who could get traded for RT early in the season would be my guess.

Texans drafted the Baylor Money Safety Chargers drafted the Baylor Dime Safety. Both excellent, rare players, of course Derwin James is the Chargers Money Safety. Bosa has needed opposite edge rusher since Melvin Ingram got hurt, then released. Teams will no longer be able to double/triple team him with Mack. JC Jackson gives them a true #1 outside CB.
Callahan, if healthy or rotates in the slot. Lot of proven Staley defenders picked up cheap @ LB, DE, DT where they needed to stop the run. Pointing to the Texan game where Rex Burkhead ran through and over them as we both witnessed.

Seriously your probably right him or Pipkins will fight it out in camp to least start season @ RT just not real comfortable feeding Norton to Max Crosby in season opener. So maybe for just this one special match-up they let Feiler maul Crosby instead of other way around?
