KFFL: Saints "definitely trading out of #2 spot"

bad

Waterboy
Saints | Team to trade out of No. 2 slot; seeking defensive help?
Sat, 1 Apr 2006 12:42:10 -0800
According to FOXSports.com's John Czarnecki, the New Orleans Saints are definitely trading out of the second spot in the NFL Draft, and they are looking for a defensive player.

Funny, I thought Mario Williams WAS a defensive player.

Hmmmm. Wouldn't it be something to have both the #1 AND #2 overall picks AND STILL NOT DRAFT VINCE YOUNG?

Seriously, the chances of the Texans getting that Godfather trade offer for the #1 overall pick just went from slim to Kate Moss. Nice poker face, Charley.

What makes you think that? Alot of teams would rather jump up to #1 and get their man, rather than let some other team up up to #1 and take their guy.

Its a roll of the dice. Do I wait and see if the texans trade the pick to another team, and then trade with the saints, or do I just trade with the texans to make sure I get my man.

Houston is wanting the trade of a life time seeing as Reggie Bush is a once in a Life Time player, noone is willing to give us what we want. It's all about the No. 1 Overall pick, it's who wants Reggie the most and right now it's HOUSTON

Well, for one thing everyone knows it'll take a monstrous sacrifice to get Houston to trade their pick. New Orleans is openly shopping the #2, which gets you any player except for Reggie Bush.

Worst-case scenario: someone blows the doors off Houston with a deal they can't refuse and takes your QB prospect out from under you. You wind up with the best prospect in years, and at a #2 price tag. I imagine you could trade down from there, still get the #2 QB on your board and some extra picks, or just keep Reggie Bush (poor you).

It's a better risk/reward ratio at a better price tag to go for #2, where you have your choice of every player except for one, and you're pretty sure who that one will be.

not really.

Its not just the position where you draft, but also what your needs are and especially the most important thing, what the needs of the team below you.

We held all the cards when the league was 100% positive that New Orleans was going to take a QB at #2 and since we weren't, they knew they could simply trade up to us and grab the QB of their choice.

Now the league is 100% positive the Tenn. is going to grab a QB at #3 and they know New Orleans isn't, so they know if they want the QB of their choice they can simply trade up to #2 and grab one.

Now when you think on the fact that the #2 pick is more appealing, because its cheaper and with all the offseason moves so far, there really isn't going to be too many teams willing to trade up to that spot, so there's not going to be a biding war of teams trying to leap frog each other.

The day the Saints signed Brees the value of our picked dropped tremendously.

what this means is that there have to be atleast 2 teams wanting to jump forward, or atleast 1 team that's afraid of that scenario. right now the owners are mingling and feeling eachother out during the meetings. they're trying to guage how strong the interest is in different scenarios, not necessarily trying to influence deals, but trying to gather as much information as possible. if team A is dead set on a trade, and thinks that B & C are also trying actively to move up, we'll get calls. if A thinks noone else is going to be big players moving up, they're going straight to the saints. new orleans is going to get offers either way, but for us to get offers there needs to be plenty of competition.

i agree with tulexan, the saints are looking at hawk, and as i said before, have been since signing brees.

IMO, this makes it MORE likely that a team who wants specific player would get worried and put in an offer for the one pick to get ahead of anyone who might be trading into the 2 spot and might grab their guy. We won't be getting any trade offers unless someone gets worried about what another team is doing and how bad they want a specific guy. Kind of good that this sort of rumor is now out there, might make a team or two start to sweat.

You could kill the Saints bargaining power if you put the word out to teams that what ever they are offering the Saints come to us with it and there is a very good chance we will take it. That is if the Texans really want to trade down. The worst thing that could happen is we say no. Why not go fishing?

I think you said it yourself. I think the Texans don't really want to trade down.

Unless we're witnessing one of the all-time great smoke screens, The Texans know who they want and are in position to take him so they may as well sit back, enjoy, and work out the contract details.

Of course, something could always happen that changes everything. Something like a Hershel Walker mortage-the-farm deal. IMO that's what it's going to take to get Reggie away from Houston.

One possible scenario that could involve an offer to us, would be the following:

Jets offer NO #4 & #29 + change for the #2 to get QB of their choice, which happens to be Lineart. However, TEN really wants Matt to be McNair's replacement and makes an offer to NO, but can't compare with NYJ offer. So if TEN could then convince us to move to #3 for that pick and 2nd this year and maybe 1st in '07.

This would leave NO with the choice of Bush, trade down still or someone else. Imagine if they took Mario or Hawk and we could still get Reggie! Perhaps I'm dreaming, but strange scenarios can happen on draft day.

Would/should we do it?

i've heard of stranger "possible" senerios on draft day, but i wouldn't hold my breath. NO trades thier pick to a #5,6 team, pick up a D palyer and whoever trades up gets the QB they want. We still take reggie, Leinhart still goes 2nd and everything is hunky dorey.

Douh....I finally get it.
Owning the #1 pick in the draft is a bad thing, we would be better off owning the #2 pick.

The only time number 2 is the best pick is after the Texans have officially picked. Until then the Texans are in the drivers seat. No team can trade up with New Orleans before our pick is official and be sure they get their man. All this talk about New Orleans being in the drivers seat at #2 is pure crap. IMHO if the Texans really want to trade down then they will have no problem doing so. I'm just not so sure they do.

Think about it. If the #2 pick was the pick to have then the Texans would just offer to swap with New Orleans for free or give up one of our 3rds for it. Enough already.

Why would a team trade up to #1 when they could trade to #2 by giving up the same thing? That means that they have to pay more money for the guy then they would if they dealt with the Saints.

I give up.

IF the Jets want the #2 Pick they should offer #4,#29, and #97 which would two first rounders and a fourth rounder.

If the Jets want the #1 pick they should offer us #4, #29, and #35 which would be two first rounders and a second.

If Tenessee want the #2 Pick they should offer #3 and #39 for #2 and #99 which would be a First and Second for a First and Fourth

If Tenessee wants the #1 Pick they shoulf offer us #3, #39, and next years Second round pick

Sounds like a nice plan and it was definitely one I was hoping for a while back, but the Titans have also said (according to what I heard on ESPN radio a couple days ago) that they don't intend to trade up because they can get a good QB at #3.

Because someone may trade up to number 1 to get the player the team traded to number 2 to get maybe?

Uh......When did I say having the #1 pick in the draft is a bad thing

I was speaking about the prospect of trading the pick and the moves that NO made drastically hurt our trade down efforts and the value we'll get for trading the pick.

All you have to do is look at last years draft when SF held the #1 pick.

Everybody in the country knew they wanted to move it, but yet they couldn't and in the same round many teams were able to move down (like us for example), why do you think that is, it's because there is alot of scrutiny and moving up to that spot and it doesn't happen very often.

It is beyond me why people think just because we have the #1 pick we will be able to move it.

In order to trade down you have to have a partner, because it takes two to tangle.

The only way we are going to move this pick is to take a bad deal and not equal value and all that is going to do is cause a uproar on this board and make us a laughing stock around the league.

I'm sorry, but after this FA somebody either breaks the bank and gives us good value or we stay put.

Last year, Every one knew 49ers wanted a QB....there were only two worthy of first round selection...Smith and Rogers. There was less demand for QB in 2005;unlike this year....plus you have 3 quality QBs in Leinert,Young, and Cutler.

Agree, it won't be easy to move the #1 pick. One ,we don't want to move too far down. Like McNair said, it's going to take a " godfather" deal to deal it.
Most likely,we are staying put.
