First off...before all of you Longhorn, Sooner, Aggie & (other) fans jump on me, I gotta first throw out the obvious comment. I KNOW that the competition is weaker in the C-USA. But keep in mind, so is the protection and the surrounding talent. So sure the D's that KOLB is throwing against isn't BIG 12, PAC-10, SEC, etc EVERY week...but he also has 1, 2 & 3 star talent at his disposal which kind of evens the field, IMO (unlike the schools who consistently win the Heisman getting mainly 4 & 5 star talent year after year.
With all that said...KEVIN KOLB has consistently put up EYE-POPPING numbers that are in the TOP-5 in practically all positive categories. Not to mention, the TEAM faltered in 3 consecutive games and lost by a COMBINED total of 8 points. 1 Loss being to THE U (Miami), in which by even Coach Briles words "U of H should have won". For those of you whom overlook the COOGS, check these out :
TOP 5 QB in NCAA IA in TOTAL YARDS
TOP 5 QB in NCAA IA in QB RATING with over 2000 yards passing
TIED for 1st with HEISMAN-LEADING CANDIDATE Troy Smith with TD/INT ratio (22 / 3)
And DON'T EVEN try to say "it's a PASS-HEAVY" system that gives misleading numbers. Check out HOUSTON COUGAR's RUSHING NUMBERS
Tied for 9th in RUSHING Touchdown
Tied for 23rd in %-Rush average
I won't even bother pulling the shoulda/coulda/woulda card by saying that if we had not faltered in the 3 last-minute losses that we'd be WELL into the Top 25 IN THE COUNTRY (currently sitting #30th...with votes in EVERY major poll for top 25 consideration). Our D let all 3 teams surpass our 4th Quarter lead...but you lose as a TEAM, not a group or an individual...so I'm not EXCUSING it.
Instead, I'll focus on the fact the the HEISMAN trophy is always said to recognize the ONE player that elevates the team and is the single-pure performer for it's respective program. And although COACH BRILES has done an EXCELLENT JOB with coaching up the talent that U of H is able to recruit. We would be SADLY mistaken to not recognize KEVIN KOLB as a legit candidate for the HEISMAN. Look at the team....and look at what KEVIN KOLB has achieved in 4 years as a starter for U OF H breaking practically (if not EVERY) passing record in a school with a VERY STORIED history of QB's likely only second to QB-U, MIAMI.
In case you didn't know, Kiper and a few others had KOLB on the Heisman watch prior to the 2004 season. He also showed up this summer for 2006, but was quickly surpassed by TROY-SMITH HYPE.
I say it's time U OF H fans/supporters need to rattle some cages and give KEVIN KOLB the just due of AT LEAST an invite & consideration for the HEISMAN.
(as a side note, it was announced that KOLB is being considered for the UNITAS golden arm award.) THAT is great. But the HEISMAN is what KOLB has rightfully earned for all of his work, talent and excellence!
They snubbed the COOGS in 1996 by ignoring us for THE BIG 12. And it's time we show them that they messed up!
Now lets make sure that we finish out this season STRONG and close out 2006 with a BOWL VICTORY and our 1st TOP 25 RANKING in over a decade!!!
